NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art: this is The Bible in Paintings, not "Great Paintings" nor even "Good Paintings." Indeed, occasionally photographs illustrate the text. So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don't need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby's. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm always asking the Holy Spirit to guide.
A r t
Q u a l i t yOften, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.
The Protestant Canon does not (for several reasons) follow a strictly chronological sequence. There are many examples where, for God's good purposes, stories are told out-of-order. Nevertheless, for the sake of simplicity, clarity, and my sanity, I have chosen to proceed linearly and methodically from Genesis onward, illustrating each Bible passage as we come to it. Where two passages cover the same incident I omit the second telling, excepting the four Gospels which I will treat synoptically. Now, onward!
T e x t
S e q u e n c i n gThe pace here may seem appallingly snail-like to those eager to see their favorite events illustrated. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence: if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic (but where there is little or no art, that Bible passage goes untold here).
P a c i n g Then, there is the human element: this is not actually a daily series, because I can only research, compose, edit and post five or six of these installments weekly. And because I only get to do this series once, I'm taking my time, chiefly by posting everything; if I find lots of art, I don't cherry-pick some and discard the rest. Rather, I line up all of them and then sort them into manageable bunches, often resulting in multiple days' episodes of the same story. Obviously, I like being thorough. Were you in a big hurry?
The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing—this is His project, after all. And always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness & self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!. .
Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so I'm just having fun here—I hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.Hebrews 11:6

Image #4, is Jonah wearing only one sandal as he is expelled from the Great Fish?
Maybe I’m overthinking it, but I’m reminded of Joshua...
Now this ambergris is a very curious substance, and so important as an article of commerce, that in 1791 a certain Nantucket-born Captain Coffin was examined at the bar of the English House of Commons on that subject. For at that time, and indeed until a comparatively late day, the precise origin of ambergris remained, like amber itself, a problem to the learned. Though the word ambergris is but the French compound for grey amber, yet the two substances are quite distinct. For amber, though at times found on the sea-coast, is also dug up in some far inland soils, whereas ambergris is never found except upon the sea. Besides, amber is a hard, transparent, brittle, odorless substance, used for mouth-pieces to pipes, for beads and ornaments; but ambergris is soft, waxy, and so highly fragrant and spicy, that it is largely used in perfumery, in pastiles, precious candles, hair-powders, and pomatum. The Turks use it in cooking, and also carry it to Mecca, for the same purpose that frankincense is carried to St. Peter’s in Rome. Some wine merchants drop a few grains into claret, to flavor it.
Who would think, then, that such fine ladies and gentlemen should regale themselves with an essence found in the inglorious bowels of a sick whale! Yet so it is. By some, ambergris is supposed to be the cause, and by others the effect, of the dyspepsia in the whale. How to cure such a dyspepsia it were hard to say, unless by administering three or four boat loads of Brandreth’s pills, and then running out of harm’s way, as laborers do in blasting rocks.
I have forgotten to say that there were found in this ambergris, certain hard, round, bony plates, which at first Stubb thought might be sailors’ trowsers buttons; but it afterwards turned out that they were nothing, more than pieces of small squid bones embalmed in that manner.
Now that the incorruption of this most fragrant ambergris should be found in the heart of such decay; is this nothing? Bethink thee of that saying of St. Paul in Corinthians, about corruption and incorruption; how that we are sown in dishonor, but raised in glory. And likewise call to mind that saying of Paracelsus about what it is that maketh the best musk. Also forget not the strange fact that of all things of ill-savor, Cologne-water, in its rudimental manufacturing stages, is the worst.
And so, the Whale "vomited up Jonah onto dry land". Who would have thought that "Whale Vomit" could include something as sweet and fragrant as The Word of God to Nineveh, which brought about Repentance, Salvation, and Peace?
Your insight into Jonah's dishevelled post-ejection appearance has company. I've seen speculation that the effect of three days' partial immersion in the sea-critter's gastric juices so bleached and ravaged Jonah's skin, hair, etc., that his horrific appearance played a substantial role in the sudden universal conversion of the Ninehvites.
If ever I do another "Best Comments" edition of this series, your insightful connection as expressed here will certainly be among, if not leading, them. Author! Author!
Ambergris, artificially manufactured, formed the heart of an episode of the British TV series Endeavour.
A magnum opus in its own right. Thank you, Hebrews!
Dan
I once had a set of “essential oils” that included the scent of ambergris.
It smells like the sea, but in a GOOD way.
Thanks for that description—I’ve never had the pleasure.
There were 8 frangrances in the package, if I recall correctly:
Patchouli
Frankincense
Myrrh
Musk
Rosemary
Lavender
Rose,
and
Ambergris.
Ambergris was my favorite, but they were all very nice. This was YEARS before “Aromatherapy” was a thing.
I expect it’s a chick thing.
Joshua 5:15 "And the captain of the LORD'S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so." King James Version (KJV)
Shoe is singular. That always puzzled me, Moses had to take off both sandals.

Image #33 today and #53 yesterday hint at that.
That would be powerful testimony. 'you really don't want to...'
Well, two of those fragrances were included in the Magi’s gifts, and one assumes that they were male. LOL!
Male, certainly. Married?
The word is naal or naalah, translated as "sandals" by the NIV and slightly more often as plural by the NASB.
If they were, I feel sorry for their wives. Imagine your spouse taking off for a two-year journey chasing after some aerial phenomenon!
(Of course 2-3 years was the average for a whaling ship.)
They were wise men. Not married...
LOL.
Faced with this new reality, all the husbands and boyfriends now found it expedient to put out to sea for one week each month, ostensibly for fishing but really to escape.
