A bizarre string of events is unfolding at the American Historical Association (AHA). Last week, AHA president James H. Sweet published a column in the organization’s magazine on the problem of “presentism” in academic historical writing. According to Sweet, an unsettling number of academic historians have allowed their political views in the present to shape and distort their interpretations of the past.
Sweet offered a gentle criticism of the New York Times’s 1619 Project as evidence of this pattern. Many historians embraced the 1619 Project for its political messages despite substantive flaws of fact and interpretation in its content. Sweet thus asked: “As journalism, the project is powerful and effective, but is it history?”
Within moments of his column appearing online, all hell broke loose on Twitter.
Also remember that the United States of America participated in the Atlantic Slave Trade from 1787 to 1805. Eighteen years. We are not the guilty ones.
Looks to me that those who want reparations for the slave trade in America should take it up with the British…
so much for 1619
They can take it up with the Queen of England.
History is a dying liberal arts subject. Enrollment is way down. For good reasons. The commies have taken over. The red guard element of the AHA wants history to be an unobstructed communist propaganda machine. The overreaction to the mild criticism of the pack of lies known as the 1619 project is proof positive.
Are there any people left with backbone?
My replay, “If you cannot accept historical facts, find another job. Disney World comes to mind. Have a good day.”
I have no use for any historians who stood by and kept their mouths clos d while priceless historical monuments we’re destroyed.
They’re no better than the Taliban.
No, this diversity/victim hood that is extremely SUBJECTIVE sociology based on heavily delusional controlled substances (Immature emotions) crap is taking a huge chunk away from Medical symposiums as well. I blame females driving this because that is who pushes this crap from sheer numbers alone (Largest voting bloc since 1980) because since the 2nd wave of feminism started the breakdowns have become worse as the years go by. Females are easily led by a small percentage of Marxists (Whom are male but in position of authority especially in the academic field/college campuses where they can’t make it in the “real world” without being ridiculed) and too many simps are too effeminate to stand against female “empowerment”. Females need to think a lot more clearly and critically (Against their Professors, not reason).
Yep, Tagline still applies where "historians" = "journalists".
“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
― George Orwell, 1984
The map explains something that is overlooked or forgotten. Most slaves were used to make money. And where was money to be made? Places that could grow and process sugar cane. Producing sugar was almost as good as finding Aztec/Inca gold.
What was to become the United States didn’t have the climate or soil to produce sugar cane so relatively few slaves ended up here.
mother gia is to blame...
I left the AHA years ago, after seeing their annual marxist displays. Leadership always pretended moderation but ever allowed the extremists.
Reap what you sow.
