The deadline for New York Times newsroom managers to take voluntary buyouts came and went yesterday — without reaching the target of 30 takers. Now, insiders are worried that involuntary cuts — layoffs — will start. Jill Abramson, the executive editor overseeing the process, declined to comment yesterday as the deadline passed but several insiders worried that as few as a dozen raised their hands and volunteered — meaning up to 18 heads must roll.

Gee, maybe one day we'll look back and realize that the advent of Barack Obama was the day "when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal." Politico, at least, apparently thinks so. Not everyone will have to abide by Senator Dianne Feinstein's gun control bill. If the proposed legislation becomes law, government officials and others will be exempt. "Mrs. Feinstein's measure would exempt more than 2,200 types of hunting and sporting rifles; guns manually operated by bolt, pump, lever or slide action; and weapons used by government officials, law enforcement and retired law enforcement personnel," the Washington Times reports.

The unnamed man will be charged with the "preparation of terrorist acts" contrary to section five of the Terrorism Act 2006. He was arrested by counter terrorism (SO15) officers investigating people travelling to Syria to support terrorist activities. He will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court in London on Friday.

ELYRIA, Ohio, - An Ohio judge ordered an admitted deadbeat dad not to have any more children until he proves he can support the four he already has. Asim Taylor, 35, of Elyria was ordered not to procreate during the 5-year probation he was given by Lorain County Judge James Walther after pleading guilty to nearly $79,000 in unpaid child support going back to 2009. The Elyria Morning Journal said Walther wrote his order is in the "interests of doing justice, rehabilitating the offender." U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, newly returned to Congress after suffering a stroke, is becoming a central figure in the Senate's gun control debate. An aide in Kirk's office has confirmed that the Highland Park Republican is working with two Democrats to draft bipartisan gun control legislation. One of those is Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, of New York, with whom Kirk is working on legislation to crack down on gun trafficking. Schools in the area are asking students about suggestions on security at the same time schools are putting in place valid measures for control of access to the school. One must show ID and wear badges to be able to enter the school. All of that is fine. However, when students brought up the fact that almost ALL of the doors providing entry to the school are glass, the teacher told them one must also consider cost.

The National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) Summary of Operations for fiscal year 2012, released last week, shows an agency that is significantly over-funded. In 2010, the Obama Administration increased the agency’s budget even though it previously operated with a fiscal year-end surplus.
