The purpose of this thread is to secure a commitment from each local Principal to provide an opt-out so that no one is forced to endure Obama's subtle, presumptuous speech. Below, I will provide a sample of reasonable letters we want the Principal to sign. If refused, we know where they stand and will take the appropriate action against them. I disagree. I despised a lot what is going in schools and indeed many public schools are going 1984 way. However, till now parents are still largely in control, students have, though slowly diminishing, access to various sources of information. Also, till now there was no overt, government-enforced indoctrination in schools.

Let's keep it that way and let's reverse the 1984 tendencies while we are at it.

I saw that one, too. Compelling politically innocent children to hero worship someone of such nonexistent accomplishments is downright nauseating.

Our understanding is that the address will be archived on the White House website for students and families to view at their convenience if they so desire. Therefore, schools should not alter their schedules so that each student may view the address, and teachers are not required to interrupt their lessons to show the broadcast.

There you go! That's the alternative EVERY school district should recognize. There's NO reason to interrupt the school day, which is FULL enough already, for a presidential speech.

When we sent my daughter to a public High School after attending private school we opted her out of the "Family Life" sex counseling week.

To punish her/us the libtard teachers made the students who opted out write a ten page research report (full Bib. and footnotes too) on some kind of health related subject. TEN pages in five days, fully researched, for a 9th grader!

For the first time in my family I made her find a subject, get some research pages from the web and then I sat down one evening and wrote her paper for her. It was hard to write at a 9th grade level but I made it and she was the only opt out student to get an A.

The rest of the class sat and got the liberal version of sex ed and had to do nothing.

Why are any conservative's children still in the public school system? I just placed a call to the private school that we have our youngest daughter in, and they told me that there was no way the President would have access to their kids during school hours. There should be a mass exodus immediately from the public schools across America. Let the left wing idiots give their kids a non-education, and let the free market determine whether our public or private schools prosper.

Doesn't it seem just a little bit counter productive to send little Johnny out of the door into the care of the primary Socialist brainwashing station in this country, whose only bent is to reshape him or her into an anti-Christian leftist, while we sit at the computer to rail against the destruction of America in this (and other) forums? We all made the choice to use a broken educational system with full knowledge of its statist roots because it cost us less to enroll our children there. The old adage, "You always reap what you sow, more than you sow, later than you sow." certainly applies here!

The problem I have with this opt out is the “branding” of the students and the parents.

Of course, if you pull your kid out she could still be branded.

I think my decision would be to pull the kid out if it is going to be shown rather than being ostracized in another room...but if you are talking about a teenager..then I think I would give them the choice. Then have a discussion about it.

This is going to create yet another racial divide in urban settings.

I have 3 public school aged children, I contacted each school and then the superintendents office to see if this propaganda would be shown in the system.
At first they said that they did not know, then they called me back and said that they would not be participating.

I will send my kids to school, with notes to excuse them from this. If they are forced to watch or they suffer any degradation for not being present if they do decide to show it there will be severe legal ramifications against the district.

I see, but PASS doesn't help all the students in the class only your student, lets agree to go further. Demand more but let parents propose a compromise if we can't nuke and nip it in the bud. Here is a modified proposed letter: Dear Doctor ______, Barack Obama has announced that he wishes to address all school students on September 8th, an historic first as no previous President ever demanded. The U.S. Department of Education sent out letters to School Principals nationwide. They have prepared "educational" program material to go along with this. Creepily and ominously the letter and the lesson plan material do NOT mention what the topic of the speech is to be. As one of the preparatory materials for teachers provided by the Department of Education, students had been asked to, “Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. Yet the lesson plans make clear that Obama demands -- for to say that a man in such an office "strongly desires" something carries to the force of a strict command from regular folk. Barack Obama thus demands that the students should agree with what he says, find that it is important and act upon it. After complaints of such obvious politicization of our schools, just yesterday White House Spokesman Tommy Vietor announced, “We changed it to clarify the language so the intent is clear.” Therefore it is reasonable to demand that the prior materials sent to you by the Government be destroyed and at the least teachers be instructed not to use the previously provided “lesson plans.” They have already admitted to one error involving this ill advised scheme among the other blatant errors and admissions in this “lesson plan.” My strong recommendation as a concerned citizen resident in this school district is that this school NOT participate in such an event, because the topic and subjects to be discussed are unknown. If Mr. Obama wishes to address this group of our community let it be NOT as some captive audience. No politician has the right to speak directly to our children while refusing to allow a discussion of opposing viewpoints. That is not how we do things in America. The children in a classroom or auditorium have no choice but to sit through such a speech. Nor is it wise or responsible for an adult in charge of such vulnerable young minds and spirits to allow anyone free access to them in a captive situation such as a classroom or auditorium without first reviewing and approving the lesson plan. A plan that MUST INCLUDE the subject to be discussed and what is to be discussed about it. It would be more appropriate to record such a speech and play it later after the subject matter had been determined. Our district, Cy-Fair ISD in Northwest Houston, says:

“There will be no alternative activities for students whose parents request that their child
not view the speech. However, an alternative location with supervision will be
provided.”

They made sure to reference “Not since 1989 when President George H. W. Bush made his address to students on
the dangers of using drugs has a president spoken directly to the nation’s students.”

Question: Was the GHW Bush address shown during classroom time?
