Lincoln Power LLC, the owner of two Illinois power plants, filed for bankruptcy after its financial strain was exacerbated by nearly $39 million in penalties levied by the biggest US electric-grid operator. The Chapter 11 filing allows Lincoln, a unit of Carlyle Group-backed Cogentrix Energy Power Management LLC, to keep operating while working on a plan to repay creditors. PJM Interconnection LLC, which runs the grid that stretches from Washington to Chicago, fined Lincoln after its plants in Elgin and East Dundee, Illinois, failed to generate enough power during a severe winter storm in December. The grid operator in February...

If BlackRock Inc.’s largest ESG-labeled exchange-traded fund is a bellwether for the sustainable investing industry, it’s fair to say the US sector may be in for a bumpy ride. The assets of the iShares ESG Aware MSCI USA ETF (ticker ESGU) have dropped to $13.8 billion from a high of $25 billion as recently as a year ago. The slump occurred as shareholders pulled money from the ETF, but also as its investment performance trailed benchmark indexes, including the S&P 500, over the past two years. A recent $4 billion withdrawal from ESGU shows “the concentration risk” that exists in...

NEAR VICKSBURGH, Miss., Friday, March 20, 1863. Events of grave importance have occurred in this Department during the week past. I have already informed you of the expedition of Admiral PORTER toward Yazoo City, via the bayous which connect with Deer Creek and Sunflower River, undertaken a week ago, and of its probable success. At last accounts he was within a short distance of Deer Creek, which he had approached through a series of bayous now rendered navigable by the swollen condition of the streams. It was believed that the gunboats would reach Yazoo City two days ago. Lying there...

A group of news organisations has launched a bid to allow cameras into court when Donald Trump makes an unprecedented appearance on Tuesday. The group, which includes NBC News, The Associated Press and The New York Times, have also asked judge Juan Merchan to immediately unseal the indictment against the former US president. The group of media organisations requesting the indictment be unsealed argue that there is an "overwhelming public interest" in making the details available. A law firm representing the group said: "Because of the overwhelming public interest in the contents of the indictment, and because no valid purpose...

A reader named Bill Ponton has just produced an important new Report that explores the effects and costs of continuing increases in generation of electricity from wind. The Report has the title “The Cost of Increasing UK Wind Power Capacity: A Reality Check.” Ponton has sent his Report to me, and I’m writing about it now even though I don’t yet have a link to provide readers with access to the full Report. I will update this post with a link to the full Report as soon as I have it. Ponton’s Report follows and builds on prior work of...

Dozens of Bulgarian schools were closed for a second day on March 28 following bomb threats with investigators saying they were looking into potential Russia-linked terror actions meant to disrupt the upcoming snap parliamentary elections scheduled for April 2. Most of the schools targeted in the threats -- first made by e-mail and phone on March 27 -- were located in the capital, Sofia, and the Black Sea port cities of Varna and Burgas. The threats prompted the disruption of classes and the evacuation of students.

The assault on traditional Christians by the pope, of all leaders, and lately by the FBI, of all agencies, calls for an honest explanation. Why is the pope turning his back on his own Church? Why is the FBI violating the guaranteed right of Americans to religious freedom? Since I witnessed Catholic worship long before the church was changed in the 1960s, I can offer some insight into the what and the why of this issue, from eye-witness information recorded in my autobiography. (This is from the perspective of a resident of New York City.) Before proceeding, I need to...

Madrid (AFP) – Spain's colourful Holy Week celebrations begin on Sunday, featuring centuries-old processions of the faithful carrying flower-covered floats topped with statues of Christ or the Virgin Mary that draw huge crowds. Organised by various religious brotherhoods, or "confradias", the parades are held across the country in the week leading up to Easter Sunday, which this year in the Christian Church falls on April 9. Depicting scenes from the story of the Passion of Christ, the floats are carried on the shoulders of members of the brotherhoods called "costaleros", often accompanied by solemn music from a brass band. Other...

The two big stories this week illustrate the corruption of the legal system and of the Democrat party, which controls key portions of it. As well, they illustrate the media’s continuing effort to deny us the truth we see with our own eyes. The Indictment of President Trump New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Jr. has indicted former President Trump. Arraignment is scheduled on Tuesday. Sometime before then we are likely to see the charges against him, which reportedly -- as is the normal order of weak cases -- run to over 20 counts. Charging so many counts is a...

Dozens of Donald Trump supporters rallied around the former president during an event held in New York by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis is strongly expected to confirm he is running against Trump in the GOP primary for the party's 2024 presidential nomination. He spoke at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, Staten Island on Saturday as part of his national tour promoting his new book, The Courage to be Free: Florida's Blueprint for America's Revival. Outside the venue, a group of Trump supporters were picketing the event and criticized the governor for appearing in the former president's...

"Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . those who mourn . . .the gentle . . . those who hunger and thirst for righteousness . . . the merciful . . . the pure in heart . . . the peacemakers . . . [and] those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness" (Matt. 5:3-10). By the world’s standards, Christ’s definition of happiness is shocking and contradictory! A quiz in a popular magazine characterized happy people as those who enjoy other people but aren't self-sacrificing, who refuse to participate in negative feelings or emotions, and who...

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13 NKJV). We see in Acts 4 that as Peter and John stood waiting for judgment to be pronounced, the man who had just been healed stood with them. There, in the flesh, was living proof that Peter and John had been with Jesus. Now, as the synagogue rulers looked on “and seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it” (Acts...

Comedian and HBO host Bill Maher said former President Trump’s eventual mugshot photo could prompt a certain level of excitement at liberal cable news network MSNBC. “He will be arrested. He will be fingerprinted. And everybody at MSNBC is asking the same question: Is it wrong to j–k off to a mug shot?” Maher said, leading to raucous laughter from his “Real Time” audience on Friday. “I find it so funny that the guy, the DA in New York who brought this case, Alvin Bragg. I love this, that the most boastful man ever in history is indicted by a...

Hunter Biden’s stripper ex Lunden Roberts has demanded an Arkansas judge unseal court records - telling the judge the first son should not be allowed to keep information under wraps, RadarOnline.com has learned. According to court documents obtained by RadarOnline.com, Lunden said Hunter filed a December 2022 motion under seal, without proper justification. The court previously ordered for all of Hunter’s filings that contained “financial information” to be sealed. Lunden said Hunter’s filing did not contain financial information but was still sealed. She said, “one of the basic principles of a democracy is that the people have a right to...
