The first Navarro memo was dated Jan. 29 and was addressed to the White House National Security Council, according to The New York Times, which first reported on the document. You can tell we're getting restless -- twitching and twisting and otherwise maneuvering ourselves into the familiar postures that characterized life, say, last January. We're homesick -- sick of being at home and making allowances for spouses, children, boarders, TV personalities. And presidents. We're ready to blame others and cast aspersions -- poor-mouth according to our wont. Back to our personal standards of perfection: we the blame-casters against the fools and rogues around us. Don't they see what we see? Rarely. I exempt no political tribe: though I cannot forbear to note the contribution of a New York Times writer,...

“I believe that even though we should believe women and that is an important thing,” she said on a radio show. She continued, “And what that statement really means is that for so long the go to has been not to believe them. So we have to sort of societally change that mindset to believing women. But that does not mean at the expense of not, you know, giving men their due process and investigating situations. “It’s gotta be fair in both directions.”

New research from an international team of scientists is suggesting that instantly recognizable earthy smell after rain is released by bacteria trying to attract a particular arthropod as a way to spread its spores. The smell is a 500-million-year-old example of chemical communication, evolved to help a particular type of bacteria spread. Scientists have long been fascinated by the unique odor that appears when it rains. The scent is particularly prominent when the first rains of a season hit dry soil. Two Australian researchers named the odor petrichor, after an influential study in the 1960s suggested a particular oil is...

The Economist tweeted out a story headlined “Big tech’s covid-19 opportunity” with the caption: “Big tech firms are now vital utilities. Once this crisis ends, governments could push for state control of them as they have over energy firms.” The Financial Times’s Editorial Board’s editorial, headlined “Virus lays bare the frailty of the social contract,” pivoted off the pandemic to argue that “to demand collective sacrifice you must offer a social contract that benefits everyone.”

Specifically, Newton used his gifts of observation and reason to outline the Laws of Motion and Optics and to invent calculus. And the legendary falling apple...

Something odd is happening – or perhaps not so odd. The coronavirus is causing more Americans to seek out, rely on, and expressly draw comfort from prayer – placing their faith in a loving God’s mercy. This is not a matter of conjecture, but survey-supported fact. According to the non-partisan Pew Foundation, more Americans admit they are turning to prayer in this coronavirus crisis than at any recent time. Just as during the height of World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, Americans are revisiting faith. In 2017, the Pew Foundation reported, after surveying 35,000 Americans, that...
