WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 - Settling a score, Louis J. Freeh, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation under President Bill Clinton and in the first six months of the Bush presidency, asserts in a new book that Richard A. Clarke, the former White House counterterrorism chief, was "basically a second-tier player" who had little access to power and was in no position to issue credible warnings in advance of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. "If he was rushing around the executive branch trying to make a case that we were in imminent danger of a...

How Will I Know? " Jesus answered and said, ’I thank You, Father . . . that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes’ " —Matthew 11:25 We do not grow into a spiritual relationship step by step— we either have a relationship or we do not. God does not continue to cleanse us more and more from sin— "But if we walk in the light," we are cleansed "from all sin" ( 1 John 1:7 ). It is a matter of obedience, and once we obey, the relationship is...

TEHRAN (AFX) - Washington is not in a position to go to war against Tehran and its pressure over the Islamic Republic's disputed nuclear programme is nothing more than 'intimidation', Iran's top nuclear negotiator said. 'There will not be a war ahead of us. The situation in America does not allow them to create new fronts,' Ali Larijani was quoted as saying by the student news agency ISNA. 'War with Iran is hard for them, so they want to intimidate us into committing suicide,' he added, referring to Western efforts to make Tehran abandon work on the sensitive nuclear fuel...

On Feb. 20, 1999, while Harriet Miers was managing the law firm of Locke Liddell from the firm's Dallas office, she contributed $415 to the law firm's political action committee. Federal Election Commission reports show that on May 19, 2000, Locke Liddell's PAC contributed $1,000 to Hillary Rodham Clinton's Senate Campaign Committee. For an unexplained reason, Harriet Miers listed herself as a "self-employed attorney," according to the FEC Report on her 1999 contribution to the Locke Liddell PAC. FEC records also show a $500 contribution on Feb. 15, 2000 by the Locke Liddell PAC to Democrat Nicholas Lampson, who ran...

SENECA FALLS, N.Y. - Inspired by Alan Shepard, the first American to journey into space, a 14-year-old from suburban Chicago wrote a letter to NASA in 1961 asking what she needed to do to become an astronaut. She got a curt reply: Girls are not being recruited by the nation's space program. "It had never crossed my mind up until that point that there might be doors closed to me simply because I was a girl," recalled the letter writer, better known today as Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, as she was enshrined Saturday in the National Women's Hall of Fame,...

My mom has been in the hospital with a respiratory infection for almost a week, and we learned today that doctors have found cancer. We don't know what type at this point (I don't believe it's at all related to the infection), or how serious it is, but the news was devastating. In addition, she has to battle this respiratory illness, which has been bad. I'm praying constantly, as are the rest of my family. Cancer has killed two of my aunts and my grandfather, and this news hits everyone in my family hard. Relatives are coming to visit from...

Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol predicted on Sunday that there will be at least one and perhaps several indictments of "senior [Bush] administration officials" by Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald, who is investigating the outing of CIA employee Valerie Plame. "Criminal defense lawyers I've spoken to who are friendly to the administration are very worried that there will be one or more indictments in the next three weeks of senior administration officials," the influential editor told "Fox News Sunday." "Just looking at what Fitzgerald is doing and taking him at his word as a serious prosecutor here," Kristol said, "and I...

Militants' training camps wiped out By Rahul Bedi in New Delhi (Filed: 10/10/2005) Training camps used by jihadists battling with the Indian army for control of Kashmir were buried by landslides or left in ruins by the earthquake, bringing hope of a new opportunity for peace-making after a 16-year Islamic insurgency. India and Pakistan, nuclear rivals who both lay claim to Kashmir in its entirety, have fought two of their three wars over the territory. Security analysts said yesterday that the earthquake in Pakistan's highly-militarised Kashmir region had "significantly depreciated'' the insurgents' capacity to carry on their fight for independence...

An oversupply in housing that has been troubling other southeast Michigan communities has hit Washtenaw County in full force. The result has been stagnant home values for the past two years. There's also evidence that values may be depreciating slightly as competition forces down prices. Experts say the poor Michigan economy, coupled with a flood of new houses, has created the strong buyer's market. "The inventory is greater than Ann Arbor really has ever seen,'' said Elizabeth Brien, a leading agent with the Charles Reinhart Co., a real estate firm dealing with properties throughout Washtenaw County. "And I think it's...

Waterskiing on a six-foot stepladder is no different than riding a bike: Even after 10 years, Wicklund said, he still has the knack ...and the balance. He hadn’t put the ladder in the water for years because the ladder he used to use was no longer fit for duty, and because he didn’t have a boat driver he trusted enough to drive for him. But this summer Wicklund decided to try the ladder trick once again, this time with his son behind the wheel of the boat and with a new oak ladder he’d crafted himself beneath his feet. “I...
