Retired pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson has pulled to within 4 points of GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump, a new poll shows.
In the New York Times/CBS News survey released Tuesday, Trump maintains the lead of the presidential pack, with 27 percent support. But Carson is within striking distance, at 23 percent, which is within the margin of error, making it a statistical dead heat.Carson's rise compared with his polling at 6 percent support in the pre-Aug. 6 debate Times/CBS News survey; Trump was at 24 percent in that earlier poll, showing Carson's gains the most significant in that time frame, the poll shows.
Far behind the leaders were former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, all tied for third place with 6 percent.
Bush's support, however, has plummeted from the 13 percent he got in the August Times/CBS News survey while Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker finished with just 2 percent, down from his previous 10 percent support.
The declines in support for Bush and Walker were the largest in the survey, the poll shows.
In other findings: Carson drew more support from college graduates than Trump, while men, evangelical voters and those without a college education were more likely to favor Trump. Carson is the only candidate to whom Trump would lose a theoretical head-to-head matchup.
The poll's release comes a day before the second Republican presidential debate in California, where Trump will retain center-stage, but Carson will be afforded a bigger spotlight.

I sure hope that you’re right, and I think that you probably are. After all, this is the NYT/CBS.
Shame on You for not realizing Carson is a GOPe shill!
A nonsense headline.
A 4% lead with a 6% margin of error translates into a probability of 77.8% chance of the leader winning.

‘This comment of yours destroys your credibility out of the gate.’
Overruled. Assumes facts not in evidence. (I.e.: that the party in question had credibility to begin with.)
LOL
There’s something very fishy going on here.
Is this pre-debate spin to unsettle Trump?
Are they trying to spot Carson support so the facts can catch up to their imaginary premise?
This just doesn’t pass the sniff test.
The vast majority of folks support Trump based on his immigration stance alone. Carson is now on record as being another Bush on the subject.
Now I’m supposed to believe Carson has nearly as much support as Trump?
For what?
I’ll bet very few folks could tell me one core issue he is sport on about, that would pull support from Trump. (or anyone)
;)
Comrade, Pravda has given you your poll. To think like this, to question the word of Pravda is dangerous.
Besides, to deny this black man his place at the top makes you a racists. You must welcome Carly also or you are a sexist. Are you a hateful, sexist bigot?
Trust the GOPe to do your thinking for you, and you will be none of these hateful things. Trust the media that feeds you the GOPe news.
Trump is counter revolutionary. Do you, comrade, want to be known as counter revolutionary? Have you no regard for your reputation? At least think of your job, your family....
Tired old Liberal ploy......repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat the falsehood until it’s accepted as fact. We haven’t seen the depths to which the media will sink in order to serve their masters. Trump must be put down by any means.
The very fact that Carson has become their darling of the day should make him suspect, but we wouldn’t have the imposter we have for a President today if the masses were smart enough to figure that out.
Of course, if Carson had zero or about one percent, then the Pubbies would be racists as well. But because Carson is almost neck and neck with Trump, Pubbies are racists. Try and figure out lib "logic"....I can't.
I agree, this does seem very fishy. I can understand Trump’s numbers, but Carson’s? Imho, Trump is the strongest candidate in the republican field, and the Left is terrified of him. As we’ve seen in the past, they will stop at nothing to win.
Listening to him now, or last year? Last month? Last week? His positions are a bit of a moving target, so I want to make sure I’m talking about the “right” Trump.
Ouch!
Well done!
O.K., let’s see if Carson can withstand more intense scrutiny as well as Trump.
At least. Look how many scream excuses for the pink nazis every time one of them really steps over the line.
BUT THEY AREN’T ALL THAT WAY!!!
And in every case I have t]seen that person gets cornered into admitting ‘friends or family’ that are flaming.
Look how many spazz out over hunting. Just the other day several were crying over the Txas pigeon shoot fundraiser
Look how many are anti fence.
It’s not hard to do the moderate math here. If not the full blown liberal math. But gee. I wonder why we can’t get conservatives with all these staunch right wing conservative stalwarts on board. Yup. It’s a mystery alright.
Not.
I hear ya. I will have to rethink everything...
BTW: I’m on the record against phlegm too. What does that make me?
I agree.
Carson is saying law-abiding folks can stay, but they get no govt assistance. If they continue with a “pristine” record they can stay. But as guest workers only. What their eventual status may, is open to national debate some time after the border is secured and things are regularized.
Trump says all the criminals have to leave, but those with a clean record who have work here can come right back.
The main difference between trump’s and Carson’s is that Carson’s is logistically-easier, and more likely to achieve a high level of adherence.
The guy lived his entire life, his entire career, as a liberal. Then, in 2011 he considers running for President as a Republican, and writes a book that lays out some quasi-conservative positions, and I’m supposed to believe it?? How gullible are you Trump fools?
And, for the record, I don’t know that “liberal” is the right way to describe Trump’s trade tariff policy (though noted Socialist Bernie Sanders agrees), but it’s certainly not conservative.
