Hurricane Irma Live Thread
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/04/2017 2:02:19 PM PDT by NautiNurse

While thoughts and prayers are with our Texas FRiends and neighbors, we are at the peak of the Atlantic Tropical Storm season. Hurricane Irma continues its trek from Cape Verde across the pond and toward the Hebert Box (see below). People with interests in the Southeastern U.S. and Gulf of Mexico should be alert to the forecast path updates for this powerful storm. It is important to note that the average NHC track errors are about 175 and 225 statute miles at days 4 and 5, respectively.

Hurricane Irma originally had a small wind field. In the past 24 hours, however, the wind field has expanded with hurriance force winds up to 40 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds up to 140 miles from the storm center.

FL Governor Rick Scott reminds Floridians: Families should take time today to make sure you have a disaster plan and fully-stocked Disaster Supply Kit. Florida residents from West Palm Beach to Tampa Bay are heeding the alert. Store shelves are emptying of bottled water.

A friend of mine speculates that they will round up as many cats as they can and put them in the Hemingway house and close the door.

I hope to God that's not true. I can't believe they'd do something that cruel and stupid.

Yeah, we’re both on low carb diets, so mystery meat in a can will do us just fine. And we have an Olde Brooklyn LED lantern, and flashlights galore, including a 4 D cell Maglite that doubles as a nice, stout club, if called upon. I should have ordered military surplus jugs from Sportsman’s Guide when the thought popped into my head, but we’ll make do. As long as we can keep the fridge running, a table lamp or two, an oscillating fan, and the cell phones charged, we’ll be good to go. We’re not in a flood plain. If I got a real ornery hair stuck sideways, I could fire up the wood stove, take the burner plates off, and cook up a storm (pun semi-intended). And as long as there’s pressure in the water lines, I don’t mind taking a tepid shower so I don’t smell like a dead bear. If it gets really dicey, we’ll have plenty of food water, light, meds refilled, a little power, and communications for several days. Oh, and lots of ammo in case there are those who wish to do a little ‘window shopping’.

Actually the eyewall area is where most of the damage is caused from..depending on wind and strength how far out that goes....from what I understand.

Meanwhile...West is on fire as map depicts locations

I'm in Grand Junction and nowhere near these fires, and somewhat outside of the plume shown on the map. But even so, visibility is down to a couple of miles. Things a couple of blocks away are somewhat obscured in the haze.

Nearby Arcadia got hammered by Charley.

I live where Charley, Frances and Jeanne crossed paths in 2004. I saw plywood sliced into wooden phone poles 5 inches deep and the top of concrete power poles snapped like toothpicks.

And then there's Richard Branson. Looks like it's running straight over him.

Agree—the “green” BAM models were not reliable. This storm has brought out a lot of folks who usually could care less about hurricanes, and one happened to ask the question about BAM. Same person would get a kick out of ALL CAPS NHC Discussions by FORECASTER BEVIN.

I will eat my words and apologize to everyone if this hurricane doesn’t do just like Katrina. Those models are steadily going south & West. A front was supposed to turn it too.

I remember it all too well.
