Despite a heavy period of news that included the Boston Marathon bombings and the Jodi Arias trial, MSNBC's second-quarter ratings plunged to their lowest level since 2007.
In primetime, MSNBC drew an average of 584,000 total viewers and 196,000 viewers in the key 25-54 age demographic. Those numbers were down 16% and 12%, respectively, from the second quarter of 2012. And they accounted for quarter lows not seen since the fourth and second quarters of 2007, respectively.
The network had seen signs of this coming in some dreadful monthly ratings, particularly in May. The same factors contributed to the network's ratings decline over the full quarter. "The Rachel Maddow Show" suffered its lowest-rated quarter in terms of total viewers since 2008. And June alone was the lowest rated month ever for Maddow in both total viewers and in the 25-54 group.
New host Chris Hayes continues to pull in sluggish ratings for "All In With Chris Hayes," which in its first full quarter on air provided MSNBC with the lowest-rated 8 p.m. hour in the 25-54 demographic since 2006.
It comes as a disappointment to a network that built much post-election hype while surging in the key 25-54 demographic immediately after President Barack Obama's re-election. BuzzFeed said MSNBC was poised to challenge Fox News, but that hasn't been the case.
Here's a look at the year-over-year plunge:

Fox News continues to remain at the top of the ratings among the cable networks, its 46th consecutive quarter there and 138th consecutive month. In total viewers, Fox News beat CNN and MSNBC combined in both total day and in primetime viewers, while surpassing both in the key 25-54 demographic.

Revelations AFTER the election of 0bama’s many scandals has people asking “WHERE WAS THE NEWS MEDIA?” A major hit to their credibility!
LOL. I wish Fox would dump Juan Williams. I guess they need their token liberal to keep some viewers. Watching him is like watching a train crash.
I got one year left
There are Derision targets on Fox. Their purpose is to have someone to catch the rocks being thrown. Juan is a primary target.
Viewers need a target for throwing rocks. Juan is a wonderful target. He touts the party line and is black. The only thing better is a JAP. They had one in Ellen Ratner but she quit.
It’s a dirty job but somebody has to do it!
Yeah, the ones who are gonna be stuck with the bills for social security, Obamacare, etc.
More MadCow Bell!
It’s like the LA Times...Who in hell still gets their news from a roll of waded up dirty paper thrown on their driveways?
Gezz..
Why not? Isn’t GE the ultimate parent company? They get HUGE tax write-offs from this Administration, to the tune of a $0 tax bill, so MSNBC is simply a loss-leader. No skin off anyone’s nose.
Or,,,,,
“Neurological
Venereal
Disease?”
Why do corporations waste their PR dollars on this worthless exhibit of media flatulence? It reflects poorly on any business that sponsors their anti-Americanism.
I had Fox on while I was having a snack and Dennis Kook spinach was on a panel with Juan. They were both defending 0 bummer care, even though the other members had CBO figures proving the opposite. I need to get a TV brick.
Meanwhile “The Fox Report with Shepard Smith” (1,814,000). Hehehe the lowest rated on the Fox programs mentioned. I hope his ratings are dropping. I know I turn him off immediately when I see that face of his.
When is Microsoft going to ask that its name not be tainted by MSNBC?
MSNBC - Much Stuff, Nothing But Crappy.
GE sold its NBC networks to Comcast last year. So, the cable giant is now stuck with the black hole that is called MSNBC. However, Comcast is a company has a reputation for watching the bottom line and cutting costs whenever possible. If MSNBC’s ratings continue to crater, they’ll dump the libtalk and create another national sports channel. Guaranteed to attract far more viewers—especially those in the demo—than MSNBC.
My guess is CNN’s numbers are actually lower; my bet is they count people sitting in airport boarding areas waiting for flights.
For reasons I’ll never understand, every airport has stupid CNN on...except Idaho Falls which often has FOX News in both boarding areas.
Any normal network would be in bankruptcy by now...
Good, I didn’t pick up on that. Thanks. I saw that earlier and it didn’t register. If it was yours, I’m sorry it didn’t sink in.
“Im sorry it didnt sink in.”
Nothing to be sorry about DO! As I mentioned, it was posted a lot. I think some may have been pulled. It was confusing.
