An American businessman arrested in Communist China over a decade on apparently flimsy charges of drug trafficking will be put to death, Chinese government officials have announced. Mark Swidan, a Houston, Texas businessman, was arrested in November 2012 and sentenced to death in 2018 on charges he was in China to smuggle illegal drugs. John Kamm, chairman of the Dui Hua human rights foundation, tells Newsweek “the only ‘evidence’ against him is that Swidan once visited a factory where Chinese authorities allege the meth was manufactured, and that he had been in a room rented by another person where drugs...

Six-figure salaries have long been seen as a milestone for gauging success — the peak between the arduous grind of climbing the income ladder and breathing a deep sigh of relief. Those with a $100,000 salary earn more than double the median individual income for 2021, which might imply financial comfort on first glance. But when accounting for taxes and cost of living in America’s largest cities, those six-figures will feel much smaller.Ultimately, to have the purchasing power of $100,000, you will have to earn a substantially higher salary. With this in mind, SmartAsset set out to determine the salary...

Two high-profile Republicans who have probed the Biden family scandal are calling on Secretary of State Antony Blinken to resign or face impeachment over allegations he helped orchestrate an intelligence community letter during the 2020 election that falsely portrayed Hunter Biden's laptop contents as Russian disinformation. The rebukes of Blinken by Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) came after the release Thursday night of testimony from former CIA chief Michael Morell that Blinken had asked him to organize the now-infamous October 2020 letter to benefit the Biden campaign. Morell testified he agreed to do so because Blinken...

National Review has a story today about a battle that has been taking place at a Pennsylvania Middle School since last year. There’s a lot to this one so settle in. First, let’s set the table by talking about the student walkout and protests that took place last May. Consider some of the metrics. In 2019, the last year before the pandemic, median family income grew to nearly $73,000. It went up $4,600 in that year alone, a 6.4 percent increase over 2018—the largest annual increase going back to 1967. That amounted to 45 percent more growth in one year than the $3,200 increase that the Obama administration achieved in eight years. And contrary to what would become an election year talking point, the economic benefits were widespread. Every racial group experienced a record high median family income level: for white Americans it rose 5.7 percent; for black Americans,...

Throughout the pandemic conservatives (and even disaffected Democrats and independents) vacationed in and moved to the “Free State of Florida” in record numbers, attracted to relatively affordable housing and, well, freedom. Donald Trump spends the vast majority of his time there, escaping the New York winters, over-taxation, and politically-motivated, unscrupulous prosecutors. But according to an email he sent out Friday, the state is a hellhole.Atop the email was this statement from Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign spokesman.“The real DeSantis record is one of misery and despair. He has left a wake of destruction all across Florida and people are hurting because...

The passage of several gun control bills this session and in recent years could have enormous implications for certain firearm programs, such as shooting sports for both youth and adults, which may migrate toward friendlier states. HB 1240 bans various semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns, including youth target rifles shorter than 30 inches, labeling them “assault weapons.” SB 5078 prohibits the marketing of any firearms or accessories to minors, including gun holsters. Both bills have cleared the Legislature and have been sent to Gov. Jay Inslee for signing. Last year, the Legislature banned the sale or purchase of gun magazines...

Washington D.C., Apr 18, 2023 / 08:50 am Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly on Friday vetoed a “born-alive” bill protecting babies who survive botched abortions. This comes the week after Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed a similar bill mandating doctors’ care for abortion survivors. Both Kansas and Arizona have majority Republican legislatures but Democratic governors. In Kansas, where abortion is legal until the 22nd week of pregnancy, the governor called the born-alive bill “misleading” and “unnecessary.” “Federal law already protects newborns, and the procedure being described in this bill does not exist in Kansas in the era of modern medicine,” Kelly...
