The Government Has Our Numbers by Lori Patel 4:00am 3.Jul.98.PDT Your banker has it. Your employer has it. Your insurer, the IRS, and, frankly, you can't remember who else has it. So what difference does it make if the US Department of Transportation joins the crowd asking to see your Social Security number? Recently, the department published its intention to require all states to verify Social Security numbers before issuing or renewing drivers' licenses. Depending on who one asks, the significance of this decision can swell or shrink like a top-notch special effect. "Fear of crime and terrorism has ...

He leads the pack by breaking the mold By Jon Pepper / The Detroit News It's not terribly unusual that the early leader in the presidential campaign for the year 2000 launched his Michigan effort in a modest park in southwest Detroit. Nor was it surprising that the audience was composed largely of Hispanic business leaders and families, that the picnic fare was lemonade and tamales, and that the introductions were made in Spanish. The truly extraordinary part was this: The candidate was a Republican. That sort of unorthodox outreach to constituents well outside the traditional Republican party strength, however, ...

Your Driver License, For Sale? by Declan McCullagh 2:00 p.m. 25.Jun.99.PDT WASHINGTON -- Direct marketing firms are trying to head off federal legislation that would stop state governments from selling drivers license information and photos. A transportation funding bill that the Senate could vote on next week says that state motor vehicle agencies may no longer continue to offer their drivers license databases for sale to the highest bidder. Industry groups, including the Direct Marketing Association, Equifax, and some insurance companies oppose the measure. DMA lobbyists have been trying to sway their Capitol Hill adversaries by arguing that the ...

WILLKE, M.D. President BRADLEY MATTES Executive Director Dear Pro-Life Friend: . A batch of eyes going out by UPS. . A shipment of 30 livers by Federal Express. I can't believe this is happening - and routinely. These are real baby parts, often from live born babies who had been delivered by Partial-Birth abortion. I think it would be an understatement to say that I'm shell-shocked. I've been at the forefront of the pro-life battle for decades. Not much ...

June 25 1999 UNITED STATES Starr the inquisitor puts heat on Hillary FROM BEN MACINTYRE IN WASHINGTON KENNETH STARR, the independent prosecutor, has named Hillary Clinton on the witness list for the trial of her former legal partner in a move that is certain to cast a pall over her plans to run for the New York Senate seat. (Of Hillary's healthcare adventure) It is fortunate for the Clintons that this populist appeal was unsuccessful. Had the masses risen up against the insurance companies, they would have discoveed that the four largest of them___ Aetna, Prudential, Met Life and Cigna___ had helped and financed the "managed-competition" scheme which the Clintons and their Jackson Hole Group had put forward in the first place. These corporations and the Clintons, had also decided to exclude from consideration, any "single payer", or Canadian-style solution. A group of of doctors at the Harvard Medical School, better known as Physicians for National Health program, ...

A VIEW FROM HERE by deb weiss Guns, Cuisinarts and the Bill of Rights June 24, 1999 As the late Richard Milhous Nixon was fond of saying (actually, I think he only said it once, but once was enough), "Let me make one thing perfectly clear." I am terrified of guns. I mean terrified. Irrationally, intensely, deep-in-the-marrow afraid. The very smell of gunmetal sends chills down my spine. Some years ago, when my cousin, the adorable vegetarian and animal rights activist, who happens also to be an expert markswoman, invited me to wield her rifle (fully assembled, it's taller than ...

FOR AN IMMIGRANT without financial backers, campaign experience, or an established organization to provide support, Laura Onate Palacios of Montebello, California, has been surprisingly successful in her first political venture. Her crusade has caught the attention and ire of talk-radio listeners, and it has made its way into small-town newspapers, the Los Angeles Times, and the AP Wire. In a state that routinely confronts controversial issues—affirmative action, bilingual education, medical marijuana, etc.—via referendum, Mrs. Palacios has found one that cuts even deeper: adultery. A remarried divorcée and real-estate agent, Mrs. Palacios is tired of watching infidelity destroy lives and families. ...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A figure in the federal campaign fund-raising investigation pleaded guilty Friday to mail fraud, tax evasion and assisting in an illegal $325,000 contribution to the Democratic Party using funds from a foreign national. Appearing in federal court in San Francisco, Yogesh Gandhi, 50, of Walnut Creek, Calif., also admitted that he obtained a corporate American Express card by signing the name of a business associate to the application without his permission. In doing so, Gandhi used the associate's credit rating to obtain a card, the Justice Department said. The mail fraud charge relates to the American Express ...

The SWISS PERSPECTIVE Here is a real world perspective on why having the means to defend oneself is critical to maintaining our freedom now and into the future. ---------------------------------------------------------- The Swiss federal shooting festival, which remains the largest rifle competition in the world, was held in Luzerne in June 1939. Hitler's takeover of Austria and Czechoslovakia was complete, both countries had been surrendered by tiny political elites who guaranteed that there would be no resistance. Swiss President Philipp Etter spoke at the festival, stressing that something far more serious than sport was the purpose of their activity. His comments demonstrated ...

United States Senate United States Senate WASHINGTON, DC 20510 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, Jan. 25, 1999 Statement by U.S. Senators Jon Kyl, Pete Domenici, and Frank Murkowski We are increasingly concerned that bipartison efforts by Congress to implement the recommendations of President Clinton's Foreign intelligence Advisory Board regarding the security and management of our national weapons laboratories are being politicized and resisted by the Department of Energy at the expense of nationa1 security We can find no substantive explanation for the steadfast opposition of the Energy Secretary to these reforms; indeed, such opposition appears to validate ...

DUKE UNIVERSITY FRESHMAN Jay Strader first knew there was something wrong when he returned home after class. Vandals had broken into his dorm room and left an ominous message on his computer monitor—"We’re going to kick your ass." Soon after this jarring event, Strader was shooting pool with a friend in the dorm’s recreation lounge when a dormmate noticed him. "That was a real ass— of a letter you wrote," the young man snarled, referring to a letter Strader had recently written to the Chronicle, Duke’s student-run daily newspaper. The two exchanged words and insults, and the conversation became increasingly ...

It is becoming harder by the day to justify NATO’s continued collaboration with the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). A front page article in the June 25 New York Times cites KLA commanders, former Albanian government officials, and Western diplomats who claim KLA leader Hashim Thaci and two of his lieutenants led purges of the KLA ranks, to root out and kill potential challengers to Thaci’s leadership. No one has come forward to say they witnessed Thaci or his associates, Azem Syla and Xhavit Haliti, personally carrying out the killings, though reports to this effect have circulated for years. Moreover, there ...

The polling organization Harris Black International has kicked off what the firm is billing as the first-ever statistically accurate online presidential poll. With a total database of 20,000 volunteer Web-savvy voters at their disposal, the pollsters conducted the first of a planned monthly series of polls on the 2000 presidential race this week, said Humphrey Taylor, president of Harris Black. The poll of 12,868 U.S. adults showed that if the election were held this week, either Texas Gov. George W. Bush or fellow GOP candidate Elizabeth Dole would easily defeat either Vice President Al Gore or his rival for ...
