A weight loss intervention in people with type 2 diabetes was found to alter levels of cancer-related proteins, according to the findings of a new University of Bristol-led study. The study is the first to show that weight loss in people recently diagnosed with diabetes can change the levels of cancer-related chemicals circulating in the blood. According to Diabetes UK, over five million people in the UK live with diabetes and over 600 million people could be afflicted worldwide by 2045. Weight loss is now a key intervention, thanks to the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), which found that a...

Three and a half hours. Three and a half hours from Jenin to Tul Karm. In three and a half hours you can fly to Rome, or drive to Eilat. But in the occupied West Bank today you’re barely able to drive between two nearby cities. That’s the time it took us this week to travel from Jenin to Tul Karm, 35 kilometers. At the end of every Palestinian road on the West Bank there is a locked iron gate since the war in Gaza started. Waze instructs you to travel on these roads, but even this clever app doesn’t...

A new set of rules from the Biden administration seeks to rein in private health insurance companies’ use of prior authorization – a byzantine practice that requires people to seek insurance company permission before obtaining medication or having a procedure. The cost-containment strategy often delays care and forces patients, or their doctors, to navigate opaque and labyrinthine appeals. The administration’s newly finalized rules will require insurance companies who work in federal programs to speed up the approval process and make decisions within 72 hours for urgent requests. The regulations will also require companies to give a specific reason as to...

I've built power supplies using full wave rectifiers in the past, and a couple circuits with single diode half wave rectification for non-critical supplies, but in all cases the power requirements were low and the diodes I had on hand several times overrated for the current and voltage / power involved. This time though, I want to add a half power function to a 1500 watt 120 volt quartz heater. (Over-simplification - see below comments. But ~half of the 1500 watts is the design target.)*So... I know a diode in series with the quartz element and no power supply capacitor** will...

Caffeine restriction can help improve and reduce the severity of primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE), according to a study. Sadra Rezakhaniha and colleagues investigated the effect of caffeine restriction on the improvement and severity of PMNE in a randomized clinical trial involving 534 children aged 6 to 15 years. Caffeine consumption was <30 mg/day in the intervention group and 80 to 110 mg/day in the control group. Before caffeine restriction, the mean number of bed-wettings was 3.5 and 3.4 times/week in the intervention and control groups, respectively. About 80 New York City educators attended a Saturday morning virtual “curriculum share” seminar where they could obtain tips to “get around censorship” while teaching students about the “Israeli occupation” and “ongoing genocide in Gaza.” The groups encouraged participants to consider using fake names or blurring their video out of paranoid fear of “conservative Zionist individuals” who have targeted the event and might “dox attendees.” The event sparked outrage this week among critics who slammed it as antisemitic and divisive.

An increase in annual cardiorespiratory fitness by 3% or more is linked to a 35% lower risk of developing, although not dying from, prostate cancer, suggests research. They wanted to find out if improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness over time might influence these risks, drawing on a national occupational health profile assessment database. The database collected information on physical activity, lifestyle, perceived health, measurement of body mass and height, and the results of at least two cardiorespiratory fitness tests, measured by peddling on a stationary cycle, for 57,652 men out of a total of 181,673. Annual cardiorespiratory fitness measurements were expressed...
