A federal judge in Alabama on Tuesday refused to block the Biden administration from enforcing new anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ students in four Republican-led states, breaking with six other judges who have said the rules are invalid. Singapore became the latest country to authorize insect products for human consumption, in what The Guardian described as a move that “paves the way for plates to become wrigglier, leggier and more sustainable” and as “a sign of things to come.” In an announcement on 8 July, the Singapore Food Agency said it had approved 16 insects for human consumption as food, making it the latest country to do so. Boeing named a longtime aerospace industry veteran on Wednesday as its next chief executive, who will take over a company that has been rocked by legal, regulatory and production problems. Robert “Kelly” Ortberg, a former CEO at Boeing supplier Rockwell Collins, will succeed David Calhoun as CEO and president effective Aug. 8, the company said. An off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s deputy was killed just before 1:30 a.m. in a shootout during a robbery at a gas station in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. The Chicago Sun-Times reported the incident occurred at a station “in the 500 block of East 67th Street.” The suspect approached the deputy, 31-year-0ld Rafael D. Wordlaw, and allegedly “tried to rob him.” Wordlaw and the suspect then exchanged gunfire and Wordlaw was shot in the chest. CHICAGO — Police are investigating two burglaries at high-end retailers along the Magnificent Mile overnight. In a bold crime, two men broke through a wall to burglarize Saks Fifth Avenue, 700 North Michigan, shortly before 3 a.m. The store’s remote security team saw a man walking around the fifth floor with armloads of merchandise and notified Chicago police.
