U.S. says no need for better gas mileage, heavy vehicles safer
The Washington Times ^ | Tuesday, July 31, 2018 | Tom Krisher and Ellen Knickmeyer - Ass Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is citing safety to justify freezing gas mileage requirements.

A draft of a regulation prepared this summer would freeze an Obama-era program that was intended to improve fuel efficiency and cut pollution.

In excerpts obtained by The Associated Press, the administration argues that heavier vehicles are safer than lighter ones and that people would drive more — and be exposed to increased risk — if their cars get better mileage.

Transportation experts dispute the arguments. Automotive engineer Giorgio Rizzoni of Ohio State University calls the administration’s safety claims “a stretch.”

The draft also shows the administration plans to challenge California’s long-standing authority to enact its own, tougher pollution and fuel standards

Oh, heck yes! The EPA new vehicle gas mileage requirements were about to get extraordinarily silly.

I’m a “transportation expert”....I’ve been driving since 1952 and I call BS!

Can’t fault the administration’s logic. I do have a beef, though, about large extended cab pick ups -and that’s when they park next to you in a small parking lot, especially at a gas station where there’s a lot of traffic. I have to back up into the traffic lane before I can see anything. I’m very careful, never been clipped, but I don’t like it. Personally, I think they should have separate parking areas for large vehicles.

Who no doubt has lived his life off of research grants given by Democrats.

I wouldn’t mind more miles for the gas we use. Could care less about the fake environment nonsense, but to pay less at the pump is good for everyone.

One of the things pushing electric cars has been the Obama EPA requirement of a high MPG per manufacturer fleet.

This removes that push to electric vehicles.

I have a wild idea, let people buy the cars they want.
Let the market decide. Weird concept, right?

As an owner of one of those extended cab pickups, I couldn't agree more! I park way out in the sticks in most parking lots, because people with small cars tend to squeeze their econo-boxes into tight spaces.

I was boxed in once to the point I had to squeeze into the back door and crawl into the driver seat to leave. Never parked in the front of that WalMart again.

I’ve driven those all my life. I could drive a Prius but it might suck to pull a trailer with a Bobcat on it.

Recently, not far from my house, a medium sized pickup truck had a blowout. It crossed the at normal speed and hit a Corolla also going normal speed. If it had hit any of my vehicles I’d have had a good chance of living. Both the occupants of the Corolla were killed instantly.

I have heard people the virtue of their gas sipping tiny cars. But, they never take into account what happens to those necessarily light vehicles and themselves in a collision. This is poor thinking on their part. Like anything, you have to take into account the whole cost of ownership and use. I am happy to pay the extra cost of gas for the additional safety of a bigger vehicle. It’s like insurance. You pay for it whether you use it of not. But, if you need it, it’s better to have it.

Apparently these so-called "experts" are unaware of a law that has been around for a long time - The Law of Physics.
