X-ray research leads to surprise find - zinc affects the stability of cells in superbug and removing it kills them, writes Dr Miriam StoppardYou might remember zinc best as zinc oxide, the thick white cream slathered on babies with nappy rash and used for burns, cuts and scrapes. It’s a good barrier cream to protect the skin. But internally, zinc serves useful functions too – one of which is helping the production of healthy sperm. That’s because it promotes cell growth and multiplication, and supports the immune system. Now, exciting research from Warwick University is pointing the way to...

Which states have the loosest, most irresponsible gun laws? Southern states. Which are most dominated by the Republicans? Ditto. Which are most resistant to “broader public opinion” favoring greater restrictions on firearms. Same. Which states send the greatest number of lawmakers to the US Congress to block any chance of national gun-law reforms. You got it. Southern states with loose, irresponsible gun laws do not feel the effects of tight, responsible gun-control laws. But states with tight, responsible gun-control laws do feel the effects of loose, irresponsible gun laws in southern states. This is how they bend these United States...

Vice President Mike Pence took the stage to raucous booing at the National Rifle Association's (NRA) annual leadership summit in his home state. Pence called for mass shooters to be executed as soon as possible and blamed trans people and mental illness for the nation's chronic gun violence. 'I'm tired of the senseless violence and loss of life that could be prevented if our leaders would support law enforcement, protect our schools, institutionalize the obviously mentally ill, and enact legislation that...

E. coli strains capable of causing severe infections in people were also “highly” prevalent, according to the results. At the same time, scientists say that antibiotic resistance is reaching “dangerously high” levels around the world. Globally, drug-resistant infections kill an estimated 700,000 people a year. Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it,” the Book of Proverbs says. To certain right-wing Christians, the concept is simple: A child can be broken, or stamped into shape, much like any domesticated animal. Though all parents hope they’ll pass their values onto their children, for some that hope is more of a mandate. My own parents believe that Proverbs is the word of God, and they believed, too, that a righteous upbringing would produce an adult in their image. Who can blame them? The idea...
