A dear friend of mine with a failing heart entered hospice last fall and prepared a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) form. Later in February as his condition worsened he was moved to a nursing home and was to receive only palliative care to reduce pain and keep him comfortable. He contacted a respiratory infection and in spite of the DNR he received antibiotics which extended his life but with it brought severe pain and suffering before he passed away. His caregiver has told me she is filing a complaint about the doctor with the state licensing board.

if he has not done so, prepare other end-of-life forms that represent Jim’s wishes.

It is a huge mistake to put you wishes on a form as situation change and the form will be used against you to end your life prematurely. The better way is to designate someone who kniws his beliefs and will fulfill his wishes and stand by him.

Bed sores are a very serious issue.

A hospital that I worked in for years was close to being shut down due to what was deemed as negligence by State Investigators. In fact, it was an independent non profit, but was then absorbed into a giant corporate enterprise.

Wound Care Physicians came to rule that place. To be fair, there was no excuse for the poor care that the poor Patients received. The Nurse Managers were all terminated at once when the problem was revealed. All of the NPs and PAs were dismissed. That facility no longer accepted LPNs and the dozens who had worked there for decades even in some cases were all let go.

It is a very serious issue.
