Videodrome is a 1983 Canadian science fiction body horror film written and directed by David Cronenberg and starring James Woods, Sonja Smits, and Debbie Harry. Set in Toronto during the early 1980s, it follows the CEO of a small UHF television station who stumbles upon a broadcast signal featuring violence and torture. The layers of deception and mind-control conspiracy unfold as he uncovers the signal's source, and loses touch with reality in a series of increasingly bizarre hallucinations. Distributed by Universal Pictures, Videodrome was the first film by Cronenberg to gain backing from any major Hollywood studio.James Woods and Deborah...

Dawson Day said he doesn’t visit downtown Indianapolis much because of its reputation for crime and a perceived lack of safety. “I feel like there’s always something going on around there. It’s just like constant crime all the time and I think its best if people stay away from there, honestly,” he said. George Stergiopoulos has his hands full opening a new location at Bottleworks just off Massachusetts Avenue, but he came in early Sunday morning to scrap food and melted cheese and debris off the windows of his restaurant near Monument Circle. “Just vandalism, some of the locals just...

BARRINGTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A former monastery left vacant when the last nuns moved out has gone on the market for over $3 million, and now Barrington officials are seeking to buy the property. With their numbers dwindling, the final six Roman Catholic sisters of the Discalced Carmelite order last year decided to vacate the location on Watson Avenue where they had lived a cloistered life of prayer since 1957. “It’s really the only option available to us at this time,” one of the six, Sister Sue Lamb, told the Rhode Island Catholic in October. “We’ve lost about 14 sisters...

While interest in the topic of diversity has steadily grown within Tolkien research, it is now receiving more critical attention than ever before. Spurred by recent interpretations of Tolkien’s creations and the cast list of the upcoming Amazon show The Lord of the Rings, it is crucial we discuss the theme of diversity in relation to Tolkien. How do adaptations of Tolkien’s works (from film and art to music) open a discourse on diversity within Tolkien’s works and his place within modern society? Beyond his secondary-world, diversity further encompasses Tolkien’s readership and how his texts exist within the primary world....

PITTSBURGH — A group representing some Pittsburgh priests and lay people issued its support for same-sex unions and LGBTQ people in response to the Vatican’s declaration this spring that the Catholic Church does not have the authority to bless same-sex unions. In a statement released Monday, the Association of Pittsburgh Priests argued that the Vatican’s March report, which claims same-sex unions are sinful, was “pastorally unacceptable” and “insensitive to the loving, committed relationships of many members of the body of Christ.” “We stand with LGBTQ people,” reads the statement, published by the diocesan-wide organization that claims roughly 300 ordained and...

The country's recent abortion law is likely unconstitutional and cannot be applied until a ruling by the Supreme Court, a federal judge declared. MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina, June 10, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – A judge ruled that application of a recent law legalizing elective abortion in Argentina must be suspended throughout the country. Judge Alfredo López of Mar del Plata ordered the suspension earlier this week, ACI Prensa reported, as the law is likely unconstitutional and violates international agreements that Argentina joined in defense of life, he said. The Argentinian government had enacted a bill in December allowing abortion beyond the...

I cant be the only one to be blindsided by what seems to be such an unfair practice in the auto-leasing industry. I was planning to buy out the lease on a car when it came due in 2 months. Unfortunately the car was totaled (no injuries). The car is valued at $20K (round figures here). I owe $14K (been paying on it 3 years). Heres the kicker...the leasing company says that they are due $20K from the insurance company not the $14K that is owed...which is completely backwards from logic IMHO. Has anyone ever had to deal with this??...

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal asked for by Ford regarding import duties on some Ford Transit Connect vans. The decision could cost Ford up to $1.3 billion in penalties. The vans were built in Turkey and imported into the U.S. The problem, though, is that Ford declared that they were passenger vans. That meant that the company only had to pay 2.5% import duty on the vehicles, rather than the 25% duty levied against cargo vehicles as part of what is commonly referred to as the “chicken tax.” * snip * It [the Justice Department]...

New Delhi -- The Government on Wednesday asserted that microblogging platform Twitter has lost its legal protection in India because it deliberately chose non-compliance despite multiple opportunities to it. Losing legal protection means Twitter’s top executives, including the nation’s managing director, face police questioning and criminal liability under the Indian Penal Code over “unlawful and inflammatory” content posted by users on Twitter. Accusing Twitter of deliberately refusing to comply with Indian laws, in identical posts on Twitter as well as its Indian rival Koo, Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said Twitter was given “multiple opportunities to comply” but it...

Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz joined the growing list of GOP lawmakers calling for the removal of Dr. Anthony Fauci Tuesday, arguing he is "political and not scientific." Fauci, President Biden's chief medical adviser and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has faced severe backlash following the release of thousands of emails obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests earlier this month, revealing the top doctor's communications from early on in the pandemic. Republicans have taken issue with what they believe is a stance reversal by Fauci on issues ranging from masks mandates to the origin...
