The Islamic State group Thursday confirmed the death of its leader Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi, more than a month after his demise, and named Abu Hasan al-Hashemi al-Qurashi as his successor.
Little is known about the new leader, who will serve as the jihadist group's third chief since its inception. IS personnel have "pledged allegiance" to "Abu Hasan al-Hashemi al-Qurashi as an emir over believers and the caliph of Muslims," the group's spokesperson said in an audio recording released on its social media channels. The recording confirmed the death of the former IS chief along with the group's ex-spokesman. "Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi and the official Islamic State group spokesman... Abu Hamza al-Qurashi... were killed in recent days," said the new spokesperson, identified as Abu-Omar al-Muhajjir. According to the White House and US defence officials, Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi died when he detonated a bomb to avoid capture during a US raid that saw commandos swoop in by helicopter to an area in northwest Syria controlled by rival jihadists.

Jingle bombs... lol
So, “al-Hashemi al-Qurashi” are his kids? What does the “al-” mean?
Doesn’t look like the brightest bulb in the box...
Good.
Al-Hashemi means that he is a Hashemite - an Arab descendant of the family/clan of the Prophet Muhammed.
Al-Qurashi means that he is a member of the Quraysh Tribe - the larger tribe that Muhammed belonged to. The Hashemites were a clan within that Tribe, during Muhammed’s time.
“What does the “al-” mean?”
“The”
al Queda and ISIS members use a Nom de Guerre, rather than their actual names. Usually it will end with their Country of origin, like al Amriki (the American), or al Masri (the Egyptian).
In this case of the new ISIS Emir (or Caliph), they instead tout the kind of pedigree that has traditionally supported claims to leadership among Arab muslims (like the Hashemite Family that rules Jordan today).
“What’s with the WC Fields nose.”
I guess it takes some serious brown-nosing to rise up in that organization.
He is probably a bit bow-legged as well.
Haven’t laughed so hard in ages.
Al as in THE
Thanks for that insight.
Thanks.
