The euphoria around Rivian kicked into overdrive Wednesday as it debuted as a publicly traded company, with an opening share price of $106.75. If that sticks, it would give Rivian an implied valuation of $90 billion. The opening trade was nearly 37% higher than its listed IPO price of $78. That absolute eye-popping number makes Rivian one of the largest IPOs in U.S. history and puts its market cap above GM as well as one of its backers, Ford (GM’s market cap is $86.31 billion; Ford’s is $78.2 billion). That share price continued to rise after it began trading around 1...

ROME — Humanity needs a global reset because the unjust, pre-pandemic world is not worth going back to, Pope Francis asserted Monday. In a message to the Paris Forum on Peace, the pope painted a dire picture of a pre-coronavirus world dominated by corruption, war, and capitalistic oppression. The reality we knew before the pandemic was that wealth and economic growth were reserved for a minority while millions of people were unable to meet the most basic needs and lead a dignified life,” Francis said, “a world in which our Earth was plundered by a myopic exploitation of resources, by...

Skift Take Alternative fuel sources are urgently needed, yes. But the cruise lines’ woes go well beyond emissions and remain unaddressed, even if CLIA now recognizes that really big ships aren't suitable for certain destinations. On the heels of global tourism’s leading organizations announcing a collective climate commitment at COP26, the cruise sector said that it also continues to make progress in environmental efforts. The Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) released its annual environmental report this week, and said that its...

Joy Behar told her co-hosts Thursday on ABC’s “The View” that the testimony of Kyle Rittenhouse during his murder trial was some of the “worst acting” she has ever seen. During his testimony, Rittenhouse said, “I didn’t do anything wrong. I was defending myself.” Behar said, “Oh, baloney.” She added, “I mean, from what I’m gleaning from this case, the guy goes across state lines with an AR-15, with his mother and some other idiot in the car to defend himself against what? They’re having a protest in another state, and he takes it upon himself to go there. Then...

The UK’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for front-line health and social care staff in England may force more than 120,000 people to leave the sector, according to government estimates. The bulk of Thomas Binger's questioning of Rittenhouse on Wednesday assumed that unless a person has physically touched you, there is no reason to protect yourself with force that may prove deadly. If you follow the prosecution’s case against Kyle Rittenhouse, the only logical end is the assertion that self-defense is almost never an option and visiting the scene of a riot is only okay if you are there to burn property. There are other facets to lead prosecutor Thomas Binger’s arguments — that Rittenhouse, 18, was in illegal possession of a gun, that he showed up in Kenosha, Wis., that...
