  • Tricky Times target (18 editors to be laid off at the NY Times!)

    NY Post ^ | 1/25/13 | Keith Kelly
The deadline for New York Times newsroom managers to take voluntary buyouts came and went yesterday — without reaching the target of 30 takers. Now, insiders are worried that involuntary cuts — layoffs — will start. Jill Abramson, the executive editor overseeing the process, declined to comment yesterday as the deadline passed but several insiders worried that as few as a dozen raised their hands and volunteered — meaning up to 18 heads must roll.

Gee, maybe one day we'll look back and realize that the advent of Barack Obama was the day "when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal." Politico, at least, apparently thinks so. In an item today, Politico claimed that "Obama’s choice of John Kerry as the nation’s top diplomat is the strongest signal to the international community — and the smart set in Washington’s political class — that the president is truly committed to striking deals designed to save the world."
  • Feinstein Gun Control Bill to Exempt Government Officials

Not everyone will have to abide by Senator Dianne Feinstein's gun control bill. If the proposed legislation becomes law, government officials and others will be exempt. "Mrs. Feinstein's measure would exempt more than 2,200 types of hunting and sporting rifles; guns manually operated by bolt, pump, lever or slide action; and weapons used by government officials, law enforcement and retired law enforcement personnel," the Washington Times reports.

IS THIS THE FUTURE OF AMERICA? IMMIGRANTS HELPING TERRORISTS? - A 31-year-old man has been arrested in London on suspicion of terror offences in Syria, Scotland Yard has said. The unnamed man will be charged with the "preparation of terrorist acts" contrary to section five of the Terrorism Act 2006. Andre Barbosa can safely say that he has one of the nicest homes on the block in Boca Raton, Florida. But the 23-year-old Brazilian national does not own or even rent the palatial $2.5million estate legally - he is a squatter. Barbosa, originally from the neighboring Pompano Beach, moved into 580 Golden Harbour Drive in July Now he is threatening to use an obscure real estate law that allows people to claim a property as their own if they stay there for seven years. No one witnessed Barbosa breaking into the 7,522-squae foot, five-bedroom, six-bathroom waterfront home, so he cannot...

ELYRIA, Ohio, - An Ohio judge ordered an admitted deadbeat dad not to have any more children until he proves he can support the four he already has. Asim Taylor, 35, of Elyria was ordered not to procreate during the 5-year probation he was given by Lorain County Judge James Walther after pleading guilty to nearly $79,000 in unpaid child support going back to 2009. The Elyria Morning Journal said Walther wrote his order is in the "interests of doing justice, rehabilitating the offender." Walther's order can be lifted if Taylor proves he has the wherewithal to support another child...

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, newly returned to Congress after suffering a stroke, is becoming a central figure in the Senate's gun control debate. An aide in Kirk's office has confirmed that the Highland Park Republican is working with two Democrats to draft bipartisan gun control legislation. One of those is Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, of New York, with whom Kirk is working on legislation to crack down on gun trafficking. "Proud to partner w/@Senator Kirk to introduce the Gun Trafficking Prevention Act next week — common sense, bipartisan gun safety reform," Gillibrand, of New Brunswick, tweeted Thursday.

Opposite Day can be a whole lot of fun. It can also be very, very confusing. This special day is celebrated primarily among school children. Sponge Bob Square Pants even got into...

Schools in the area are asking students about suggestions on security at the same time schools are putting in place valid measures for control of access to the school. One must show ID and wear badges to be able to enter the school. All of that is fine. However, when students brought up the fact that almost ALL of the doors providing entry to the school are glass, the teacher told them one must also consider cost.

I'm sure by now that most everyone has heard about Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and his remarks at the Republican National Committee's winter meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina. Before I get to the bulk of my post, let me preface it by saying I am not endorsing or disregarding Governor Jindal's remarks. I do, however, believe they merit a discussion. To do anything less is to be naive about the condition of the Republican Party. Changes, you say? Yes, I said the changes the Republican Party needs to make. If we do not, we may as well resign our party...

The National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) Summary of Operations for fiscal year 2012, released last week, shows an agency that is significantly over-funded. In 2010, the Obama Administration increased the agency’s budget even though it previously operated with a fiscal year-end surplus. Now, the operating report reveals that the agency’s business continues to erode with the decline of unionization in the private sector making its increased appropriation even more unnecessary than it was in 2010. According to the report, issued by Acting General Counsel Lafe Solomon, total case intake decreased by three percent; unfair labor practice case intake decreased by...
  • Scarborough: Blood Will Be On Pentagon's Hands If It Lowers Standards For Women

Joe Scarborough was a voice in the politically-correct wilderness this morning on the subject of women in combat. On today's Morning Joe, as other panelists voiced unerring if occasionally cautious support for the Pentagon's decision to permit women in combat, Scarborough sounded a stern warning note. "I'll be damned; if we find out that the Pentagon is lowering standards for politically-correct reasons, then you know what? Then the blood of dead Americans in future battles will be on their hands." View the video here.

President Obama, in dogged pursuit of his liberal Nirvana, is free to lift the ban on women serving in combat positions. He is, alas, unable to repeal the laws of nature, physics or gravity. Ask a combat veteran you know how he would have felt knowing that, after being wounded in combat, the only person around to pick him up and carry him to safety was a 5-foot-3, 120-pound woman. Ask any active duty serviceman how he’d feel knowing that, as he lay on the ground bleeding, the only thing between him and a cave-hardened Tali-ban killer was a 20-year-old...

Leave Room for God "When it pleased God . . ." —Galatians 1:15 As servants of God, we must learn to make room for Him-to give God “elbow room.” We plan and figure and predict that this or that will happen, but we forget to make room for God to come in as He chooses. Would we be surprised if God came into our meeting or into our preaching in a way we had never expected Him to come? Do not look for God to come in a particular way, but do look for Him. The way to make...

A TOXIC substance has been found in New Zealand milk, in a potential blow to the nation's $NZ11.5 billion ($9.2 billion) dairy industry. The country's two biggest fertiliser companies, Ravensdown and Ballance Agri-Nutrients, have suspended sales of a chemical treatment sold to farmers after low levels of dicyandiamide, or DCD, were found in dairy products.
