(Update: Adding more on opposition to Core, where Duncan spoke)
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan told a group of state schools superintendents Friday that he found it fascinating that some of the opposition to the Common Core State Standards has come from white suburban moms who all of a sudden their child isnt as brilliant as they thought they were and their school isnt quite as good as they thought they were.
Yes, he really said that. But he has said similar things before. What, exactly, is he talking about?
In his cheerleading for the controversial Common Core State Standards which were approved by 45 states and the District of Columbia and are now being implemented across the country (though some states are reconsidering) Duncan has repeatedly noted that the standards and the standardized testing that goes along with them are more difficult than students in most states have confronted.
The Core was designed to elevate teaching and learning. Supporters say it does that; critics say it doesnt and that some of the standards, especially for young children, are not developmentally appropriate. Whichever side you fall on regarding the Cores academic value, there is no question that their implementation in many areas has been miserable so miserable that American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, a Core supporter, recently compared it to another particularly troubled rollout:
You think the Obamacare implementation is bad? The implementation of the Common Core is far worse.

Is there any other kind?
It may be hereditary.
How does “common core” work and how is it able to tell skin colour?
You can keep your common core Arne my kids are home schooled. They were in public school but I got tired of spending 4-5 hours every night teaching them. I would not have had to do that if you did your job that we pay you for in the first place.
Isn’t it amazing how the people surrounding this POTUS and the POTUS himself are all coming out with the most outrageous and Arrogant statements. They constantly are pissing off the very people that are keeping this country afloat. Arne Duncan is a gay, white male who is the head of the educational system,(might I say that sucks) and he disses the “white suburban mom”. Isn’t that who voted for this POTUS?
All I can say is it is in God’s hands. Pray more.
Well of course the Teachers’ union is opposed to standardized testing, because that would show actual results of their employees’ work.
Golly, then we might start talking about getting rid of bad teachers, and rewarding the good ones.
Apparently, children are “brilliant” until they spontaneously spout the Statist clichés and memes.
And the guy that brought you to D.C. , Arne? You were just one of the harbingers of his now nearly full blown idiocy.
Sounds like Common Core is trying to redistribute the inner-city pedagogy into every other school in the nation so that everyone can be equally illiterate, innumerate, and dependent on habits of non-thinking.
White mom’s disillusioned that their children aren’t proficient at re-imagined BS liberaldom’s version of history? Oh, the horror!
This testing and stardards and who is actually in charge with what gets taught and how can be shown by a recent example from our local paper in which some mom was commenting about a recent event with her child. Seems the child lied about attending a sleep over which sleep over turned into a mega party, police involvment and her kid getting arrested trying to flee the premises. Her plea was for more community sponsored events to keep her “amazing child” occupied.
Reminded me of my childhood. I once told my father I had nothing to do. He said good, I have something to keep you occupied, grab the broom. BTW, “her amazing child” would have had a sitting problem had that been my family but no such concern on her part. Rather, it was the fault of the parents at the home where the party was held because they did not keep proper control over it. Similarly with school, most “parents” don’t want to spend the time socializing their kids or educating them, they want someone else to do it. In such an atmosphere the schools become “lord of the flies” petry dishes and as history says, you get what you sow.
Yeah, those comments are so clearly racist that it boggles the mind. I mean he’s either saying ‘white suburban moms’ are too stupid to really know if their kids are being educated or not, or implying that non white suburban moms don’t really give a crap about their kids education.
Not a very flattering set of options.
One of the comments was so unbelievably stupid that I just have to say something. Some dude said that his dad told him that when parents are involved in education everything goes to pot.
Every teacher in the country (except those who are high) will tell you that parental involvement in education is critical to the success of the student. As an educator the most frustrating thing in the world is trying to convince the kids that it’s worth their time to apply themselves when the parents are just using the school as free childcare. The heartaches that good teachers are trying to impact are the kids whose parents expect the society to raise their kids for them. It doesn’t work, and anybody who has ever worked with kids knows that.
Some kids can get away from their crack-head parents during school, but the truth of the matter is that very, very few of those acorns will fall far from the tree. Teachers try, but the general principle of nature is that people stick with what they are comfortable with, what they are used to. That is why the tons of money poured into education hasn’t made a lick of difference. The problem in our schools is the apathy of the parents and the society that has created that apathy, and no matter how the schools try to become mommy and daddy for these kids they can’t do it.
What this guy says embodies that whole society. In his view the parents have a DUTY to stay out of their kids’ lives and let the powers of the wind take their children wherever the wind blows. The schools are failing because of people like him in a society that creates people like him - people who don’t know how to think and know and care even less about facts and evidence.
I wouldn’t think the suburban moms would even understand what is being said, so many being socialist types themselves.
Someone oughtta tell this jackass Duncan (who presided over a sub 50% graduation rate of the Chicago Public Schools) that "Common Core" isn't harder --- it's EASIER.
In fact, it's TOO EASY!!!! Common Core was dumbed down to make the INNER CITY kids look smarter than they are.
I have two sons in high school. My youngest (a freshman) is in five Honors Classes. He's getting A's in every single one. My oldest (a junior) is in three Honors classes this year and he's getting A's in two, a B+ in the third.
Frankly, I look at their homework and think what they're given in "honors" classes is far too easy. It looked like what I was getting in "non-honors" classes when I was in high school.
Tell me again Arne Duncan, you worthless Secretary of Education POC who RUINED Chicago Public Schools how "Common Core" is harder?
And this dumbass is the Secretary of Education? Proof the Democrats want to DUMB DOWN America to create generations of Democrat dependent voters IMO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good grief, is there a single democrat who is not a wanna be Nazi and racist @sshat at the same time?
Exactly correct, and that's what Duncan did to all the Chicago Pubic Schools ... dumbed them down to the same level of incompetence.
Thank God I don't live in Chicago or C(r)ook County!
