Coming to Grips With Nation’s Phony Fears By Ida L. Walters Put aside your fears about “road rage,” co-workers “going postal,” Internet addiction or flesh-eating bacteria. You are more likely to be struck by lightning — 55 times more likely in the case of flesh-eating bacteria. These fears and many more are covered and debunked in Culture of Fear: Why Americans Are Afraid of the Wrong Things, by Barry Glassner, a professor of sociology at the University of California and author of six previous books. After reading Culture of Fear, your hype detector should kick in whenever a reporter ...

MOSCOW, Jul 7, 1999 -- (Reuters) Syria and Russia said on Tuesday the election of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak provided a chance for "constructive efforts" on the road to Middle East peace. A joint communiqué released by the Kremlin after Syrian President Hafez al Assad and Russian President Boris Yeltsin met in Moscow said they believed the results of the Israeli election "open specific opportunities for constructive efforts towards a comprehensive and just peace in the region". Assad was in Moscow on a two-day visit, his first since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. He left ...

Was there a town in America without its Fourth of July musical and fireworks extravaganza this year, the final Independence Day of the 20th century? In countless communities, pyrotechnics extended to the block level. Otherwise placid neighbors at either end of their street near here strove to out-spend, out-explode the other in their harmless annual exhibition of arrested adolescence. Was there a square foot of this land that didn't contain the morning-after charred remnant of a blasted firecracker or spent Roman candle? The tonnage of junk food converted into cubic feet of "bad" cholesterol would defy the capacity of NASA ...

Check this out---while researching the phenomena of third-party candidates in recent Presidential elections, I came across this website. The motto of the WFA: "World Peace through World Law." It seems that Anderson has finally become president of something, though it must be small solace to such a disillusioned man.

The Human Fly - a daredevil parachutist who captured the triple crown of skydiving by jumping from New York's three most famous skyscrapers - has died in a last leap from a foggy mountain in his native Norway. Thor Alex Kappfjell, 32, who jumped off more than 210 mountains and buildings, lost his direction in the fog Monday night and crashed into the mountain while making a 3,000-foot jump into a fjord, police said. He fell the rest of the way. His mangled body - with his open parachute - was found yesterday. "The world has lost one of ...

July 6, 1999 Thank you for contacting me regarding recent gun legislation in Congress. It is extremely valuable to know your views and concerns and I appreciate you taking the time to contact me. In the wake of the recent school violence, the Clinton Administration and many in Congress have been clamoring for further gun control legislation; therein, using the recent tragedies to advance their own political agenda. The causes of this problem have nothing to do with restricting the Second Amendment rights of law abiding citizens, which is what gun control proponents such as Senator Charles Schumer (NY) seek ...

TWO former Chiefs of the Defence Staff and two senior British commanders involved in the Bosnia conflict are supporting calls for an independent inquiry into the Nato bombing of Yugoslavia. Field Marshal Lord Bramall, Chief of Staff 1982-85, and Lord Craig of Radley, Chief of Staff 1988-91, have backed the Conservative Party in seeking a review of the effectiveness of the military operation. Colonel Bob Stewart, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment in Bosnia 1991-93, and Lieutenant-General Sir Roderick Cordy-Simpson, the United Nations Chief of Staff in Bosnia 1992-93, have also supported the demand for an investigation. ...

A 3 Billion Dollar Bond issue for University and state Community College system (the largest in our History) has been passed by the Democrats in NC State Senate. The General ASsembly will vote this week on the status of this bill. The Democrats have stated the the ISSUE IS TO COMPLEX FOR THE PEOPLE TO VOTE ON!!!!!! This would double the states' debt, and allows the Government to put us in more debt without consulting the people.(they know it wouldn't pass if put to a vote, by the way, all such issues have throughout NC history been voted on!) If ...

Clintons' Long Con The Clintons are at it again, this time playing politics with the budget surplus and health care-the president with his unrealistic Medicare proposals and Hillary (a/k/a "the savior of New York" and ever the opportunist), coming on as the loyal opposition in the White House inner sanctum. Has everyone forgotten that it was the Clintons who got the nation into this mess to begin with by trumpeting the so-called savings to be had from com petition in the managed-care industry? Their lack of judgment on health insurance led to higher rates, a worsening system of regulation, and ...

Hello, I spent the last two days reading material written by the Institute for Creation Research. Of particular interest to me was the book titled The Grand Canyon: Monument to Catastrophe. The authors of this book attempt to prove that the Grand Canyon is a young geological feature, less than 10,000 years old. According to the authors, the tilted strata of the Grand Canyon preceded Noah's flood. All of the level strata above the Great Uncomformity was deposited during the flood. Following the flood, the uplift of the plateau occurred and the canyon was carved in a short time. Following ...

How Do U.N. Policies Impact American Citizens? Abortion The United Nations is one of the leading exporters of abortion to third world countries. However, it is often under the defense of "family planning," "reproductive services," and "women's rights." In fact, the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) was instrumental in shaping China's brutal one child policy, which includes forced abortions, sterilizations, IUDs and the otherwise coercive treatment of women. "China's view is that reproductive rights belong to the state; reproductive rights are not something for an individual or even a family to possess," said an official at of the ...

Office space in midtown Manhattan has been rented. The first formal papers have been filed. A Washington office for an all-but-declared candidate answers its phones. And First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton heads to New York looking a lot like a candidate for the U.S. Senate. But what if the Senate doesn't turn out to be her cup of tea? Mrs. Clinton's cause-oriented, take-charge style may not mesh with the collegial atmosphere of the Senate and the detail- oriented, constituent services - from expediting passports to tracking down benefit checks - senators are expected to perform. Such a mismatch could mean ...

$558m lure for expat scientistsSTORY: BEIJING: China will spend 600 million yuan (HK$558 million) over the next three years on grants to lure overseas Chinese scientists to help its modernisation drive. The program, which Xinhua News Agency said was China's largest ever government-funded recruitment scheme, aimed to draw 300 overseas Chinese scientists to conduct research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The scientists would be given research grants of two million yuan to work on China's US$602 million (HK$4.70 billion) National Innovation System scheme to promote science and technology to support economic development, Xinhua said. Candidates would be required to ...

[last paragraph of editorial]... The electrical emergency should ease today with an expected shift in the winds. Temperatures in the high 80's with lower humidity levels were being described by forecasters as a "relief." Still, the city's discomfort offered an unpleasant reminder that if the globe continues to warm, a warning that looms beyond this week's heat emergencies, these heat waves may become more common. For now it is sobering enough to think that it is still only the first full week of July.
