San Ysidro (United States) (AFP) – Maria fled the violent drug gangs of Michoacan with just three changes of clothes, and traveled 1,500 miles (2,500 kilometers) to the edge of Mexico where she now waits to claim political asylum in the United States.
The 38-year-old is part of a record wave of Central and Southern Americans trying to escape violence and poverty at home and make a new life in the world's richest country over the last year, even as its borders have been shut because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Now they have opened again, Maria sees a chink of light.
"Now I have hope," she told AFP in a makeshift camp in Tijuana, where hundreds have gathered waiting to travel a few miles north across the frontier.

Immigrants are coming late to the party.
This isn’t the country it used to be and our best days are far behind us.
What’s left is but a shadow of the great country we once were.

Many just see an easy mark.
There are plenty of jobs in Mexico. They just don’t have the same generous cradle-to-grave welfare benefits offered in the USA.
That is the main difference. These “immigrants” are basically coming here to die when the USA collapses.

In the meantime, let’s reclaim our once-great America, by decertifying the stolen 2020 election, and rebuilding under President Trump!!!! Then the USA will once again be a good place for LEGAL immigrants to come to!!!!
Um, it doesn’t take 1500 miles to get out of harm’s way in Oaxaca.

Lots of maquiladora jobs there. Seven “universities”.
Drug gangs too, but she just needs to stay away from them.
What she really wants is freebies from Los Gringos.
And special privileges for her and her bambinos because they are “hispanic”.
Not because she was ever a slave. Or discriminated against by the Americans. She wasnt here, how could that happen?
She just wants to take what she and her countrymen couldt make. By violence: thats what it is when you cross the border illegally.
She may have ‘hope’....
But what skills does she have???
Legally, she CAN NOT work in the USA.
