WASHINGTON -- One Senate. Two Clintons. It is a concept so novel, so alarming, attention must be paid. Jeffrey Toobin caused a kerfuffle when he wrote in The New Yorker this week that Bill Clinton was interested in running for the Senate from Arkansas in 2002. If Mr. Clinton won in his home state and Mrs. Clinton won in somebody else's home state, they would make history as the first connubial Senate team. When the President called the story "crazy," I knew it could be true. As Hal Bruno, formerly of ABC, said of the Clinton crowd: "You're dealing with ...

Gun Control Delay Decried By LAURIE KELLMAN Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - President Clinton and some Democrats on Wednesday accused Republicans of trying to kill Senate-passed gun controls by putting off negotiations on the issue until mid-July. ``We've learned what delay means to gun bills,'' said D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton. ``The goal of the (GOP) leadership is not delay; the goal of the leadership is to defeat the bill.'' House Speaker Dennis Hastert had told reporters June 24 he would name negotiators this week to iron out differences in the House and Senate bills. But Republican leaders decided ...

Some Brewers Start to Employ An In-Your-Mug Approach By RONALD ALSOP Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL Make it a Bud Leather? In a repeat appearance, Bud Light will be the national sponsor of San Francisco's annual Folsom Street Fair, billed as "the world's biggest leather event." Local sponsors of the gay fair, to be held in September, include the Steamworks Bathhouse and Daddy's leather bar. To publicize last year's event, Anheuser-Busch Cos. Even created an ad showing a bottle of Bud Light decked out in studded black leather straps and topped with a black leather cap. The brewer ...

Beginning tomorrow, Florida will have in effect a real gun control law. Unlike those that try to punish law-abiding citizens, this one will punish criminals. If a criminal displays a gun during a crime, he will go to prison for 10 years. If a criminal fires a gun during a crime, he will go to prison for 20 years. If a criminal injures someone with a gun during a crime, he will go to prison for 25 years or until he dies. Even a criminal can understand the simple message Florida is sending: Don't use a gun. Ted Hires ...

WASHINGTON — Republican George W. Bush said he raised about $36.3 million for his presidential campaign in the six-month period ending Wednesday, nearly triple the record and about twice as much as Democratic front-runner Al Gore. "I am gratified and humbled,'' Bush said as he campaigned in California. "It's clear a great number of people have confidence in our vision for the future of America.'' Bush's unprecedented campaign war chest reinforces his position as runaway front-runner for his party's 2000 presidential nomination. And it strengthens his hand against Vice President Gore, whom he has beaten by double-digit margins in ...

MUGGER (excerpt) NY Press Last weekÕs LA Weekly (a Village Voice-owned alternative paper) ran an interview with Germaine Greer, conducted by Barbara Ehrenreich, and the portions devoted to Hillary Clinton arenÕt pretty. And remember, Greer and Ehrenreich arenÕt to be confused with Tom DeLay and Bob Barr. Greer isnÕt a Hillary fan, saying, "She shares a bed with the head of state, maybe, sometime. And, so what? SheÕs an attorney. Big deal. There are women attorneys all over this country. She gets a job of huge importance..." Ehrenreich then asks, "You mean health reform?" Greer: "Mm-hmm, and screws it up. ...

Jewish World Review June 30, 1999/ 16 Tamuz 5759 Marianne M. Jennings http://www.jewishworldreview.com -- LISTENING TO OUR BOY PRESIDENT and his court jesters on guns is similar to hearing a teen describe I Know What You Did Last Summer. Guns wander aimlessly on the cul-de-sacs of upper middle class suburbs and mercilessly seize control of the minds of young people faster than Austin Powers. Gun show guns pack more power for conquering the will and reason than a gun purchased with a waiting period at, say, K-Mart. Mrs. Clinton warned children last month that if they visited a friend's house ...

The good news: The Clinton administration has boosted its projection of federal surpluses over the next 15 years to $5.94 trillion - a 22 percent increase over February's estimate. The bad news: That good news, billed as "amazing" by the president Monday, perpetuates the illusion that Social Security and Medicare can thrive indefinitely without serious structural reforms. Before celebrating the alleged extinction of Washington red ink, ponder some nagging realties: More than $5.2 trillion of that $5.94 trillion projected 15-year surplus comes from Social Security, which shouldn't be part of the federal budget in the first place. (President Clinton, ...

Newspeak by Sunni Maravillosa Ayn Rand was right when she repeatedly pointed out that words have precise meanings. While it is true that many words have more than one meaning, a good wordsmith will make the intended meaning clear by context and careful use of words. Words are the tools of communication, and, just like any other tool, they can be wielded skillfully or ineptly, used properly or twisted to fit the purpose of the writer. Today’s climate of political correctness provides an excellent example of twisting words into new meanings—welcome, Orwellian Newspeak! Such obfuscatory use of language is not ...

KAMENICA, Yugoslavia, Jun 30, 1999 -- (Agence France Presse) Russian troops escorted by US and other NATO-led troops on Tuesday drove from Pristina to Kamenica where they are expected to set up a base within the US sector of Kosovo. The escorting US officers said the Russians, traveling aboard two armored personnel carriers, were looking at half a dozen places in Kamenica to set up a headquarters. The group of soldiers was seen by AFP heading for the former Serb police headquarters in the ethnically mixed town of Kamenica, southeast of the capital Pristina and northeast of US military ...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A tax cut plan of more than $1 trillion championed by top House Republicans is far too large for some in the GOP and for most Democrats, giving it little chance of becoming law. But momentum is growing throughout Congress for some tax cuts as surplus estimates keep rising. Moderate House Republicans told Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., at a lunch Wednesday that they oppose using improving budget surplus projections to add to the $778 billion, 10-year tax cut already envisioned by the GOP's budget blueprint. ``We already have a very large tax cut,'' said Rep. Michael ...

In response to a request on the "What do Freepers Do" threads, I’ve accumulated key phrases from the various posters pertaining to occupations and education achievements. I tried to put the information in categories to make it easier to find experts or other Freepers in a similar profession/occupation. Now I need your help to clean it up. I haven’t even read it through once since the reorganization, so it is liable to have a bunch of errors. Please do not be offended by my misclassifications or errors. It was prepared in a hurry, and I didn’t attempt to rank or ...

U.S. worsened Kosovo situation SHERIDAN, Wyo. (AP) - The United States and NATO not only fell short of their goals in Kosovo but made the situation worse, Senators Craig Thomas and Mike Enzi said. The senators, both R-Wyo., were in Sheridan on Friday. Enzi became the second Wyoming native to receive a Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts, while Thomas attended a Wyoming Mining Association Convention luncheon. "Our kids and grandkids will probably spend the next 25 years (in Kosovo) trying to keep the peace," Enzi said. Thomas, in a separate interview, said the conflict over Kosovo weakened ...
