Sports are back, certainly as a TV product. The NFL is up in the ratings over last season. The NBA, buoyed by a resurgent Warriors, improved Eastern Conference and avoidance of Thursday Night Football, is up over last season as well. So all is well, right? Let’s just say there’s an issue, one that franchises are attempting to obscure. I’m looking at it through the prism of the NBA, because that’s the sport I’m obviously most familiar with, but this is a broader problem that could explode into a larger story. Jacob Feldman of Sportico gives us a good look...

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who led a Democratic congressional delegation at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow Tuesday, said women around the world are more exposed to climate change’s negative impact. “It’s a threat multiplier that amplifies and accelerates existing inequities,” she said during “gender day” at the summit, according to the New York Times. “Eighty percent of people displaced by climate change globally are women.” The United Nations, which organized the summit, said women are more vulnerable to climate change due to social, economic and cultural factors. “Seventy percent of the 1.3 billion people living in conditions of poverty...

Seattle’s downtown is now considered so dangerous that King County employees will be escorted by security guards to buses, trains and ferries as part of a new program. Private sector workers won't have such option. The new initiative, dubbed the Walking Bus pilot program, was announced internally to King County employees Wednesday — the same day the city council, seemingly going against the wishes of Seattle voters’ rejection of the defund police movement, proposed a nearly $11 million cut from the force. According to the King County website, the Walking Bus pilot program will take effect on Nov. 15. Starting...

The October Consumer Price Index number was a stunning .9%. That means prices have increased 6.2% in the last twelve months. The behavior of the Federal Reserve (Fed), Congress and the Biden Administration is shockingly irresponsible. Action must be taken immediately. Failure to do so could lead to runaway inflation. Four decades ago, the Fed realized that the growth in the money supply has a direct effect on the inflation rate. Since then, Fed policy of controlling the money supply growth has generally kept inflation under 3%. Now the Fed has stopped that policy. Instead they say that based on...

Social media users wondered if the San Francisco Chronicle had published satire when the outlet asked if residents should start to "tolerate" burglaries as part of their every day life amid a recent crime surge. San Francisco has seen an increase in shootings, assaults, shoplifting, car break-ins and more in recent months. The city’s Central District, by way of example, experienced a 753% increase in car break-ins from May 2020 to May 2021. More than 150 families were so fearful they even hired private security to protect their property. The rate of burglaries has been particularly concerning. As of Oct....

With the vaccine now being available for kids age 5 to 11, and with COVID cases ticking upward as we approach the holidays, there is renewed effort to get more people vaccinated. "Nationwide more than 20% of all adults and children over the age of 12 have not yet received even one dose of vaccine," said Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Northwest suburbs. Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Dr. Ngozi Ezike testified Wednesday before a congressional...

On Saturday, major LGBT events on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts served to highlight the substantial rise of the normalization of homosexuality and transgenderism in institutions that were once regarded as bastions of conservatism. Donald Trump hosted a huge black tie gala for Log Cabin (LGBT) Republicans at his Florida Mar-a-Lago Atlantic resort home where former First Lady Melania Trump was honored with the organization’s “Spirit of Lincoln” Award.

The report cited potentially suspicious troop movements inside Russia as being one of the reasons for U.S. concern.

Abstract SARS-CoV in 2003, SARS-CoV-2 in 2019, and SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOC) can cause deadly infections, underlining the importance of developing broadly effective countermeasures against Group 2B Sarbecoviruses, which could be key in the rapid prevention and mitigation of future zoonotic events. Here, we demonstrate the neutralization of SARS-CoV, bat CoVs WIV-1 and RsSHC014, and SARS-CoV-2 variants D614G, B.1.1.7, B.1.429, B1.351 by a receptor-binding domain (RBD)-specific antibody DH1047. Prophylactic and therapeutic treatment with DH1047 demonstrated protection against SARS-CoV, WIV-1, RsSHC014, and SARS-CoV-2 B1.351infection in mice. Binding and structural analysis showed high affinity binding of DH1047 to an epitope that...

Children learn social cues from observing body language of the people around them, including facial expressions. Masks preclude all social development based on facial expressions. A critical period is between the ages of 3 and 11, when children make great strides in reading emotions from facial expressions. There is some evidence that determining emotions from facial expressions correlates with social skills. How many children are being stunted in this area by being deprived of this vital period in their development?

Reps. Liz Cheney (Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (Ill.), are expressing support for censuring their fellow Republican Rep. Paul Gosar (Ariz.) for posting a photoshopped anime video this week depicting himself killing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). Cheney and Kinzinger have frequently criticized their own party over its continued ties to former President Trump, but it is nevertheless extraordinarily rare for lawmakers to back censure efforts against members of their own party. A group of House Democrats, led by Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), formally introduced a resolution on Friday to censure Gosar over the video, which the Arizona Republican defended as a...
