In the final decade of the nineteenth century, well-to-do New Yorkers had begun to arrange new and larger kinds of Christmas visitations to the poor and these gala events reeked - strongly - of exploitation. During the 1890s some New Yorkers began to treat charity, almost literally, as a kind of spectator sport, performed on a large scale in arenalike spaces before a paying audience. On Christmas Day, 1890, a midday dinner was served to 1,800 poor boys (many of them newsboys) at Lyric Hall, a theatre at the corner of Sixth Avenue and 42nd Street. A newspaper account made...

The IEA is calling on China and India to put their climate pledges into action. Chris Christie is trying to regain political respectability with a road map for a post-Trump Republican Party amid countless media appearances. The former New Jersey governor, once a prime GOP presidential hopeful, wrote the book “Republican Rescue” to save the party from its craziness, the lie about the stolen presidential election, the Jan. 6 mob assault on the Capitol and right-wing nuts such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-Ga.).

It’s hard to think of anything more symbolic of America’s gilded and decadent ruling class than elected officials owning pieces of the very economy they’re officially charged with managing. All told, it’s difficult to imagine something more darkly symbolic of a decadent ruling class than a multimillionaire member of Congress mounting a transparently self-interested defense of political insider trading. Nonetheless, that’s exactly what House Speaker Nancy Pelosi did this week when asked about a proposed ban on members and their spouses holding and trading stocks while in office. “This is a free market, and people — we are a free...

On Sunday, Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appeared on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” with host Maria Bartiromo to discuss issues related to COVID-19. During the segment, Bartiromo spoke with DeSantis about the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals dissolving the stay on the Biden administration’s vaccine and test mandate for private employers. “…an appeals court on Friday allowed President Biden’s vaccine mandate for private employers to take effect as New York and California are reimposing these mask mandates,” Bartiromo said. “It looks like this is going to the Supreme Court.” DeSantis responded, saying that he thought the 6th Circuit made...

[Catholic Caucus] Brezhnev Papacy Gregory Dippipo at New Liturgical Movement nails this latest move in the war against traditional Catholicism by Pope Peron:Secondly, with permission, I share a reflection written by an Italian friend, followed by an elaboration of my own.“The pontificate of John Paul II produced a generation of Wojtylian priests, that of Benedict XVI a generation of Ratzingerian priests. The current pontificate has inspired no such school or movement. Gentlemen of a certain age, who had already taken hold of positions of power, have consolidated their power, but there is no ‘Bergoglio generation.’ This pontificate, with all its...

DEAR AMERICAN PEOPLE, DEAR FRIENDS, for two years now, a global coup has been carried out all over the world, planned for some time by an elite group of conspirators enslaved to the interests of international high finance. This coup was made possible by an emergency pandemic that is based on the premise of a virus that has a mortality rate almost analogous to that of any other seasonal flu virus, on the delegitimization and prohibition of effective treatments, and on the distribution of an experimental gene serum which is obviously ineffective, and which also clearly carries with it the...

[Catholic Caucus] Additional Notes from @FatherZ on the Dubious Dubia concerning “Traditionis custodes”My first reactions are HERE.Note One. The timing of these “responsa“… Merry Christmas everyone! It’s as if they wanted to hurt people even more by making these changes close to such an important day, bound up with Midnight Masses and so forth. Ed Pentin pointed out that the day that Francis signed off on them, 18 November, was the Feast of the Dedication of the Basilicas of Sts. Peter and Paul, and on that very day there was a massive power outage that reduced St. Peter’s to darkness.Note...

“God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name” (Philippians 2:9). God exalted Christ by giving Him a new name. In today’s verse a question that arises is, What is the name that is above every name? To be consistent with Scripture, it has to be a name that goes beyond merely distinguishing one person from another. It has to be a name that describes Christ’s nature—revealing something of His inner being. Only such a name would cause Him to be clearly ranked above all others. Paul wasn’t referring to a comparative name, but...
