If you’re planning to buy some beef to throw on the grill over the next few weeks, expect to pay up to three times more than you did just a couple of years ago, when our domestic supply was plentiful due to a historic cattle selloff. Since 2021, ranchers have been coping with drought and record feed prices, which forced many of them to send their animals for slaughter earlier than usual. And while that led to a higher supply and steadier prices back then, now it is resulting in falling production, empty shelves, and a painful spike in prices at grocery stores.
According to industry sources familiar with the matter, we’re about to see the worst of meat shortages, and costs are about to explode for US consumers, who may have to trade their traditional steaks for cheaper alternatives for the rest of the year and into 2024.
Our domestic beef cow herd is currently at its smallest size since 1962. And now ranchers who fatten cattle have finally gained leverage in sales negotiations over the meatpackers that dominate the market. The US Department of Agriculture reports that tightening cattle supplies are expected to cause a significant year-over-year decrease in beef production, the first decline since 2015.

Just for the hits. They do it for the clicks. Make up some scare story. The blogosphere is just like the MSM. Constant doom and gloom. Most of it made up.
More steak will become hamburger.
Yeah, right. Come back after these “weeks” and show us where meat prices have “tripled”. Article is BS.
Whats the point of going keto? If the government made famine rolls around youre going to be losing plenty like it or not.

It might be one or the other or both, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that the point of the story is not BS.
Just yesterday I had a conversation with the farmer that I buy my beef from about this very topic. He is contacting all of his customers to let them know that the rail price of beef will be north of 4$/lb plus processing costs come butchering time next spring.
Feed costs are through the roof right now, and with the drought that we're experiencing here in Misery there isn't going to be an adequate supply of hay to get the herds through winter. My hayfields made 14 5'x5' round bales this time. Last year those same two fields made 34 bales, and that is roughly 2/3 of what I get in a "normal" year.
So much for Biden saving us $.18 for 4th of July this year, which was the lie of the summer of 2021.
Bkmk
Same here, I just started carnivore diet a month ago which I’d like Keto only NO carbs at all.
It’s $21.83 lb. for prime boneless ribeye at my local HEB.
The cost of all those cattle dying in recent huge barn fires?
Very dry here in MO so the cattle farmers haven’t been able to cut much hay. On years like this, they’ll sell a lot of their cattle in the Fall since they won’t have the hay to feed come Winter.
I still remember the stories from our older citizens on how FDR bought up millions of cattle and hogs, had them shot and buried. It was to get the price up as steak was the cheapest food available during the Depression of the 1930s.
And the Feds refused to give any of the shot beef to the starving public in that area. It had to be buried.
One old farmer warned the AG agent that it was a waste of food and “In ten years you will be back her begging for more beef!”
In Ten years that same Ag agent was begging those same farmers to increase beef production for the war effort.
He finally - finally! - went 3 steps too far. Called someone’s wife a very bad name. I hope he’s doing better , wherever he is.
If your account is true and accurate, that’s a better anecdote than this anonymous blog full of meat packaging ads.
As I said, I’m sure we’re going to see worse, in my tin-foiliest hours I think our government is trying to set a Pogrom upon us.
