Retired pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson has pulled to within 4 points of GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump, a new poll shows.
In the New York Times/CBS News survey released Tuesday, Trump maintains the lead of the presidential pack, with 27 percent support. But Carson is within striking distance, at 23 percent, which is within the margin of error, making it a statistical dead heat.Carson's rise compared with his polling at 6 percent support in the pre-Aug. 6 debate Times/CBS News survey; Trump was at 24 percent in that earlier poll, showing Carson's gains the most significant in that time frame, the poll shows.
Far behind the leaders were former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, all tied for third place with 6 percent.
Bush's support, however, has plummeted from the 13 percent he got in the August Times/CBS News survey while Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker finished with just 2 percent, down from his previous 10 percent support.
The declines in support for Bush and Walker were the largest in the survey, the poll shows.
In other findings: Carson drew more support from college graduates than Trump, while men, evangelical voters and those without a college education were more likely to favor Trump. Carson is the only candidate to whom Trump would lose a theoretical head-to-head matchup.
The poll's release comes a day before the second Republican presidential debate in California, where Trump will retain center-stage, but Carson will be afforded a bigger spotlight.

Go Ben, go!
I don’t think so
Carson could win Iowa. I don’t think he can win New Hampshire or South Carolina.
I could vote for Ben. I absolutely will not vote trump.
Why?
Carson will, in the long run, turn out to look a lot more like Romney then Cruz. I'm sticking to the good guys: Trump/Cruz.
Ridiculous....
I dont think so
Agree. It is BS.
Carson’s positions on most everything are no different than the GOPe. He’s not said anything that separates him from anyone else. These pollsters are trying to create a candidate.
This guy is not a dealmaker...no more nice guys! Hillary will run all over this guy
Ben has has seated himself right next to Jeb on the amnesty express train.
Somebody is trying a little too hard to put the best possible face on Carson’s chances.
Go where? Go to only allowing people who live in rural areas to own semi-automatic weapons? Go to allowing the legitimization of illegals and eventual citizenship if they meet some nebulous subjective criteria about not being “bad?”
“Carson drew more support from college graduates than Trump, while men, evangelical voters and those without a college education were more likely to favor Trump. Carson is the only candidate to whom Trump would lose a theoretical head-to-head matchup. “
The slobbering agenda is so obvious.
“If you arent some non-educated, stupid, Christian, white dude, then you need to get with Carson!”
And we already have people here ready to latch onto Carson as their last hope. LOL!
Have you seen some of Dr. Carson’s views? Scratch the surface of this one-issue candidate and he’s against everything we believe in.
Just wait until after the debate when the reports of a Carson, Fiorina and Kasich surge come out. The articles are already written.
NYT and SeeBS. Now there’s a pair for you. LOL! Propaganda queens.
Primary and general?
No Ben No!
Cruz...Trump if I have to.
No more being nice, it’s PAST time to kick dem, progressive, liberal, socialist, commie, muzzie butt!
The why is simple.
Carson is the last refuge for the people that are abandoning Bush, conservatives that dont like Trump, and the only person near Trump enough for the few supporters of the remaining candidates to latch onto and feel like they are backing someone that they think has a chance.
Yes I have and you are right. My personal belief is that he’s only being championed because he is the right’s black so-called conservative candidate. If he was white he wouldn’t even be on the slate.
