Freudian slip Don't lose Your head To gain a minute You need your head Your brains are in it. --an old Burma-Shave roadside ad, Pushme-Pullyou From an e-mail-- quoting a CNN story: Did anyone else catch the significant Freudian slip which Our Fearless Liar let fly today in discussing fears about the Chinese leasing the ports on either end of the Panama Canal? Here's a quote from a CNN story: "Some members of Congress are worried that China is positioning itself to take over the canal through a Hong Kong-based company, Hutchison-Whampoa Ltd., ...

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Officials in Los Angeles -- the nation's second largest school district -- will continue to advance failing students, saying tens of thousands would flunk next year if the practice was scrapped. About 350,000 students in the Los Angeles Unified School District -- or half the 711,000 total -- would be held back a grade next year if social promotion was dropped, district leaders said. The district determined the figures based on an analysis that included standardized test results. Also, slightly more than half of the district's students are not yet fluent in English, a major ...

High-tech system speeds gun tracing A database five years in the making will give authorities instant access to the history of weapons used in crimes. Computer checks kept thousands from guns By Chris Mondics INQUIRER WASHINGTON BUREAU WASHINGTON - Widening its war against illegal gun trafficking, the federal government yesterday announced the start of a new high-tech system that officials said would speed up the tracing of guns used in crimes. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) said the system, which was tested in Philadelphia and other cities, would give law enforcement instant access to computer ...

By Mark Egan WASHINGTON, (Reuters) - President Clinton Tuesday dismissed the notion that Chinese control of the Panama Canal could hurt national security once the United States cedes control at the end of the year. Hutchison Whampoa, a Hong Kong-based company with ties to Beijing, has won the right to control the ports at both ends of the canal, leading some to fear that the Chinese might abuse their effective control of the 51 mile long canal once the U.S. military pulls out of the area. "I think the Chinese will in fact be bending over backward to make ...

Money Limited for Family Planning WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Clinton has waived restrictions on federal money for family planning abroad, triggering a $15 million limit on aid to groups that advocate abortion rights overseas. Clinton promised Tuesday to try to wipe the restriction from future budgets, saying it has an unfair impact on what private, nongovernmental organizations can do within their own countries. ``I do not believe it is appropriate to limit foreign NGOs' use of their own money, or their ability to participate in the democratic process in their own countries,'' Clinton said. ``Thus, I will oppose inclusion of ...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Despite public criticism in Egypt of the U.S. investigation of EgyptAir 990's crash, FBI Director Louis J. Freeh says bureau agents are receiving good cooperation in Cairo. FBI agents have examined aircraft and personnel records in Egypt and participated in interviews there, Freeh told reporters Tuesday at FBI headquarters. "The cooperation has been very, very good." Although Egyptian government objections halted the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board's plan to turn over control of the probe to the FBI as a potential criminal case, Freeh raised no complaints about Egyptian investigators. "We have done quite a bit ...

DNC said to have known fund-raiser guest was PLA officer By Jerry Seper THE WASHINGTON TIMES When the Democratic National Committee welcomed Johnny Chung and a guest to a 1996 fund-raiser for President Clinton, the DNC knew the guest was not only a Chinese businesswoman but also a high-ranking officer in the People's Liberation Army. Federal law enforcement authorities told The Washington Times yesterday that DNC chairman and former Army 2nd lieutenant Donald L. Fowler, in a previously undisclosed conversation, even joked with Liu Chao-ying before the Los Angeles fund-raiser that as a lieutenant colonel herself and the daughter of ...

I know the vast knowledge and resourcefulness of the FReepers will be able to provide a vast collection of Clinton quotes from the past couple of years DENYING that China would control the canal. Please post them. Also, bombard your local papers with letters to the editor pointing out how Clinton LIED for years on this and now admits the truth...maybe for the first time in ...

Personalizing, Again, Fact of Homelessness The last time a bunch of homeless people staged a sleepover like this in a New York City park, no one had any idea what a powerful statement they were about to make. The year was 1988. The chosen camp site was City Hall Park, which back in those days was still considered a public park and not a gated suburban community or the private preserve of the temporary mayor of New York. <>That protest started the usual way, with a few fiery speeches from the advocates and a few heartfelt testimonials from the street. ...

A small amount of radioactive material was detected in a trash truck before it was unloaded last week at the Sunshine Canyon Landfill, officials said Tuesday. Two plastic bags were found Nov. 23 with diapers and sheets contaminated with Iodine-131 used in cancer therapy. Sanitation workers packaged the refuse into two 55-gallon drums, said Judith Wilson, director of the City's Bureau of Sanitation. "Due to the low radiation levels the radioactive material posed no risk or danger," Wilson said. "However, we are taking every precaution not to compromise or place public health and safety at risk." The sanitation bureau worked ...

"This is the first evidence of brain damage in Gulf War vets," said lead researcher James Fleckenstein of Dallas. "The patients are validated. They're not crazy, ...

Kosovo was about oil and nothing but oil, with maybe some uranium thrown in and a dash of "wag-the-dog." And you thought it was to save the poor Kosovar Albanians. Of all the ethnically "cleansed" peoples around the world, some numbering in the millions, the beneficent powers of NATO decided to draw the line with the Kosovar Albanians. About 2,000 of the ethnic Albanians had been reportedly killed by Serbs in the last several years, so it was time for the humanitarian guard to take action. No matter that about as many Serbs had been killed by the Albanians, and ...

One of the raps against President Clinton is that he is too dependent on opinion polls. It is a valid but curious complaint. We want a President who heeds the public, but we also want one who can look beyond current passions to ensure the long-term national interest. The Founding Fathers understood that the government had to be insulated to some extent from "the mob." That's why we have representative government, rather than government by popular referendum. But now Clinton's former pollster, Dick Morris, excitedly tells us the Internet is going to change all this. With the nation increasingly going ...

Web Co-Inventor Backs Licensing By Stephanie Nebehay GENEVA (Reuters) - The co-inventor of the World Wide Web says all Internet users should be licensed so surfers on the information highway are as accountable as drivers on the road. Robert Cailliau, who designed the Web with Briton Tim Berners-Lee in late 1990, says regulation of the Internet would also help trace illegal child pornography and racist sites. But in an interview with Reuters Television, the Belgian software scientist was adamant that the system must remain open and neutral -- free of heavy-handed rules governing content. Cailliau also said he expected a ...

Canadians 'at undue risk' of epidemics Disease watchdog ill-prepared to spot serious outbreak: auditor general Mark Kennedy The Ottawa Citizen Canadians are at risk of contracting potentially deadly ailments -- such as influenza, tuberculosis and illnesses from food-borne contaminants -- because the federal disease watchdog is falling down on the job, says Auditor General Denis Desautels. In his report released yesterday, Mr. Desautels warned that the federal government is ill-prepared to detect, prevent and control pandemics of communicable diseases. Furthermore, he concluded its shoddy monitoring system "compromises" the government's ability to compile an accurate picture of how many Canadians are ...

The Los Angeles Police Commission narrowly recommended Tuesday banning the sale of live ammunition within the city. The 3-2 vote on what would be one of the most sweeping bans in the country sends the issue to the City Council's Public Safety Committee. The measure allows the sale of ammunition only to active and retired peace officers and military personnel for official duties as well as at firing ranges where all the bullets would have to be consumed. Antique ammunition and blank ammunition also would be exempted under the provision. "It is broad-based," said Assistant City Attorney Henry Morris. The ...
