SARASOTA - The city that guards its bayfront against ugly bridges and homeless boaters made way for a gigantic smooching sailor on Tuesday night. STAFF PHOTO / E. SKYLAR LITHERLAND After a spicy two-hour public hearing, commissioners voted 3-2 to accept a World War II veteran's donation of the 26-foot-tall "Unconditional Surrender" statue. The time was Post-Depression and the States had a huge need for the expansion of the money supply. Secondly, the dark clouds of war had started to gather, as Hitler took power. So the money supply had to be expanded, yet be capable of holding its value, when the global scene would have lead to simple un-backed paper money not being accepted. Gold however, was even accepted between enemies, as it would be today. What pushed government to take gold away from its citizens? It was seen as a time of national need. It was the need to reinforce the...

I was just watching Linda Douglass, Obama poodle, on FOX NEWS. She refused to answer whether BHO was going to promote TORT REFORM in his dog 'n pony show tonight...she merely said "Obama has talked about it a lot." blah blah blah So my question is: could Obama create "tort reform" this way: MAKE EVERY DOCTOR A DEFACTO EMPLOYEE OF THE GOVERNMENT. THE GOVERNMENT CANNOT BE SUED--SO NO LAWSUITS AGAINST DOCTORS WOULD BE PERMITTED. I know Obama and the libs are in bed with trial lawyers, so this may not happen...but it crossed my mind.

Jerusalem, Sept. 9, 2009 – The largest cache of rare coins ever found in a scientific excavation from the period of the Bar-Kokhba revolt of the Jews against the Romans has been discovered in a cave by researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Bar-Ilan University. The coins were discovered in three batches in a deep cavern located in a nature reserve in the Judean hills. The treasure includes gold, silver and bronze coins, as well as some pottery and weapons. The discovery was made in the framework of a comprehensive cave research and mapping project being carried out...

Former White House aide Van Jones, who resigned at midnight Saturday night on Labor Day weekend, explained in his resignation letter, "On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me. They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide….But…I cannot in good conscience ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining my past. We need all hands on deck, fighting for the future."

Firefights in Matamoros Violence associated with organized crime and the drug trade continues throughout Mexico, with the number of homicides so far this year reaching almost 5,000. For comparison, the 5,700 organized crime-related killings in 2008 made that year the deadliest yet in the country’s cartel war. With nearly four months left in 2009, it is all but inevitable that 2009 will be another record year for violence. One particularly noteworthy incident from this past week occurred on the afternoon of Sept. 4 in Matamoros, Tamaulipas state, just across the border from Brownsville, Texas. The incident began after Mexican authorities...

WASHINGTON-- When it's time to relax, some senators play golf. Others pour themselves a drink. But Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, isn't inclined toward the greens and his faith preaches against alcohol. Instead, he's spent time on and off for the last seven years building a defense of the Book of Mormon, one of the key tomes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The three-term senator whose job puts him at the center of political power has now delved into a different debate: whether the book Mormons believe was revealed by an angel to their founder Joseph Smith...

Tommy Christopher is a columnist and White House/media reporter for Mediaite.com, proprietor of DailyDose.us and Asylum's resident gonzo journalist. As with any endeavor, covering White House press briefings comes with its own set of specific challenges, pitfalls and fauxs pas. In the event that any of you ever find yourselves working in the Brady Briefing Room, I feel it is my duty to enumerate some of these. Recently I was, again, frustrated in my attempt to track down the president's poker preferences, but I did manage to commit two such gaffes. Rather than hang my head in shame, I prefer...

Here is video of House Democrat Rep. John Conyers flatly saying he will not support any Health Care Bill without a "Public Option." Conyers says he wants a "single-payer" system (euphemism for Total Government Take Over of Health Care), but he will compromise and take a "Public Option." Conyers was talking to Ed Schultz and went even further. Conyers cites the "math" in the House, and bluntly says Obama "cannot get to 218 in the House without a "Public Option." . . . (VIDEO)

In every fascistic society the government eventually resorts to the vilification of its own citizenry — that's the schoolboy lesson from 20th century Italy, Soviet Russia, and of course, the Third Reich. So what are we to make of Democratic leaders who use ugly stereotypes to revile opponents of healthcare reform as "un-American," "Ku Klux Klan folks," and "rabid right-wing extremists"? And what of President Obama's August 6 admonition, "I don't want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking."? Apparently he was referring to Republicans, conveniently ignoring the fact that the bloated Medicare and Medicaid...

Dear Senator Diaz, Thank you for asking me to participate in the New York State Senate Aging Committee’s hearing regarding H.R. 3200, “America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009.” You and I share a commitment to ensuring that our health care system is not “reformed” at the expense of America’s senior citizens. I have been vocal in my opposition to Section 1233 of H.R.3200, entitled “Advance Care Planning Consultation.”[1] Proponents of the bill have described this section as an entirely voluntary provision that simply increases the information offered to Medicare recipients. That is misleading. The issue is the context in...

  • Paul: Medina Is a Friend, But That's Not an Endorsement (TX Gov Race)

There seems to be some confusion in the Debra Medina for governor campaign on the definition of "support." An earlier version of this story reported that Medina's campaign announced Wednesday that Rep. Ron Paul is backing her. The campaign plugged a letter written by Paul in which he calls Medina a "real defender of liberty." But I just got a call from Jesse Benton, who said he's media director for Paul's congressional reelection campaign and the political director to Paul's political action committee, Liberty PAC. He said the letter is not an endorsement for Medina's campaign at all. Paul has...

Vladimir Putin did not meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this week in Moscow, a spokesmen for the Russian prime minister said on Wednesday. Dimitri Peskov told Radio Moscow that Putin had been "busy that day following his pre-prepared schedule, which did not include a meeting with Netanyahu." Peskov, however, did not explicitly deny that a visit had taken place. Earlier Wednesday, a senior Jerusalem official had confirmed that Prime Minister Netanyahu visited Russia on Monday in order to discuss the Kremlin's arms deals with Iran and Syria, and the transfer of Russian military hardware to Hezbollah. Netanyahu's trip...

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States wants to enlist its 3.4 million Girl Scouts in the effort to combat hurricanes, pandemics, terror attacks and other disasters. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched a campaign Tuesday to entice the blue, brown and green-clad multitudes to be even more prepared, with the promise of a new patch if they pitch in. The young scouts will be able to emblazon their sashes or vests with the patch if they undergo the training which readies them for an emergency. "This new preparedness patch will increase citizen preparedness and enhance our country's readiness for...
