Oh, heck yes! The EPA new vehicle gas mileage requirements were about to get extraordinarily silly.

“Transportation experts dispute the arguments. “

I’m a “transportation expert”....I’ve been driving since 1952 and I call BS!

Can’t fault the administration’s logic. I do have a beef, though, about large extended cab pick ups -and that’s when they park next to you in a small parking lot, especially at a gas station where there’s a lot of traffic. I have to back up into the traffic lane before I can see anything. I’m very careful, never been clipped, but I don’t like it. Personally, I think they should have separate parking areas for large vehicles.

One of the things pushing electric cars has been the Obama EPA requirement of a high MPG per manufacturer fleet.

This removes that push to electric vehicles.

Recently, not far from my house, a medium sized pickup truck had a blowout. It crossed the at normal speed and hit a Corolla also going normal speed. If it had hit any of my vehicles I’d have had a good chance of living. Both the occupants of the Corolla were killed instantly.

I have heard people the virtue of their gas sipping tiny cars. But, they never take into account what happens to those necessarily light vehicles and themselves in a collision. This is poor thinking on their part. Like anything, you have to take into account the whole cost of ownership and use. I am happy to pay the extra cost of gas for the additional safety of a bigger vehicle. It’s like insurance. You pay for it whether you use it of not. But, if you need it, it’s better to have it.

Transportation experts dispute the arguments

Apparently these so-called "experts" are unaware of a law that has been around for a long time - The Law of Physics.

Automotive engineer Giorgio Rizzoni of Ohio State University calls the administration’s safety claims “a stretch.”

Oh YEA?

Ok, lets take a 1995 Crown Vic and a new Toyota Corolla and hit them head on at 55mph in one of those crash tests and see what happens!

Actually, today's cars ARE a lot safer because the car is designed to sacrifice itself structurally to take most of the force of the accident. It's similar in principle to modern IndyCar or Formula 1 racer--remember all those parts of the racer flying away during impact dissipates the energy of the crash from being transmitted to the driver.

Really? Tell you what, Giorgio, how about I get in an F350, you get in a Smart Car and we'll both drive 40 mph and hit head on and see if it's a stretch.

My 2003 Dodge 1500 Hemi Ram Quad-Cab pickup never got better than about 10.2 miles per gallon gas mileage according to it’s computer, but it was pretty bad @ss.
