First, my daughter came out as transgender; then my bisexual wife came out as nonbinary. As the only nonqueer person in the family, I often feel left out by their shared experience. But my queer family has taught me a lot about myself and how masculinity can be less restrictive. My 19-year-old daughter last month invited her mother to see the queer comedian Chris Fleming. My wife was thrilled. Our daughter still lives with us, but she often communicates in brief grunts as she scurries down to her basement lair, emerging only to let in friends and forage for chicken...

The Archdiocese of Portland has instructed Catholic schools in the area to rebuff what it calls “gender identity theory.” “This means that names, pronouns, facilities use, attire, and sports participation should depend upon biological sex identity, rather than self-perceived gender identity,” reads a 17-page document called “A Catholic Response to Gender Identity Theory” from Archbishop Alexander K. Sample late last month. The National Catholic Reporter wrote Feb. 2 that the Portland archdiocese is just the latest branch of the Catholic Church to enact similar policies, but it’s likely to face blowback from its schools, including those in Portland, given the...

After a significant drop in student enrollment, officials from Washington's largest school district are floating the idea of shuttering some schools and cutting staff, the Seattle Times reported. School officials from Seattle Public Schools discussed the potential need to "consolidate into a system of well-resourced schools" because of significant budget shortfalls related to decreased student enrollment. The district's senior staff discussed how consolidating the district's 106 schools may provide students with improved access to specialized programs, social workers, specialists, counselors, and nurses. The district's interim deputy superintendent, Fred Podesta, argued that "consolidating into larger schools that have the resources they...

On Monday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced legislation that would protect Floridians from banks from using Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) social credit scores in how they lend. DeSantis said ESG has become a "mechanism to inject political ideology into investment decisions, corporate governance, and really just the everyday economy," Florida's Voice reports.

Researchers found that a good fat derivative may be able to relieve symptoms in patients suffering from chronic inflammatory diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a chronic, autoimmune disease of the brain and spinal cord during which the immune system attacks the cells and tissues that protect nerve fibers. There is no cure for MS. The researchers specifically looked at docosahexaenoyl ethanolamide (DHEA), a derivative of the lipids found in cold-water fish and fish oil supplements, and its impact on the immune system. Interestingly, DHEA has been shown to be anti-inflammatory and has similar properties to cannabis in...

"When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. "But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. "He also that received seed among the thorns is he that...

A romance novelist who once trademarked the word “cocky” was arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase through a Wyoming national park — but has been missing ever since her release from jail. Faleena Hopkins, 52, was arrested Jan. 27 after leading cops on a 24-mile pursuit through Grand Teton National Park that only ended when officers used spike strips to deflate her tires. While Hopkins is best known for her raunchy “Cocker brother” romance series that spans 22 titles, she also made national headlines in 2018 when she registered for and received a trademark on the word “cocky.”...

COVID-19 has led to increased focus on a disease with similar hallmarks and symptoms—myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Two studies are taking a closer look at ME/CFS as it relates to the microbiome and the metabolites that microbial species produce. Both studies found that ME/CFS is associated with reduced levels in the gastrointestinal microbiome of microbes known to produce the fatty acid butyrate. ME/CFS is a chronic, complex, and systemic disease associated with neurological, immunological, autonomic, and energy metabolism dysfunctions. It is believed in most cases to be triggered by exposure to viruses or other infectious agents. Oh's analysis showed...

Back in 2019, Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar issued an apology to the Jewish community. “Anti-Semitism is real and I am grateful for Jewish allies and colleagues who are educating me on the painful history of antisemitic tropes,” she said. “My intention is never to offend my constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole. We have to always be willing to step back and think through criticism, just as I expect people to hear me when others attack me for my identity. This is why I unequivocally apologize.” The congresswoman released the statement after she posted a tweet that suggested...

I am a budding options/futures trader with my own sole proprietor investment business. Heading into 2022, I took on a large cash infusion of $500,000 from friends and family under the guise of a promise I made to issue a 10% return on their money. This promise was made via a signed promissory note, and the return was less than the annual return I had been experiencing years before. And then 2022 happened. It was an extremely bad year for the markets, and the worst I’d seen since I had been actively trading. Needless to say, I was not able...

TP53 mutant head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients exhibit poor clinical outcomes with 50–60% recurrence rates in advanced stage patients. In a recent phase II clinical trial, adjuvant therapy with everolimus (mTOR inhibitor) significantly increased 2-year progression-free survival in p53 mutated patients. TP53-driven mTOR activation in solid malignancies causes upregulation of HIF-1α and its target, downstream effector VEGF, by activating STAT3 cell signaling pathway. In this recent study, Md Maksudul Alam investigated the effects of everolimus on the STAT3/HIF-1α/VEGF pathway in TP53 mutant cell lines and xenograft models. "The role of mTOR inhibitors (mTORi) as potent growth inhibitory...
