Australian scientists are hailing a world-first laser designed to shunt potentially deadly space junk out of orbit, fired from a Canberra hilltop. EOS Space Systems has developed the technology to protect infrastructure worth $900 billion. The laser, which will be fired from the Mt Stromlo Observatory in Canberra, has been seven years in the making. It was produced as part of a federally-funded research centre involving EOS, the Australian National University, weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin and the Japanese Institute of Communications and Technology. EOS Space Systems CEO Dr Ben Greene described it as a "real breakthrough for space technology". The...

The White House on Tuesday said that President Joe Biden “has a difference of opinion” from Catholics concerned that the Equality Act would trample conscience rights. At Tuesday’s White House press briefing, Owen Jensen of EWTN News Nightly asked what Biden would say to Catholics concerned about conscience rights in health care. “What does the President, who we know is Catholic, say to Catholic doctors, Catholic institutions, who are fearful that if the Equality Act passes, it has the potential to trample on their conscience rights,” Jensen asked White House press secretary Jen Psaki. “What does the President say to...

A Soviet television adaptation of The Lord of the Rings thought to have been lost to time was rediscovered and posted on YouTube last week, delighting Russian-language fans of JRR Tolkien. The 1991 made-for-TV film, Khraniteli, based on Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, is the only adaptation of his Lord of the Rings trilogy believed to have been made in the Soviet Union. Aired 10 years before the release of the first instalment of Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy, the low-budget film appears ripped from another age: the costumes and sets are rudimentary, the special effects are ludicrous, and many...

Pope Francis has called upon the world to reduce its use of fossil fuels and reduce global warming.(Image credit: Mundelein Seminary video)From their plane windows, people traveling to and from Chicago may notice the shape of a cross in a field outside the city. This cross is made entirely of rows of solar panels that help power a Catholic seminary. “The shape of it is really something I think is special,” says Father John Kartje, the rector and president of Mundelein Seminary at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake. He says the 300-kilowatt array, which went online in...

The Democrat-controlled New York legislature has passed a budget deal that includes a $2.1 billion fund for illegal immigrants – including a one-time, $15,600 payment for those who lost their job during the pandemic, in a sweeping move which could benefit nearly 300,000 people in the state. Illegal workers are eligible to receive $15,600 if they can prove they are New York state residents who are ineligible for unemployment benefits due to their immigration status, and lost income due to the pandemic. Other illegals who are unable to meet the same level of verification will be eligible for $3,200....

A Yale University professor and renowned cancer researcher has pored over the COVID-19 literature and treated several dozen patients. He can remain silent no longer.Dr. Alessandro Santin, a practicing oncologist and scientist who runs a large laboratory at Yale, believes firmly that ivermectin could vastly cut suffering from COVID-19. Santin joins a growing group of doctors committed to using the safe, generic drug both as an early home treatment to prevent hospitalization and alongside inpatient treatments like steroids and oxygen.“The bottom line is that ivermectin works. I’ve seen that in my patients as well as treating my own family in...

San Francisco residents are abandoning the city in droves, with a large number leaving to Texas and Florida, according to a report released Thursday by the commercial realty firm CBRE Group. The city lost the most residents out of every major city between 2019 and 2020, with 70 percent moving to nearby Sacramento, according to data that was gathered from the United States Postal Service records through a Freedom of Information Act request. Moves to Texas increased by 32.1 percent and to Florida by 46.2 percent. "Many of the most ambitious people on the planet have lived here," investor Keith...

A North Carolina county paused COVID-19 vaccines at a local immunization site on Thursday after 18 people had “adverse” reactions to Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose shot — after a site in Colorado did the same thing a day earlier. Wake County halted vaccine operations at the PNC Arena in Raleigh following the incidents “out of an abundance of caution,” officials said. More than 2,300 Johnson & Johnson vaccinations were administered at the clinic Thursday and EMS evaluated 18 patients, Wake County said. Fourteen of those people had “minor reactions” and were treated on site, while four others were taken to...

President Joe Biden has caused confusion after predicting some commercial airplanes could fly at speeds of up to 21,000 miles per hour in the next 10 years, faster than the hypersonic weapons under development by the military. “We’re going to talk about commercial aircraft flying at subsonic speeds, supersonic speeds, be able to figuratively, if you may, if we decide to do it, be able to traverse the world in an hour, travel at 21,000 miles an hour," Biden said. The White House has yet to clarify Biden's comments, made during a Wednesday address aimed at promoting his $2.25 trillion...

Former President Donald Trump on Thursday issued a full-throated reelection endorsement for Sen. Rand Paul. The Kentucky Republican will be seeking a third term in office during the 2022 election contest. "Rand Paul has done a fantastic job for our Country, and for the incredible people of Kentucky," Trump said in the statement. "He fights against the Swamp in Washington, the Radical Left Liberals, and especially the destructive RINOS, of which there are far too many, in Congress. "Rand will continue to stand up for our great AMERICA FIRST policies because he believes in stopping wasteful spending, defending our Second...

Republican U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin announced his candidacy for governor of New York on Thursday with an attack on incumbent Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the subject of investigations over sexual harassment allegations and COVID-19 deaths among nursing home residents. “The bottom line is this; to save New York, Andrew Cuomo’s gotta go," Zeldin, a fourth-term Congress member from Long Island, said in a news release. Zeldin, 41, promised to bring “the kind of relentless, fighting spirit towards helping to save our state that Andrew Cuomo only reserves for multi-million dollar self-congratulatory book deals, cover-ups, abuse and self-dealing.” Cuomo, who has...

David Chipman, the gun control activist who President Biden nominated today to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) claimed last year that members of the Branch Davidian sect shot down two helicopters during a standoff with federal agents in Waco in 1993. That is certainly an odd statement considering it didn’t happen and Chipman served 25 years with the ATF. Chipman posted the comments as part of a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” event and even posted a photograph on the Reddit thread to confirm his identity. In response to a comment about the Waco siege from...

As TFTP reported last year, it was reported that the top climate change scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration received $4 million in funding from Congress along with permission to study two highly controversial geoengineering methods in an attempt to cool the Earth. According to Science Magazine, David Fahey, director of the Chemical Sciences Division of NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory, told his staff last week that the federal government is ready to examine the science behind “geoengineering”—or what he dubbed a “Plan B” for climate change. "River" is a song by Canadian singer songwriter Joni Mitchell, from her 1971 album Blue. Written on piano, it has become a standard for artists in many music styles, and holds second place among Mitchell's songs most recorded by other artists. The song is about the recent breakup of a romantic relationship at Christmastime, with the singer longing to escape her painful emotional bonds. The piano accompaniment to the vocal borrows heavily from the tune to the 19th-century winter song "Jingle Bells".Joni Mitchell - "River" (1971)

When it comes to cognitive longevity, drinking a daily cup of tea is one of the tastiest, cheapest, and healthiest habits. Whichever type of tea you prefer, whether hot or iced, each sip is doing your body a favor. Different herbal teas offer different health benefits. Chamomile, for example, is linked to helping keep blood sugar levels steady and alleviating the symptoms of PMS. Yerba mate tea offers a natural energy boost. And on the beautiful Greek island of Ikaria, locals sip on savory teas steeped with herbs often overlooked in other parts of the world. Ikaria is a so-called...

At the end of my last column for SteynOnline, I asked: "What can patriots do to retake their beloved nation?" Space permits only a few quick thoughts today. I hope to add more in the future, but just for starters: We could do worse than getting to know our enemy. Not just know them, but really get inside their heads to understand where they're coming from, and why. This is what I see. The strange figures known as Wokists currently destroying America aren't just reprises of earlier enemies. They represent something rather new. The political cult of Wokism combines the...
