June 18, 1999 Boris goes Beavis-bonkers It's easy to understand Moscow -- the dudes just want to be cool By STEPHEN LAUTENS Calgary Sun If it's not one thing with the Russians, it's something else. Just when they seem to be coming along, taking their place as a responsible world power -- kaboom! Moscow starts acting crazy again. President Boris Yeltsin has been sent back to the shop so many times, they must be running out of spare parts. When he's not firing his cabinet, he's more wobbly on his feet than the United Alternative. And the moment he starts ...

Deep Throat's stenographer, Bob Woodward, has written another book about scandals--laced with the usual purported statements from scores of unnamed sources. And The Washington Post ran excerpts on its front page for three days--which has generated considerable interest among political and media elites. I recall, however, that when Gary Aldrich's book, "Unlimited Access," hit the bookstores, the mainstream media all but ignored his shocking accounts of high-level misconduct. Instead, they questioned the unnamed sources of some of his information.Tremendous latitude was granted Mr. Woodward when he wrote a book in which he recounted wide-ranging discussions with former CIA Director William ...

For fair use Clinton Blocks Move of Embassy to Jerusalem By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS OLOGNE, Germany -- President Clinton blocked plans Friday to relocate the American Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, a move the White House said would upset the Middle East peace effort. Congress initially passed legislation requiring the move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 1995, but it has never taken effect. "At a time when there is real potential for movement on the peace process, and as we look forward to the start of those crucial negotiations, the United States should not be taking steps of its ...

Family may lose cottage over support for gay rights 6.09 p.m. ET (2209 GMT) June 18, 1999 By Evelyne Girardet, Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — When the Grahams bought a cottage at a Methodist campground in suburban Chicago, they found an idyllic setting to spend their summers and celebrate their faith. But five years later, Nannette and Bill Graham face eviction after their 16-year-old daughter, Amelia, posted signs in the cottage's windows supporting gay friends the Chicago family claims were being discriminated against by the campground. Trustees at the Historic United Methodist Campground notified the Grahams that they want them ...

TOKYO--Like a long-running soap opera or a low-budget samurai movie series, the plot of North Korea's negotiations with the outside world never varies. The excitement comes with the wondering when the forces of the United States will call Pyongyang's bluff and retaliate. But it never happens. Japan's recurring nightmare, on the other hand, is that it awakes to find U.S. planes engaged in air strikes against North Korea. Despite provocation, Japan has lobbied backstairs for years against any sort of use of force in retaliation against North Korean acts. Possible China involvement, complications within Japan's huge Korean minority, possible unleashing ...

Recently the New York Republican Party Sent Hillary Clinton a tour book for New York City and (according to press reports) a sarcastic letter of welcome. Now, I am sure the "moderates" who control the New York Republican Party got a big laugh out of this asinine prank and congratulated each other on what they define as being clever; but if this low brow tactic is a measure of the campaign to come then we might as well anoint Hillary Senator for life right now. I have this awful feeling that such media approved non issues as Hillary's residency problem ...

Top News Sports Lotteries International National Washington Business Wall Street Entertainment Health/Science Regional U.S., Russia Sign Kosovo Peace Plan HELSINKI, Finland (AP) -- U.S. and Russian negotiators signed an agreement today on Kosovo peacekeeping arrangements, ending an impasse that began a week ago when 200 Russian troops surprised NATO by rolling into the Pristina airport ahead of the alliance. Defense Secretary William Cohen said Russia and the United States had reached an agreement ``on terms that meet the requirements of both NATO and Russia.'' ``It preserves the unity of (NATO) command ... and it gives Russia a unique role ...

Sen. Hutchison Replies Saturday, June 19, 1999; Page A18 While officeholders in Washington are often accused of being out of touch, evidently the condition is catching and The Post has got it ["Boss Kay Bailey Hutchison," editorial, June 13]. I'm confident that most of The Post's readers would agree with me that a 15 percent raise for part-time city council members, which would increase their annual salary to $92,000, is at least worth questioning. By comparison with surrounding jurisdictions, the proposed pay raise is high. Fairfax County, with twice the District's population, pays its supervisors half of what their ...

Want to make the announcement that the San Antonio Spurs just defeated Hillary's Knicks in the NBA Chamionship Series to lead Hillary's Knicks two games to none. Two more wins by the Spurs and Hillary's beloved Knicks will go down in flames. Nothing against the Knicks, their real fans, and the city of New York, but anything that Hillary is for I am against including sports teams. Wonder if she will attend a White House ceremony honoring the Spurs beating her Knicks especially since the Spurs come from Texas, home of George W.

SHOOTING BLIND Press coverage of the "assault weapon" controversy suggests that most jounalists know very little about guns and are not interested in learning. By William R. Tonso In a September 1988 report on "assault weapons" that he prepared for the Education Fund to End Handgun Violence, gun control advocate Josh Sugarmann candidly observed: "The weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi -automatic assault weapons anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these ...

CHINESE MILITARY DELEGATION VISITS RUSSIAN TOPOL ICBM BASE On 12 June 1999, a high-ranking Chinese military delegation visited a Russian Topol (SS-25) Intercontinental-range Ballistic Missile (ICBM) unit in Novosibirsk in central Russia. Moscow's ITAR-TASS, the main government information agency, commented on the significance of the visit by noting: For the first time in the history of Russian-Chinese military cooperation, a delegation of top representatives of the People's Liberation Army [PLA] of China has visited a unit of Russia's Strategic Rocket Forces in the last years…. The Chinese delegation reportedly was shown the Topol missile "and explained its possibilities in ...

Heard Senator Hugh Webster (R-Caswell) very much enjoyed and was impressed by his visit with Freepers in Raleigh, NC a couple of weeks ago. Webster was the only member of the General Assembly to vote against the bureaucrat-scripted budget railroaded through Thursday. Senator Hugh actually accepted an invitation and appeared on Black Entertainment Television to answer hostile questions after printing bumper stickers that said "Can't Feed 'Em, Don't Breed 'Em." Freepers can make a big difference by helping Hugh remain your only voice in the General Assembly. Drop him a note of support --- Hughw@ms.ncga.state.nc.us

DJAKOVICA, Yugoslavia — Yet another group of miserable civilians may soon be streaming out of the wretched killing fields of Kosovo. This time it is the Roma, or Gypsies, who are being blamed by the province's surviving ethnic Albanians for siding with their Serbian oppressors. The beginnings of a backlash against the Roma have been taking shape here over the past two days, ever since ethnic Albanian guerrillas began pouring into town in the wake of occupying NATO troops. The guerrillas, members of the Kosovo Liberation Army, have been conducting weapons searches in the two tiny Roma neighborhoods of ...

(Washington, D.C.): Wednesday's edition of the Los Angeles Times provided fresh evidence that Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson is not up to his job, any more than his department is up to that of maintaining the U.S. nuclear arsenal and safeguarding its secrets. Despite a critical report from a bipartisan House Select Committee, chaired by Rep. Chris Cox (R-CA)(1), and an even-more-scathing study by the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, chaired by former Senator Warren Rudman (R-NH)(2), the Times reported that Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson said, "I want to see evidence of [ongoing] nuclear security problems." Secretary Richardson's comments ...

Paris, Saturday, June 19, 1999India and Pakistan Won't Go to WarBy Gerald Segal International Herald TribuneLONDON - Listen to the high-flown rhetoric from Indian and Pakistani leaders or read the hyperbolic warnings of commentators and you would think that the two countries are on the brink of war in Kashmir. But a wider look at the India-Pakistan relationship gives a different perspective. The hype about the risks of war has some obvious sources. Foremost is the clear effort by powerful elements in the Pakistani political and military system to undermine Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Ever since his election, and ...

Paris, Saturday, June 19, 1999Calling Milosevic's Bluff in a Round of Poker DiplomacyBy David Spanier International Herald TribuneLONDON - The Russian move to seize the airport at Pristina was like the sudden advance of a pawn at chess. It was swift, it came as a surprise, it was planned. Though the pawn in itself may not be significant, its strategic value is clear. As usual in diplomacy, the Kosovo crisis shows how the American instinct is to play poker while the Russians rely on chess. It may be noted, first of all, that President Slobodan Milosevic is not a ...
