DETROIT(AP)--Improving education and reducing poverty go hand-in-hand, Texas Gov George W. Bush said in a call for unity and a bid for Hispanic support.Campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination in Detroit's Mexicantown, Bush cited his proposals for charter schools and school vouchers in Texas as an example of how high education standards and accountability can work."If they aren't learning, we ought to blow the whistle on failure," he said. "It's important to free parents to make choices."Bush arrived to the sound of Mexican folk music as he waded through about 300 people packed in a small park in a predominatly ...

The only way for public to win is to form a counter lobby Now that Congress has failed to pass even puny new gun laws in the wake of the Columbine tragedy, the instinct of citizens who favor reasonable gun regulations will be to point fingers. We will blame the politicians. We will blame the National Rifle Association. We will blame the media. It is time we blamed ourselves. A recent Gallup Poll showed 79 percent support for the mandatory registration of all firearms, up from 60 percent in 1980. According to the Pew Research Center, 65 percent of the ...

WILL U.S. MATCH WORDS WITH DEEDS? NEW DELHI, JUNE 24. While there is growing Indian appreciation of the American decision to step up the pressure on Pakistan to vacate its aggression in Kargil, the government would like to see the Clinton Administration match its words with deeds. As the government gets ready to be briefed first hand about the latest American mission to Pakistan, India would want to know whether the Clinton Administration is prepared to add some bite to its bark against Pakistan on Kargil. All accounts from Washington and Islamabad suggest that General Anthony Zinni, the C-in-C ...

A great deal of the gun control debate could be eliminated if some members of the media and our government would take the time to educate themselves before speaking. For instance, a reporter on television said that the National Instant Check System was not available on the weekends. Therefore, gun shows were excluded from its use. The NICS performs an instantaneous background check on the potential buyer of any firearm. If that buyer has a criminal record, he will be immediately declined. In all probability, this reporter was quoting a statement found in an article from a news service. ...

There are reasonable arguments against the use of school vouchers, but voucher opponents in Florida seem determined not to employ them. For example, one can argue the possibility that vouchers would lead to unwarranted government control of public schools that accept vouchers. Instead, opponents are fixated on the notion that all public funds for education automatically become the property of government schools. Thus, they conclude that freeing low-income students from failing schools ''robs'' the schools. Government schools get money based on the number of students they undertake to educate. Schools with fewer students get less money. Obviously, a school ...

North Korea, our most irrational, unpredictable and dangerous enemy - with whom we've been in an on-again, off-again shootout for 54 years - is back on the warpath. If the million-man North Korean army attacks, our 37,000 soldiers in South Korea will be little more than a speed bump without immediate U.S. air, naval and ground reinforcements. They'll be squashed like a beer can flattened by an Abrams tank - just as our troops were in the summer of 1950, the last time this Red horde roared south. Meanwhile, Saddam Hussein continues his war games in the Gulf, designed to ...

Christians trying to destroy this nation I'd like to praise Walt Williams, Washington County OCA (Oregon Citizens Alliance) director, for his impassioned defense of Christian hatred, fear, intolerance, persecution, and religious freedom ("Vote 'yes' on OCA initiative in November," June 30). Many Christians still claim their religion is one of peace, love, and forgiveness. How refreshing was Mr. Williams' honesty in admitting that religious persecution is Christianity's true goal with their anti-homosexual political activity. To quote Mr Williams: "The homosexual agenda allows religious beliefs; people just cannot exercise them. Making homosexuality a minority, a Jewish delicatessen owner observing Kosher law ...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. The new President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, has called for a new world order responsive to the needs of the poor. In his maiden speech to the South African parliament, Mr Mbeki said South Africa would play a more assertive role in African affairs, and contribute towards the resolution of conflict. "We cannot accept that war, violent conflict and rapine [plunder] are a permanent condition of existence for us as Africans," he said. "We will make our due contribution to the construction of a new world order that will ...

John, I'm thoroughly chagrined about having to post this publicly, but I don't have your personal e-mail address. Is the "data missing" message I'm getting every time I press my "back" arrow something new? This never used to happen. I imagine it's part of the (excellent) new changes but it's really annoying that I get a "data missing" ("expired cache"-type message) page each time I post a message, then try hitting my "back" arrow to get back to where I came from.I know I can get there by paging up (or down) to "latest posts" or "latest articles", but this is ...
