State Sen. Jerry Petrowski, a Republican from Marathon, said Thursday he will not seek re-election this fall to represent Wisconsin Senate District 29. His departure represents a trend toward fewer political moderates in the state Legislature. "I would say he was a reasonable person, a moderate and reasonable person," said Luther Olsen, a Republican who served in the state Senate from 2005 until leaving office in January 2021. Wisconsin residents are "losing a lot, a good guy. Jerry was a hard worker who took on a lot of causes and wrote lots of bills."

When Guy Reffitt became the first person to stand trial for storming the US Capitol, he had to face not only a judge and jury, but his own son on the witness stand. Those who know Reffitt say he is a big talker. So much so that his defence lawyer used it as his main argument for dismissing the case against Reffitt, who stood trial for bringing a handgun to the US Capitol during the 6 January riot. But it was the volume of evidence of this bragging - detailed in texts, videos and audio - that convinced jurors of...

The European Parliament has, by a large majority, adopted a resolution calling on the European Commission to begin action to withhold funds from member states that fail to respect the rule of law. The document names Hungary and Poland as particular violators. The resolution was condemned by Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, which unsuccessfully proposed an amendment calling for the rule-of-law mechanism not to be applied due to the war in Ukraine and the pandemic. It also called on the EU to immediately release Covid recovery funds that have been blocked over rule-of-law concerns.

The Islamic State group Thursday confirmed the death of its leader Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi, more than a month after his demise, and named Abu Hasan al-Hashemi al-Qurashi as his successor. Little is known about the new leader, who will serve as the jihadist group's third chief since its inception. IS personnel have "pledged allegiance" to "Abu Hasan al-Hashemi al-Qurashi as an emir over believers and the caliph of Muslims," the group's spokesperson said in an audio recording released on its social media channels. The recording confirmed the death of the former IS chief along with the group's ex-spokesman. "Abu Ibrahim...

Prince William was accused of "horrific comments" by Martin Luther King's daughter in the aftermath of a Ukrainian community event where he was partially misquoted. Bernice King linked the Duke of Cambridge's remarks to colonialism after William and Kate Middleton visited the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in London to support the relief effort on March 9. Footage from the event showed Prince William said: "Everyone is horrified by what they are seeing. The news every day, it's almost unfathomable to actually witness it, to see it. For our generation, it's very alien to see this in Europe. We're all right behind...

Arthur Roche: prefect under pressure The English archbishop at the centre of the storm over the suppression of the old rite says that the Church must return to liturgical unityNothing is able to stir up a disagreement in the Church like the liturgy. The recent decision by Pope Francis to re-impose restrictions on the use of the pre-Second Vatican Council liturgy, the “Tridentine Mass”, has sparked a storm of criticism from traditionalists. One commentator recently accused the Pope of espousing “liberal illiberalism”, while even some progressive voices have questioned whether Francis’ tough measures run counter to the dialogue and...

Seven months before a man shot and killed his three daughters and a family friend in a Sacramento church last week, a man in Kern County shot and killed his wife, two sons and a sheriff’s deputy responding to violence at their home. In July 2020, a Madera County man shot and killed his wife as she was putting their three children in her minivan. And in November 2019, a San Diego man shot and killed his wife and four sons, ranging in age from 3 to 11. The only thing more horrific than any one of these murders is...

The Russian Defense Ministry on Thursday announced that US-funded biological labs in Ukraine were conducting experiments with bat coronavirus samples. There is no smoke without fire. Some netizens commented that the Americans seem to have a special preference for making vampire-themed movies, and the prototype of the vampire comes from bat. The Americans' experiments with bat coronavirus have cultural origins. Discussions about US bio labs in Ukraine are turning heated. Earlier, the Kremlin revealed evidence that the US was involved in biological weapons research in Ukrainian labs. It also said that Ukraine had destroyed samples of various pathogens. On Tuesday,...

To be a member of God’s true church, you must be known by the name of Jehovah Shammah: “The Lord is there” (see Ezekiel 48:35). Others must be able to say about you, “It’s clear to me the Lord is with this person. Every time I see them, I sense the presence of Jesus. Their life truly reflects the glory of God.” If we’re honest, we must admit we don’t sense the Lord’s sweet presence in each other very often. Why? Christians spend their time involved in good religious activities like prayer groups, Bible studies, outreach ministries; and that’s all...

“‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God’” (Matthew 5:9). One of the most obvious facts of world history is that peace does not characterize man’s earthly existence. Yet two thousand years ago Jesus instructed God’s people to be peacemakers. He gave us a special mission to help restore the peace lost at the Fall. The peace of which Christ speaks is unlike anything the world knows or strives for. His peace is not concerned with resolving conflict between governments and nations, with righting the wrongs of human oppression. His peace is the inner, personal peace...

On Thursday’s broadcast of CNBC’s “Closing Bell,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that “We’re likely to see another year in which 12-month inflation numbers remain very uncomfortably high.” But cautioned there is a large amount of uncertainty due to the conflict in Ukraine and expressed confidence in the Federal Reserve “to make a meaningful difference going forward.” Co-host Sara Eisen asked, “Already had been happening and is happening in the U.S., when it comes to rising prices from everything from wages to rents to food prices, I think your expectation previously is that inflation would come down in the second...
