The Episcopal Church's House of Bishops met in Kanuga, NC this past week in an attempt to put lipstick on a pig. Michael Curry's much ballyhooed "way of love", an advance certainly on Frank Griswold's Circle Dance of Dispossession, and other Sufi ramblings, saw the HOB get an evangelical wakeup call from two speakers, who would, in times past, have been shown the door, not invited in. The first was a woman bishop from the African American Methodist Church, whose denominational mandate is "to seek out and save the lost and to serve the needy." TEC hasn't saved a soul...

Goldman Sachs expanded a year-old program to hire more workers from underrepresented groups, including goals for black and Latino hires for the first time. The firm has set "aspirational goals" of having half of all new analysts and entry-level associates hired in the U.S. be women, 11 percent black, and 14 percent Latino, according to a staff memo sent Monday. The firm set a lower goal for black hires in the U.K., where it is seeking a 9 percent level. By increasing the ranks of women and minorities at entry-level positions — analysts and associates are the two most junior...

'Why shouldn't we pray for gender equality in the Church?' says Sister Ruth Schönenberger The leader of one of Germany's most important female religious communities has called into question the Catholic Church's exclusion of women from the ordained priesthood. "It is surely only natural for women to be priests and I cannot understand the reasons given as to why not," said Sister Ruth Schönenberger, head of the Benedictine Priory of Tutzing, the Bavarian motherhouse of a worldwide missionary order. "I am surprised that the presence of Christ has been reduced to the male sex," she said in a recent interview...

President Trump secured the Republican presidential nomination on May 3, 2016, when he crushed a final “Never Trump” effort to stop him in the Indiana primary. At the GOP Data Trust, a voter outreach organization based in Washington, the mood was bleak. It was clear Trump was heading for a blowout victory. When Trump had delivered his victory speech shortly after 9 p.m., Data Trust staffer Courtney Mullen invited her colleagues to attend an “end of the world” happy hour to mark Trump’s triumph, which the party establishment had watched in horror.

HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — A new HopCat opening in Holland this year will bring 160 jobs to the area. The HopCat at 84 West 8th Street is expected to open in late April. (Summary: In many ways, public schools seem deliberately organized to diminish intellect, not to enlarge it.)An acquaintance sent this note: “My sister tells of teaching math to college freshmen. The question was: If X plus 5 = 10, what is the value of X? It took her an entire week to get the kids to finally say ‘5.’ So the following Monday, just on a hunch, she gave them another problem: If Y plus 5 = 10, what is the value of Y? And no one could answer!” Remember, these students have been admitted to a community college. Presumably, many...

Readers of this blog are already familiar with Glide Memorial, a radical progressive congregation in San Francisco that recently severed ties with the United Methodist Church (UMC). Legal fights between Glide and the UMC’s California-Nevada Annual Conference continue, but occasionally there is something or someone that we suspect regular readers will find noteworthy, such as an Islamic Drag Queen. Enter “Drag & Spirituality: Claiming Our Sanctuary” – “This talk show-style conversation will explore the intersections of drag, gender, sexuality and spirituality. Our host & event curator, B0NNi33 Vi0L3T, aka Duane Quintana, a queer chaplain, will interview ground-breaking local drag queens,...

LEICESTER, United Kingdom - Ireland’s bishops have called the requirement that applicants to new posts at Dublins’s National Maternity Hospital be willing to carry out elective abortions, a violation of a doctor’s “constitutional and human right to freedom of conscience.” The recent advertisement for consultants in obstetrics/gynecology and anesthesia at the hospital said they must be willing to carry out abortions to be considered for the positions. “A doctor who is eminently qualified to work as a consultant in these fields is denied employment in these roles because of his/her conscience,” the bishops said in a March 13 statement. “Doctors...

LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. — Sen. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.) spoke with President Trump about the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Wednesday, after days of unprecedented attacks by a sitting president on a dead war hero. McSally, addressing reporters after a meeting with base commanders here Thursday, expanded on a tweet she sent Wednesday in which she called McCain a hero. The tweet did not mention Trump, and in her remarks Thursday she again refrained from criticizing the president. "I made it clear, I love John McCain. John McCain is an American hero. This state reveres John McCain, and...

MADISON, Wis. — A judge on Thursday temporarily blocked Wisconsin Republicans' contentious lame-duck laws limiting the powers of new Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, who immediately used his restored authority to pull the state out of a multistate challenge to the Affordable Care Act. Dane County Circuit Judge Richard Niess brushed aside GOP concerns that striking down the lame-duck laws would leave thousands of other statutes passed in so-called extraordinary sessions susceptible to challenge.

Anne Trickey lied in a complaint filed in US District Court on February 1, 2019. Trickey claimed a former street artist in SF stole 1-3 images from a social media page and is selling them on a unspecified web site. Trickey filed worked on this case during office hours; using CCSF time; computers and mail supplies. Migraine headaches, fatigue and dizziness were sidelining Bert Henriksen several times a week. Evenings were the worst, after his 50-km commute home in his 2017 Ford Explorer. His behaviour grew erratic. He’d get angry over minor things. “We were getting scared that he had some kind of a brain problem,” said his wife, Megan. An answer came last March in a phone call from his doctor: A blood test revealed Henriksen had been exposed to toxic levels of carbon monoxide gas. But how? He says his prime suspect was parked in his driveway. Henriksen is among more than 3,000 Ford...

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday tried to explain her lack of office hours by saying she’s still taking “baby steps” — but said constituents who can’t work with her sporadic schedule should follow her on Twitter. "Right now we’re just taking these baby steps and adapting according to community feedback,” the 29-year-old told The Post when asked why her brief availability was in the middle of the day. “We don’t want to be too concrete, we adapt to the feedback of the community, so if we hear that folks want more evening hours we’re happy to do that.” Asked what...

President Donald Trump has a low approval rating. He is engaging in bitter Twitter wars and facing metastasizing investigations. But if the election were held today, he’d likely ride to a second term in a huge landslide, according to multiple economic models with strong track records of picking presidential winners and losses. Credit a strong U.S. economy featuring low unemployment, rising wages and low gas prices — along with the historic advantage held by incumbent presidents. While Trump appears to be in a much stronger position than his approval rating and conventional Beltway wisdom might suggest, he also could wind...

Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign plans to offset all carbon emissions from travel, it announced Thursday morning. “Bernie Sanders is a champion in the fight for climate justice and, like him, we know we need to address our emissions through action, not just rhetoric,” campaign manager Faiz Shakir said in a statement. “We are proud to lead the way in the fight against climate change by acting boldly to move our energy system away from fossil fuels and towards sustainable energy sources.” The campaign said it will partner with NativeEnergy, a Vermont-based carbon offsets provider, to invest in...

Given the new efforts in New York and other states controlled by radical Democrats to expand late-term abortions and even legalize infanticide, an archeology report published earlier this month takes on new, present-day application. What does archeology have to do with late-term abortion or infanticide? That answer lies in the similarities of between what we are seeing in the Abortion Cartel today and what archeologists have recently discovered at the site of the largest known child sacrifice event in the world. The disturbing archeological report detailed excavations at a Peruvian site known as Huanchaquito-Las Llamas. Even archeologists were shocked at...

President Trump: “Excuse me, they didn’t put themselves down as neo-Nazis, and you had some very bad people in that group. But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. You had people in that group – excuse me, excuse me, I saw the same pictures you did. You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down of, to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.” Trump became even more explicit: “I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and white...

A New Zealand artist redrew the nation's traditional silver fern emblem to show Muslim worshippers in different stages of prayer in response to the terror attack that targeted two mosques in Christchurch last week that left at least 50 people dead. Artist Pat Campbell, who also creates cartoons for Australia's Canberra Times newspaper, told CNN in an interview this week that she drew the illustration in memory of those killed in the mosque shootings. "Initially I drew 49 figures. When the number was revised to 50, I added another silhouette," Campbell told the news agency on Wednesday. The illustration...

A newly discovered fossil site in China that dates back 518 million years contains more than 50% previously unknown species, according to a new study. The well-preserved Qingjiang site is helping scientists to fill gaps in the fossil record and provide a clearer picture of some of the earliest animal ecosystems. The site is unique in that it not only includes well-preserved fossils but soft-bodied organisms as well. Some of the animals include corals, sponges, sea anemones, jellyfish, comb jellies, arthropods and tiny invertebrates called mud dragons, as well as microscopic fossils.
