Mark your calendars because today is the day Townhall Senior Columnist Kurt Schlichter agreed with Big Chief Warren and Scat Francisco Congresscreature Nancy Pelosi. Yes, they are correct that Americans rejected Sitting Bolshevik because she was a woman, specifically, because she was a very, very annoying woman who, besides her track record of tacky lies, was very, very annoying in a uniquely female way. Putting aside that she is the Bud Light of faculty lounge socialism, Americans had no desire to spend four years with some national librarian in the Oval Office pestering us about using our inside voices and...

“All tyrannies,” wrote Algernon Sidney, “had their beginnings from corruption.” He drew most of his illustrations in Discourses Concerning Government from the Roman experience, which, in little over a hundred years, fell from the heights of ancient liberty and virtue into the basest tyranny. The reward for high public service in republican Rome were honors typically bestowed upon victorious generals by a grateful people. Sidney related the Roman’s steadfast attention to the rule of law. Prior acts of selflessness for the public good did not cancel out subsequent crimes against the public good, “and none can be exempted from the...

What you may consider to be a quintessentially American invention is actually mentioned in an ancient Roman cookbook called Apicius. The text was written by an unknown author sometime between the late 4th and 5th century AD and contains lots of recipes. One of those recipes describes a dish called 'Isicia Omentata'. It details how a cook should use minced meat, pepper, pine nuts and a rich fish-based sauce and form them all into a patty shape. This Roman delicacy looks very similar to modern day burgers once cooked. The Romans are also credited for being big users of 'fast...

Dangling from an abseil rope 30ft up a river gorge rock face, archaeologist Jon Allison certainly felt close to the Romans who had worked on that same spot 1,800 years ago. They left their mark in the shape of graffiti composed of inscriptions and carved faces, and studying the messages produced the sensation of the quarry work gang communicating across the centuries. The carvings reveal that soldiers of the Second and 20th legions were detailed to operate in the quarry as part of the major repairing and re-building of Hadrian's Wall. And as a serving soldier himself for 22 years,...

March 09 2020 Monday of the Second Week in Lent Reading 1 Dn 9:4b-10 “Lord, great and awesome God, you who keep your merciful covenant toward those who love you and observe your commandments! We have sinned, been wicked and done evil; we have rebelled and departed from your commandments and your laws. We have not obeyed your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, our fathers, and all the people of the land. Justice, O Lord, is on your side; we are shamefaced even to this day: we, the men of Judah,...

In the increasingly urbanized world, few people still ride horses for reasons beyond sport or leisure. However, on horseback, people, goods and ideas moved across vast distances, shaping the power structures and social systems of the premechanized era. From the trade routes of the Silk Road or the great Mongol Empire to the equestrian nations of the American Great Plains, horses were the engines of the ancient world. Where, when and how did humans first domesticate horses? Tracing the origins of horse domestication in the prehistoric era has proven to be an exceedingly difficult task. Horses -- and the people...

A mix of legacy drugmakers and small startups have stepped forward with plans to develop vaccines or treatments that target the infection caused by the novel coronavirus. COVID-19, which was first detected in December in Wuhan, China, has sickened more than 100,000 people worldwide and killed at least 3,400. There are no Food and Drug Administration-approved vaccines or therapies for the disease. In the U.S., the companies that are initiating development have received funding from two organizations: the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), which is a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, and the National...

South American nation holds miniature Amazon Synod, issues radical demands March 6, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — The Catholic Church in French Guiana, one of the nine countries of the Amazon Basin represented at the Amazon Synod in Rome last October, recently held its second local synod with many winks to the Roman event.
