Last Tuesday in Seattle, Kris Maenz of Eugene joined thousands of protesters from throughout the world to protest against corporate dominance of the World Trade Organization and got shot in the butt. Maenz, the editor of the Earth First! Journal, says she was among about 50 protesters blocking an intersection to shut down the WTO conference. "With no warning at all," police began spraying large canisters of pepper spray into the non-violent crowd, most of whom were sitting down and posing no threat. "There were people laying there with their arms over their heads screaming," she says. The police then ...

By John C. Ensslin Denver Rocky Mountain News Staff Writer Time flies when you're living in a brick drain pipe. Jeffrey John Hubert kicks back in Bob Cote's office at the Step 13 homeless shelter. He silently recalls the time he's called the streets of Denver home. "About five years," Hubert says. "Jeff, I've got a picture of you up on the wall that was taken in 1984," Cote counters. "I don't know how long you've been out there before then."<P

Can America Survive After Clinton? Robert VannRox Commentary Blue Bay Media 12 December 1999 Our Future Battles - Will they ever end? I must honestly state that before us lies a long and tiresome road, of battles, and trials. It is an uphill battle against a very powerful and criminally strengthened enemy. For those of us who actually believe the words written on the United States Constitution, this is no exaggeration. I cannot predict the future. I won't even try. All that I can offer is the knowledge that corrupt and sinister criminal elements have wrested control of our government. ...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. This should be the best of times for Allegheny County Republicans, but it portends to be the worst of times for blacks in the GOP. When Jim Roddey ascended the stage at the Doubletree Hotel, triumphant in a close and hard-fought victory over Cyril Wecht, it was thought that a new day was dawning not only for Allegheny County government, but particularly for Republicans. Roddey was, after all, the Republican nominee, and his victory, in a county where registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans 550,000 to 250,000, was considered a significant milestone ...

] By John C. Ensslin Denver Rocky Mountain News Staff Writer Marty Bertrand wants to catch some of the Raiders-Broncos game on Monday night football before bedtime. So he wanders over to a bar with a big screen TV and peers through the window. That's the way he prefers it -- on the outside, looking in. On most cold nights, he is one of three to 16 people who live on a heating grate along the West 14th Avenue side of the Denver City and County building. Born in Wisconsin, Bertrand, 31, grew up in Colorado, where he has lived ...

On the acknowledgments page of Hillary’s Choice, author Gail Sheehy writes, "I am indebted to Betsey Wright for her trust and candor." Reading that line made me curious to know what the former Clinton aide thinks about Ms. Sheehy’s biography of the First Lady. My curiosity already had been piqued by quotations from her in the Sheehy book–some of which say precisely the opposite of what Ms. Wright has told me and other journalists about her long relationship with Bill and Hillary Clinton. Speaking from her home in Arkansas, Ms. Wright was characteristically blunt about the grateful author: "Her book ...

LONDON - Many new mothers return to work because they are too embarrassed to admit to colleagues that they would rather be housewives, a survey showed on Monday. The poll of 1,000 first-time mothers conducted in Britain by drug and healthcare group Johnson & Johnson showed that being a full-time mother is viewed as a "shameful indulgence". Of those surveyed, 71 percent felt is was socially frowned upon to choose to be a full-time mother and a third said they were too embarrassed to give up their jobs to look after their baby. Half said they thought celebrity parents like ...

White House to release reliability figures to discourage Y2K panic Source: Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) -- Lights go out. Computers crash. Flights are delayed, baggage is lost. ATMs run out of cash, cellular calls won't go through and cable TV is showing static. Sound like the nation's worst Y2K fears? In the increasingly complex world of technology, those disasters can occur individually all in a day's work -- whether or not that day is the upcoming New Year's. Concerned that any technical failure in the earliest hours of Jan. 1 will be blamed on the Year 2000 computer problem, the ...

Gassing up as Y2K precaution could cause temporary shortage nationally Steve Alexander / Star Tribune If more people than expected top off their car gas tanks as a Y2K precaution, a national gasoline shortage could occur the week before New Year's. Though authorities don't expect that to happen, a federal energy official conceded that estimates of consumer purchases are only guesses, and that higher-than-expected tank-topping could result in shortages. But such shortages might not touch Minnesota, where at least one refinery is gearing up for additional consumer gas purchases over Y2K. In an interview Friday, Dave Costello, an economist ...

A bombshell report charges the Board of Education with widespread criminal abuses -- including padding class rosters with the names of dead kids to scam millions of dollars in aid from taxpayers. Doctored records -- a violation of state and federal criminal laws -- were uncovered system-wide by the Moreland Act Commission in its nearly yearlong probe of the city school system, said sources who disclosed details of the report expected later this week. "This was like shooting fish in a barrel," one investigator told The Post. "Almost everywhere we looked, in all five boroughs, we found something." A series ...

N E W F I E L D, N.H., Dec. 10 — Diehard conservatives — the kind of people who will come out in the rain to see him speak on a Saturday morning nearly a year before the election — really like Republican presidential candidate Alan Keyes. Or at least they appreciate him. They like that he can name obscure foreign leaders, that he doesn’t wear tan suits, and that he can spin even a question about NASA into an impromptu sermon on spirituality.
