Explanation: Nature photographers and other fans of planet Earth always look forward to the blue hour. That's the transition in twilight, just before sunrise or after sunset, when the Sun is below the horizon but land and sky are still suffused with a beautiful blue light. After sunset on August 21, this blue hour snapshot captured the nearly full Moon as it rose opposite the Sun, above the rugged Italian Alps from Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. Sharing bluish hues with the sky, the rocky pyramid of Monte Antelao, also known as the King of the Dolomites, is the region's prominent alpine...

"Many years ago, I tossed most of my old journals into the recycle bin except for two that a good friend convinced me to keep; one was entries that I was painfully required to write for 15 minutes daily during a year of living and working with Americorps in the Six Rivers National Forest of Northern California, and academic notes & drawings from a related Fisheries class. In that year my crew and I hiked hundreds of miles with heavy tools through mystical redwood forests to cut trail for scientists to do research and campers to enjoy the outdoors, and...

AbstractOne cannot spend >5 min on social media at the moment without finding a link to some conspiracy theory or other regarding the origin of SARS-CoV2, the coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. From the virus being deliberately released as a bioweapon to pharmaceutical companies blocking the trials of natural remedies to boost their dangerous drugs and vaccines, the Internet is rife with far-fetched rumors. And predictably, now that the first immunization trials have started, the antivaccine lobby has latched on to most of them. In the last week, the trailer for a new “bombshell documentary” Plandemic has been doing...

Rice University moved to online classes last week after a surprisingly high amount of students tested for COVID-19, which the university now says were false positives. Approximately 2% of the 4,500 administered tests produced a positive result. Consequently, Rice delayed the start of classes by two days to yesterday while maintaining online instruction through September 3. Unlike public schools in Texas, which are barred from mandating the COVID vaccine or masks, Rice stated that it expects students to get vaccinated before returning to campus. After analyzing the results, the university began to suspect that there was something amiss. Although Coronavirus...

The day 12 American service members and an unknown number of Afghans were killed by suicide bombings in Kabul, Afghanistan, President Joe Biden was 25 minutes late to address the nation in a roaming speech marked with labored breathing and a few choked-up moments. Biden said he's "outraged as well as heartbroken" after "ISIS-K took the lives of service members standing guard at the airport" in Kabul Thursday. The President, though, had extended the deadline negotiated by Trump. And his failure to successfully or safely bring the United States out of Afghanistan is squarely the fault of President Biden. "These...

While August is typically the month where legislators look forward to escaping the DC heat and heading home on their “August Recess,” given the cascade of disasters occurring under Democrat leadership, this year’s recess may be no vacation for Congressional Democrats. Indeed, Democrats in Congress are almost certainly dreading returning to their districts to face their enraged constituents. Much like the angry reactions seen at Democrat townhalls across the nation in 2009 following the passage of Obamacare, this summer’s recess is likely to bring them an earful. Here are six big questions Democrats are praying they can squirm out of...

President Joe Biden promised on Thursday to hunt down and destroy the terrorists who killed 11 U.S. Marines and a navy medic, along with dozens of Afghans, in a double suicide attack on Kabul airport. He paid tribute to the 'selfless heroes' who died helping vulnerable people to safety, but delivered a stern warning to the people responsible. 'For those who carried out this attack, as well as anyone who wishes America harm, know this: We will not forgive, we will not forget,' he said in an address at the White House, after a day consulting with his national security...

Researchers have reversed lung fibrosis in a mouse model of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, or IPF. Mice were given bleomycin for 12 days to establish lung fibrosis, and then treated daily until 21 days with ABT-199, whose medical form is known as Venetoclax. Control bleomycin mice had lung fibrosis with widespread collagen deposition. The bleomycin mice that received ABT-199 had normal lung architecture at 21 days and no collagen deposition. These results suggest a novel therapeutic target to reverse fibrotic remodeling in the lungs, says study leader A. Brent Carter, M.D. Pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic disease showing aberrant remodeling of...

Morning Joe: Afghanistan Headlines Will ‘Fade,’ Voters Will ‘Credit’ Biden Kyle Drennen August 26th, 2021 On Wednesday, MSNBC’s Morning Joe was hoping that the Afghanistan catastrophe would “fade from the headlines” just in time for President Biden and the Democratic Party to make a political comeback before the 2022 midterm elections. The liberal wish-casting even went so far as to suggest “more and more people are going to agree with what he did” and eventually give him “credit” for the disastrous foreign policy failure. “Mika, you know, as you look at those numbers and you look at the numbers right...
