LOS ANGELES (AP) Protesters rallied in dozens of cities Saturday as part of a global protest against seed giant Monsanto and the genetically modified food it produces, organizers said.
Organizers said "March Against Monsanto" protests were held in 52 countries and 436 cities, including Los Angeles where demonstrators waved signs that read "Real Food 4 Real People" and "Label GMOs, It's Our Right to Know."
The U.S. Senate this week overwhelmingly rejected a bill that would allow states to require labeling of genetically modified foods.

Thank you, opentalk!
People need to be aware of all this.
How much money do you have invested with these jerk offs?
It has something to do with the difference between science and feelings.
I don't have any money invested with the unscientific idiots.
I don't have any in Monsanto, but I'm thinking of buying some.
Monsanto is not my/our friend. We should have the right to know what is in our food, where it came from, and whether it was genetically modified. Monsanto and Obama and the legislators it owns in both Parties do not want the public to have their food labeled and identified so that consumers are informed and with an open and free market.
I support the protesters. This country needs more protest and less acquiescence.
The corporatization of, and compromising the integrity of what should be honest and ethical government of the USA, by global (not USA) corporations wishing to destroy our national sovereignty to enhance their profits, is not now and never will be a conservative value. This represents one of the big threats to our republic.
What does genetically modified mean to you?
...see any names you recognize ??
They continue to spread patents to other foods, plants...
Administration, meanwhile, pushing concern about the environment...Michelle Obamas health initiatives
All the modifications done before Monsanto are okay?
-- There is a growing body of scientific evidence which proves that genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) are inherently different from natural organisms, including the way the body processes them, as well as how the immune system responds to them. But Monsanto, the largest purveyor of GMOs in the world, believes that GMOs are no different than natural organisms, and that GMO testing is both needless and valueless.

Why arent you running human clinical trials on GM crops?
Because existing food crops are recognized as safe, the logical starting point for safety assessment of a GM food is to ask whats different?
Aspects of the GM crop which are the same as the non-GM counterpart do not require safety assessment. Safety assessment can then be appropriately focused on what is different about the GM crop. All GM crops are analyzed and compared to non-GM counterparts in order to determine whether they have similar concentrations of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, amino acids, fiber, vitamins and a variety of other components. Two crops which are alike in all respects are said to be substantially equivalent.
How are they different? Besides your feeling?
including the way the body processes them
It's called digestion. It works differently on GMO? How?
All I want as a consumer is to have all the correct information to make an informed decision. When it comes to food I want it on the package.
When I go to a gas station and pay for 20 gallons of gas, we expect an accurate calibrated pump and the gasoline to be properly labeled with the correct octane.
When I go to a restaurant and order a drink I want it to be what was represented and what I ordered. Fox News had an article on NJ restaurants selling customers rubbing alcohol as top shelf booze.
We’re in an era of changing culture in America where ethics of people, politicians and business have moved to the back seat. Wall St and the Fed jacks the stock market up and down at their whim. I don’t trust Monsanto.
Surely you don’t oppose an honest and free market? By non-disclosure Monsanto obviously does.
That is excellent!
You should pay as much as it takes to eat only food that is non-GMO.
What is your definition of GMO?
Surely you dont oppose an honest and free market? By non-disclosure Monsanto obviously does.
Non-dislosure? I'm pretty sure they don't sell food to consumers. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Concerning the injection of foreign DNA into GM crops, Physicians and Scientists for Responsible Application of Science and Technology (PSRAST) have taken a more scientific approach by actually investigating how the body processes foreign DNA, which revealed that things are not as peachy as Monsanto claims they are. As can be expected, foreign DNA is not properly recognized by the body, and negatively stimulates the immune system in such a way as to cause disease-inducing inflammation
GMOs should be safety tested before they hit the market says AMA
... Studies in the scientific literature have suggested that genetic engineering could introduce new food allergens, increase the levels of known allergens, raise or lower nutrient levels and have adverse effects on the animals that eat such foods.
New study: Monsanto's toxins kill human kidney cells
A new study shows that low doses of Bt biopesticide CryA1b as well as the glyphosate herbicide, Roundup, kill human kidney cells. The Bt biopesticide conferring insect resistance and the glyphosate tolerance trait tied to the use of glyphosate herbicides account for almost all the GM crops grown worldwide
These studies, along with the observation that Bt protein is present in the blood of pregnant women and their babies makes it an urgent matter for the health impacts of Bt proteins in GMO crops to be thoroughly investigated along with the known effects on the environment and non-target species [that is, in us].

You Are What You Eat: Genetically Modified Foods Include Information
According to recent research from Chinas Nanjing University, when people eat rice, tiny sequences of microRNA from the plant-based food can survive the bodys digestive process and end up absorbed in human tissue where and heres the reason why we need to know about this study plant microRNA may actually affect how our cells behave and function. In the study,Exogenous plant MIR168a specifically targets mammalian LDLRAP1: evidence of cross-kingdom regulation by microRNA,published in the Journal Cell Research, the genetic material from rice showed up in human liver cells where it appeared to influence cells uptake of cholesterol from the blood.
Unless you have a deep, dark secret, I hope all your food has foreign, non-human, DNA.

OMG! We should stop eating plants immediately! And animals too, just to be safe.
New study confirms that GM food damages fertility
In a new Austrian study ....it has been discovered that GM corn has a damaging effect upon the reproductive system (1).
The work was done at the request of the Austrian Health Ministry, and the results were presented yesterday by Professor Jurgen Zentek and his team to an expert conference organized by the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety. The work was done at the University of Vienna, using a GM maize hybrid line called NK603 xMON810,which has two copies of the RR gene in it,each copy with its own, different promoter sequence,as well as the MON810 gene.
difference was statistically significant. Mice fed with GM-free corn reproduced more rapidly. In a series of carefully-controlled trials,it was also discovered that there was a statistically significant decrease in litter weight in the third and fourth litters of mice in the GM-fed group as compared to the control group.

Bill Gates is a major shareholder of Monsanto, Speaks publicly about population control.
My wife asked why I didn't just save the seed so I could replant it next year. I explained to her that the lettuce varieties I was growing are hybrids, which do not produce seeds true to type—you never know what you're going to get, and usually it's crap.
The lettuce I planted has been around for many decades now. Nobody complains about hybrids like they do about GMO. I do not think the plants “know” the difference.
All a GMO is an advanced way to breed a hybrid. Just because a person is scientifically stupid is no reason to protest a company going about its legal business.
