Road Trip: United States Naval Academy, Maryland

MDnavalacademy2

The United States Naval Academy (USNA, Annapolis, or simply Navy) is a federal service academy adjacent to Annapolis, Maryland. Established on 10 October 1845, under Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, it is the second oldest of the five U.S. service academies, and educates officers for commissioning primarily into the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps.

MDnavalacademy6

Candidates for admission generally must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a Member of Congress. Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as midshipmen. Tuition for midshipmen is fully funded by the Navy in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Approximately 1,200 "plebes" (an abbreviation of the Ancient Roman word plebeian) enter the Academy each summer for the rigorous Plebe Summer. About 1,000 midshipmen graduate.

MDnavalacademy5

Graduates are usually commissioned as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps, but a small number can also be cross-commissioned as officers in other U.S. services, and the services of allied nations. The United States Naval Academy has some of the highest paid graduates in the country according to starting salary.

The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades midshipmen's performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics. Midshipmen are required to adhere to the academy's Honor Concept.

MDnavalacademy4

Because the majority of graduates commence directly into their military commissions, the Naval Academy offers no graduate degree programs. However, a number of programs allow midshipmen to obtain graduate degrees before fulfilling their service obligation. The Immediate Graduate Education Program (IGEP) allows newly commissioned Ensigns or Second Lieutenants to proceed directly to graduate school and complete a master's degree.

The Voluntary Graduate Education Program (VGEP) allows the midshipman to begin their studies the second semester of their senior year at a local university, usually University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, or George Washington University, and complete the degree by the following semester.

November 24

Taught by Turkeys

Bible in a Year:

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Matthew 6:26

Do you know what a group of turkeys is called? It’s called a rafter. Why am I writing about turkeys? Because I’ve just returned from a weekend at a mountain cabin. Each day, I marveled at the train of turkeys parading past our porch.

I’d never turkey-watched before. They scratched fiercely with spectacular talons. Then they hunted and pecked at the ground. Eating, I assume. (Since this was my first turkey-observation time, I wasn’t 100 percent positive.) The scrawny scrubs in the area didn’t look like they could sustain anything. Yet here were these turkeys, a dozen of them, all of which looked delectably plump.

Watching those well-fed turkeys brought to mind Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:26: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” Jesus uses God’s provision for seemingly worthless birds to remind us of His care for us. If a bird’s life matters, how much more does ours? Jesus then contrasts fretting about our daily needs (vv. 27–31) with a life in which we “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness” (v. 33), one in which we’re confident of His rich provision for our needs. Because if God can care for that rafter of wild turkeys, He can certainly look after you and me.

Reflect & Pray

Where have you seen God provide for something that you were worrying about? How might remembering and reflecting on His provision in the past help you not to be anxious in the future?

Father, sometimes I get scared. I worry. I struggle to trust. Thank You for Your care for me. Help me to remember Your provision in the past so I’m better able to trust You with future fears.

Yo radu, sorry I missed you yesterday, all the yard work that needs to be done is finished until the next wind comes through and blows the rest of the leaves down. I wish they'd all fall at once, *sigh*

We're into real yucky, cold weather now, not much sun this week.

'Sup your way?

My husband is a USNA graduate, who took his commission in the Marine Corp. I think is was only 10% of his class. No women back then. Of course, my Marine, said it was a great place to be from, but a terrible place to live! Went to class reunion last year. Haven’t gotten used to the females, and the males looked like babies.

Howdy, PRO!

Yeah, it WOULD be nice if all the leaves would fall at once. It’s a pain having to go back over what you’ve raked once (or more times) already.

Our weather hasn’t been very pretty either. A cold front came through yesterday with a little rain and another one is on the way for Wed. morning. That one could have storms and WILL have strong wind. I’m doing the grocery shopping tomorrow so I can hide out Wed. LOL

“...a great place to be from, but a terrible place to live!”

Whether of not that’s original, from what I can recall, you got that right,
though I’d say hard instead of terrible.

my grandparents lived in a tiny appt in Annapolis right on a red brick steet with the oldest State Capitol in the country 100 yards away....the Naval academy was right down the street...

when we were kids we would visit..10 people stuffed into a tiny appt without air conditioning and it was so hot and muggy...

it was a kids dream though...we could run around Annapolis liked we owned the place...we pestered all the old ladies in the antique and gift shops...we'd run around the Academy...we'd run around the State Capitol....

their apartment was right above a little Greek restaurant, which is now an Irish bar....

we loved Annapolis....so enjoy...
