A hospital that I worked in for years was close to being shut down due to what was deemed as negligence by State Investigators. In fact, it was an independent non profit, but was then absorbed into a giant corporate enterprise.
Wound Care Physicians came to rule that place. To be fair, there was no excuse for the poor care that the poor Patients received. The Nurse Managers were all terminated at once when the problem was revealed. All of the NPs and PAs were dismissed. That facility no longer accepted LPNs and the dozens who had worked there for decades even in some cases were all let go.
It is a very serious issue.
Yes, in addition to being extremely serious healthwise, they can be excrutiatingly painful. If not tended to properly, the sore can go all the way to the bone and cause inflammation and infection into the bones and then throughout the body (if I understand properly), medical people can correct if that last is wrong.
