There'd be golf, his Little Rock library and those memoirs "It seems like yesterday when we were all young and beginning and everything was new. And it passes in the flash of an eye. And when it's over, what remains is the feeling that you have been human and alive to the needs and aspirations of other people." President Bill Clinton, 1999 He is starting to sound like Wistful Willie. Having cleaned up the Balkans, balanced the budget and survived Monica Lewinsky, President Clinton has begun to confront the really big question of his remaining term: What does a ...

Would it be possible to program a complaint thread to run every so often along with the latest posts? [say every 20/40 posts?] Heres my reasoning.... We have only two choices now when we read a post that offends us... By responding we only bump the poster & promote flaming... By not replying the poster/author is encouraged by those few who do appove.. The present 'abuse' button is to drastic for me.. I very rarely see anything that deserves censure, and of course, thats what is happening now, marginal articles are being 'pulled' because of abuse complaints and/or flaming [?] ...

The American Lenin by L. Neil Smith          It's harder and harder these days to tell a liberal from a conservative -- given the former category's increasingly blatant hostility toward the First Amendment, and the latter's prissy new disdain for the Second Amendment -- but it's still easy to tell a liberal from a libertarian.          Just ask about either Amendment.          If what you get back is a spirited defense of the ideas of this country's Founding Fathers, what you've got is a libertarian. By shameful default, libertarians have become America's last and only reliable stewards of the Bill of Rights. ...

Celerino Castillo, the DEA Man Who Worked Too Well In the 1980s , Celerino Castillo III was one of the DEA's top agents, coordinating major busts in New York, Peru and Guatemala. But when he got to El Salvador at the height of the Contra War and reported that US agents under the control of Oliver North's NSC operation were running drugs, his superiors informed him that if he persisted he would be run out of town. "I was told my career would end because I was stepping on a White House operation," Castillo told us in the late summer ...

http://www.sacbee.com/voices/national/buckley/buckley_19990623.html By William Buckley Published June 23, 1999 The ongoing linguistic turmoil is over the term "compassionate conservatism." CC has taken hold as the designation chosen by Texas governor George W. Bush to characterize his campaign for president and, if elected, his tenure as president. FDR chose New Deal, Truman, Fair Deal, neither of which word-assemblies told us very much, but compassionate conservatism seeks to make moral and political points. Gov. Bush has stuck by the formulation and told Americans, in his Iowa declaration two weeks ago, that he would be guided by the lights of the concept. Two voices ...

1990627 character and y2k 1990627 character and y2k By xBob While my professional job titiles are in petro-chem construction procurement, I have been programming computers for nearly 20 years, both micro's and mainframes, to support various aspects of the work. Many people do not understand that y2k, in many cases is not a date problem at all, but a "character" problem, and by "character", I mean such as on a typewriter, on a printed page, not on a calculator or computer. What many people think are computer programs are data files and are text files, just like a newspaper ...

A Falsehood Wrapped in a Lie A Falsehood Wrapped in a Lie by George W. Maschke 27 June 1999 Question: ...And, finally, sir, you mentioned the spying in the 1980s, or the alleged spying in the 1980s. Can you assure the American people that under your watch, no valuable nuclear secrets were lost? Clinton: ...Now, you asked me...can I tell you that there has been no espionage at the labs since I have been President. I can tell you that no one has reported to me that they suspect such a thing has occurred. --President Bill Clinton Press ...

Chinese Police Begin Targetting Intellectuals HONG KONG, June 27 (AFP) - Chinese police have begun detaining artists and writers and accusing them of endangering state security, a Hong Kong-based human rights organization said Sunday. Beijing painter Yan Zhengxue and two Shanghai writers, Jiang Tanwen and Li Xunrong were detained on June 19 in Hangzhou and remain in custody under suspicion of "endangering state security," the Information Center of Human Rights and Democratic Movement in China said. "This shows that the central authorities have enlarged the scope of their oppression of dissidents to intellectuals," the center said. The three were detained ...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. ST. LOUIS (AP) - An industry-wide shortage of truck drivers has prompted one St. Louis-based company to search for workers in the Caribbean island nation of Barbados. Hogan Transports Inc. is hiring 75 to 100 Barbadians from the former British colony to drive its big rigs. ``We obviously were looking to our back yard and still are, but look at the unemployment numbers,'' Hogan said, referring to Missouri's low jobless rate, which, at about 3 percent, is below the nation's 29-year-low of 4.2 percent. ``We look at this as an ...

Should The U.S. Impose Limits On Incredibly Stupid sh*t? American Focus WASHINGTON, DC--With national stupid-sh*t consumption at an all-time high and federal sh*t projections indicating sharply rising levels of stupidity over the next decade and a half, a small but vocal group of lobbyists has revived an old debate on Capitol Hill, calling for strict, federally mandated limits on incredibly stupid sh*t. Though every previous congressional effort to curb incredibly stupid sh*t has met with failure, the sheer size of the current U.S. sh*t industry, combined with the unmitigated stupidity of ...

Feminists and fundamentalists share an active fantasy life 06/27/99 Last week, I made fun of the feminist intellectual Barbara Ehrenreich for asserting that her arguments should be granted greater validity because of the intensity of her emotion. I think I might have called her an airhead. If not, I should have. Anyway, several of my female fans have since pointed out to me that by that standard many conservative males can be called airheads as well. They're right. Tom DeLay, for example. DeLay, the House Republican whip, recently issued a statement in which he speculated sarcastically on the motive behind ...

WebPosted Sun Jun 27 13:58:50 1999 PRISTINA - United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan says another humanitarian disaster is looming on the horizon unless Yugoslavia gets help to rebuild its electricity and water system. However, the United States and Britain have repeatedly said they will not give money to help rebuild Yugoslavia as long as President Slobodan Milosevic is in power. But in an interview with the BBC, Annan says NATO must be careful not to create another humanitarian disaster. "We have to make sure that the Serbs, who are in some ways victims of their own leadership, should ...

*** Signs of the Apocalypse *** TIM BELFORD I've never been a particularly suspicious sort. Mind you, I do avoid walking under ladders, and I've been known to toss a little spilt salt over my shoulder. I don't much trust black cats either. And I wouldn't for the life of me be the third on a match. But apart from that, I wouldn't say I'm suspicious. That's why I find it odd that lately I can't seem to shake a sense of impending doom. Maybe it's the approaching millennium. After all, the doom doctors are lining up to tell ...

From the Archives of Sharin Nowlige: MANKIND n. An animal so lost in rapturous contemplation of what HE thinks HE is, as to overlook what he indubitably ought to be. His Chief occupation is Extermination of other animals and His Own Species, which, however, multiplies with such insistent rapidity, as to infest the whole habitable earth. When the World was Young and Man was New And everything was pleasant, DISTINCTIONS, Nature never drew, 'Mongst Kings, Priest, and Peasant. We are now not that way at present, Save here in Our Republic fair, We still have that Old Regime, And truly ...

Yesterday Bill Clinton said that the ethnic Albanians anger was understandable. Today we find out what he meant.. The associated press today cited that Italian soldiers on Sunday had found the body of a dead Serbian woman in Belo Polje, a burning village being looted by ethnic Albanian. The woman's bruised and bleeding mother said that her daughter had been raped and killed by ethnic Albanians in uniform. I am waiting for Bill Clinton to make his statement again, or at least be called to task on this point.
