One of the things happening in South Dakota is an infection rate that's among the worst in the nation, at about 8,000 cases per 100,000 people. In Vermont, another small, rural state with a Republican governor, Gov. Phil Scott has embraced safety measures, and the differences are pretty stark. Like South Dakota, Vermont has fewer than 1 million residents, most of whom don't live in cities. It has about 500 cases per 100,000 people. That's the lowest rate in the nation.

Editor’s note: This article by Oriana Pawlyk originally appeared on Military.com, a leading source of news for the military and veteran community. A U.S. Navy investigation has determined that the Saudi pilot who killed three people when he opened fire on Florida's Naval Air Station Pensacola last year was self-radicalized. However, it also found that Navy leaders could have picked up on a pattern of negative behaviors exacerbated by the "toxic" command climate at the base. In a 260-page investigation released Friday, investigators concluded that, while 2nd Lt. Mohammed Alshamrani, a 21-year-old Royal Saudi Air Force member, was motivated by...

ROME -- Pope Francis is supporting demands for racial justice in the wake of the U.S. police killing of George Floyd and is blasting COVID-19 skeptics and media organizations that spread their conspiracies in a new book penned during the Vatican’s coronavirus lockdown. In “Let Us Dream,” Francis also criticizes populist politicians who whip up rallies in ways reminiscent of the 1930s, and the hypocrisy of “rigid” conservative Catholics who support them. But he also criticizes the forceful downing of historic statues during protests for racial equality this year as a misguided attempt to “purify the past.” The 150-page book,...

The Vatican quietly announced at the end of October that liturgical celebrations in St. Peter’s in the “coming months” would have “very limited participation of the faithful,” in compliance with “foreseen protective measures, barring...

The Anglican Church of Canada's Primate, Linda Nicholls has written to Canada's Minister of Justice to voice her support for Bill C-6, a bill which would criminalize conversion therapy. If this should pass, a therapist, psychotherapist, counsellor or psychiatrist who agrees to help someone resist unwanted same-sex attraction would be committing a criminal act and face fines and possible jail time. At a deeper level it is a fundamental denial of free speech. So, a person who experiences same-sex attraction has no choice but to accept his or her unwanted attractions. Let me repeat: no choice. The reason for this,...

More than 120 Islamists in Germany pose a "high risk," according to the country's investigative police agency. A deadly attack in Dresden last month forced authorities to increase surveillance of dangerous Islamists. The agency also listed 151 people as posing a "moderate risk." Bellevue, NE – A new Nebraska state law that bans a risky, yet common procedure used to abort babies in the second trimester has gone into effect without legal challenge, but the one abortionist who the law would most affect is denying he uses the procedure – a denial Operation Rescue believes to be patently false. The new law, known as Legislative Bill 814, bans the use of an abortion process known as Dilation and Evacuation (D&E). That involves slowly dilating a woman’s cervix then removing the unborn baby through dismemberment. Sometimes a drug called Digoxin is used to stop...

JANICE DEAN: “I didn’t think that the governor could make surprise me more after his 'leadership book,' of course, was released over a month ago. And he has been on a self-congratulations tour to all of the television and radio stations talking about his leadership and how he flattened the curve here in New York City as cases rise. My in-laws were on the curve he flattened. So it is jaw-dropping, insulting, sickening to see him accept an award for his leadership that we don’t have answers to when it comes to the Coronavirus patients going into nursing homes for...
