Two Republican senators have voiced their opposition to holding a confirmation vote on any nominee to the Supreme Court before Election Day as President Donald Trump and key Republicans signaled they are moving ahead without delay. Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) over the weekend said the Senate shouldn’t hold a vote on a nominee until after Nov. 3. Neither indicated if their opposition to a vote would translate into a vote against a nominee, in the likely case that Trump moves forward with the nomination and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) follows through on his vow...

Iran's Revolutionary Guard on Saturday threatened to avenge the killing of its top general, saying it would go after everyone responsible for the January U.S. drone strike in Iraq. The guard's website quoted Gen. Hossein Salami as saying, "Mr. Trump! Our revenge for martyrdom of our great general is obvious, serious and real." President Trump warned this week that Washington would harshly respond to any Iranian attempts to take revenge for the death of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, tweeting that "if they hit us in any way, any form, written instructions already done we're going to hit them 1000 times harder."...

Bard College Sells Out Campus Week: Does George Soros’ new educational initiative rent out universities as vehicles for politics? GENNADY SHKLIAREVSKY SEPTEMBER 16, 2020 In January, George Soros pledged $1 billion to endow a network of universities across the world in a vast and expansive new educational initiative. This is a matter of more than purely academic interest for me, as I am a professor emeritus of history at Bard College—one of the flagship institutions that Soros and his organization, the Open Society Foundations (OSF), have taken on as a partner in the venture. Soros describes his initiative as an...

Marc Short, Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff, cited “historical precedent” to push back on CNN anchor Jake Tapper during a Sunday morning “State of the Union” debate about the battle over the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s open Supreme Court seat. The discussion came a day after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would bring to a vote President Donald Trump’s pick to replace Ginsburg, who died Friday of metastatic pancreatic cancer. Democrats and media figures have accused Republicans of hypocrisy for withholding a vote to President Barack Obama’s pick of Merrick Garland to replace the late...

I heard the news of a “Dune” remake due out in 2020. I saw the endless comparisons to the disastrous movie that came out in 1984. Sting goes shirtless! Picard is a warrior! The ending nullifies the entire freaking point of the book by making the deliberately bred super-human and culturally manipulative character magically conjure rain. The interesting chasm I discovered was when I said in response to this news, “Another Dune remake?” To which others said, “What other Dune movie?” I know Syfy has made a number of B-list sci-fi movies, but their Dune remakes a decade ago were...

Keane said that, in addition to enforcing sanctions and ending the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, Trump’s brokering the restoration of diplomatic ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates is a game change dramatically against the mullahs,” Keane said. “This is not just a historical event. It’s a geopolitical paradigm shift.” “I think the steps the United States took this week – and that is, we are finally going to put together a political, economic and military alliance with the countries in the Middle East to confront Iran,” Keane told Breitbart News. “That I think is the most significant political...

Washington: Attending the White House signing ceremony on Tuesday of the Abraham Accords – which normalize relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain – was both moving and jarring. Standing at the South Lawn, just meters from the Rose Garden where the Oslo Accord were signed 27 years ago on September 13, 1993, the comparison between the two agreements was inescapable. That ceremony was an act of political theater unsurpassed in the history of Israel. Yasser Arafat, chairman of the PLO, and architect of modern terrorism, grinned ear to ear as he received the royal treatment on...

A veteran federal prosecutor was tabbed Monday to lead a grand jury investigation into the May 30 shooting death of a 22-year-old black man by a white bar owner in downtown Omaha. Frederick D. Franklin, a long-serving federal prosecutor, will lead the grand jury of 16 citizens and three alternates as they probe the death of James Scurlock. Presiding Douglas County District Judge Shelly Stratman appointed Franklin. The grand jury will investigate and either bring charges or no indictment against Jake Gardner, the 38-year-old former owner of The Hive and Gatsby bars downtown. Jurors also could choose to issue a...

A vigil speaker declared that her organization and its allies would do whatever it takes to keep the Senate from holding hearings on a new Trump nominee, no matter who it is. In the wake of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death Friday, Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) quickly signaled how vicious the last two months of this election season will be.Both senators spoke at a vigil for Ginsburg Saturday night. A Michigan resident’s apparent joke showing disdain for voting by mail is no laughing matter for one election official. The resident put a toilet on their lawn with a sign that says, “Place Mail In Ballots Here.” Barb Byrum, the Democratic clerk of Ingham County, filed a complaint with police over the display, saying it could mislead people who aren’t familiar with the voting system. “It is a felony to take illegal possession of an absentee ballot,” Byrum said Friday.

Editor’s note: Publius Vergilius Maro, the Roman poet known to history as Virgil, died in 19 B.C. Saul Alinsky, the American radical and inspiration to both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, died in 1972. However, for both of these legendary historical figures, their words, and their ideas, abide forever. So our Virgil had no trouble conducting this shade-to-shade interview with Alinsky. VIRGIL: Saul, please tell us a little bit about yourself. ALINSKY: I was born in Chicago in 1909, and as a young man I worked for various communist causes. Beginning in the late 1930s, I chose to focus my...

Former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton accused President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) of having a destructive lust for power on Sunday’s broadcast of NBC’s “Meet the Press.” While discussing a nominee to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Clinton said, “I was able to watch your previous interviews with Senators Klobuchar and Barrasso, and Senator Barrasso is doing an epic job trying to defend the indefensible. The system has been broken for quite a while, but clearly, the decision that Mitch McConnell made back in 2016 in...

A woman suspected of trying to poison President Trump has reportedly been arrested. CNN reported Sunday evening, citing “a U.S. law enforcement official,” said that the unnamed woman was taken when she tried to cross from Canada into the U.S. A package containing the poison ricin was sent to Mr. Trump earlier this week but intercepted by law enforcement. The woman was carrying a gun when arrested, CNN reported. Charges are expected to be filed by U.S. prosecutors in Washington, although the short investigation has been a joint U.S.-Canadian enterprise.

As bad as the COVID-19 lockdown has been in any number of sectors of the US economy, colleges and universities have been hit particularly hard. Restaurants and movie theaters have physical plants that continue to cost them money regardless of whether they are serving food or showing movies. Hotels have it even worse, because they are far more expensive to maintain. But colleges and universities have it worse still. Their physical plants include not only housing and dining facilities, but also recreation areas, classrooms, and expansive grounds. In addition, colleges and universities have staff that often number hundreds of times...
