Just out of morbid curiosity, now that we have sketchy documentation from Hawaii (mostly unverified), and ostensibly false information attributed to Kenya, why do we simply accept the birthday of Aug 4th?
Seems if we want to deal in speculation, the more reasonable approach would be to construct whatever verified timeline exists, and work backwards to whatever birthday makes the best fit.

Is this it? (I would link it for you but I was accused of being a disruptor yesterday just because I provided a link for someone - go figure....)

By Jenny Neyman

Redoubt Reporter

On Tuesday, supporters of President-elect Barack Obama looked forward to watching him take the oath of office with a sense of excitement, pride and hope for the future. Mary Toutonghi, of Soldotna, was prepared for that and another sensation: Remembrance of the 44th president as a 7-month-old baby.

Toutonghi used to baby-sit President Obama when she was neighbors with his mother.

Toutonghi was living in Seattle at the time, in the early 1960s. Her husband was going to school at Seattle University, and she was a stay-at-home mom with their 18-month-old daughter.

They lived in a three-story house that had been converted into three inexpensive apartments. Toutonghi and her family lived in the basement apartment, and Ann Dunham — Obama’s mother — lived in the apartment directly upstairs.

Dunham attended night classes a few days a week at the University of Washington, and needed someone to take care of her son.

“The time was available and we were all struggling students. She needed a baby sitter and I said ‘Sure,’” Toutonghi said.

She watched Obama a few times a week, for about three hours at a time. Dunham paid her, but she doesn’t remember how much, Toutonghi said.

“I remember his being very large and very curious and very alert. I don’t remember him fussing, but that doesn’t mean anything. Saying he never fussed is like saying he’s not real. But I don’t remember any undue fussing at all,” she said.

Being a struggling young mother herself, in the tumultuous dawning of the 1960s, no less, Toutonghi said she doesn’t remember many specifics about Dunham.

“I was so engrossed in myself at the time,” she said.

But the circumstances of a young mother living, attending school and raising a baby alone stuck in Toutonghi’s mind.

“It was a tough situation, as far as I knew,” she said. “She was 19, she’d promised her parents that she was going to finish college, even through she’d married. I’m presuming her parents were paying for the schooling — nobody had any money at the time.”

Dunham met Barack Obama Sr., a foreign student from Nyang’oma Kogelo in Kenya, Africa, when she was a freshman at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. They married on Feb. 2, 1961, and Barack Obama II was born Aug. 4, 1961, when Dunham was 18.

Dunham left school to take care of the baby, and returned to Seattle while Obama Sr. finished college in Hawaii and left for graduate school at Harvard University.

“It was interesting, and I don’t know why she was going to school in Seattle and he was in Hawaii at the time. She had told me at one point that because of her husband’s post in the tribe he was going to have to go back to Kenya and marry a black woman, as well. It was a whole different world, so she was accepting of that and hoping she could get back to him soon,” Toutonghi said.

Later, Dunham moved back to Hawaii with her son and filed for divorce from Obama Sr. in 1964.

By that time, Toutonghi had long since moved on to the next chapter in her life. She baby-sat for Dunham for two months, then she and her husband bought a house in the Government Hill section of Seattle and moved there, before moving to Alaska in 1977. She had a long career as a speech pathologist. She’s retired from the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District and has a private clinic in Soldotna.

She didn’t have cause to think about her former charge until 2004, when she came across his first book, “Dreams from My Father.” Then she saw he was the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention in 2004.

“Since I found the book, ‘Dreams from My Father,’ when it was first published, then when I was working on the 2004 presidential campaign and realized he was the convention speaker, it blew me away. And then this,” she said.

“I keep thinking of the six degrees of separation, that thing. I’ve known some unusual people in my time, but this was different.”

Toutonghi said she went to school in California with Bob Hope’s kids.

“We were in the neighborhood, essentially. I was not one of the elite group members, by any means, but I remember getting an award once with he and Dorothy in the audience,” she said.

As famous-people stories go, that’s noteworthy. But nowhere near as much as having changed the future president’s diapers.

“It was just mind-boggling to me when he did that Democratic convention, and then was like, ‘Huh,’” she said.

Toutonghi said she often wondered what happened to Dunham, who became Ann Dunham Soetoro after a later marriage, and died of ovarian cancer in 1995.

“We talked, but I can’t say, if I had been really strong friends I would have kept up the relationship. It was interesting to me as I read that book, his first book, I was thinking of his mother, then finding out she had died I felt very badly. I had meant to try to contact her through the publisher, but I didn’t get around to it. It was one of those things,” she said.

Toutonghi said her daughter asked if she had voted for President Obama because she had once baby-sat him.

“I said no. I felt that he had a concern for people as a whole,” she said. “As I thought of the books and things I had read about him and what I knew of that period of time, I think he was very aware of ordinary people and people who were trying really hard to make it. His mother definitely had spoke in terms of concern for people, and I just had the feeling that he must have carried some of that through, and it seems to be turning out that way. I listened to some of the speeches he had made today and he has an awareness of what it’s like to struggle to achieve something.”

She was looking forward to seeing President Obama take office, and not just for the thrill of 40 years-removed fame.

“I just think we’ve been through eight years of hell,” Toutonghi said, referring to the war in Iraq, mounting national debt and the country’s downward spiral into economic recession during President Bush’s administration.

She’s hoping the alert, inquisitive boy she once took care of now takes care of the country.

“I think he’s got a horrible job ahead of him, but he seems to be taking it in stride,” she said.

I'm kind of partial to July 24th - When I worked with the numbers on the pregnancy calculator at www.amazingpregnancy.com, it appears that Barack Obama would have been conceived on October 31 ;-)

Maybe this pic is not so far off the mark...

Law is a little complicated. You might have a marriage for some purposes but not for others; a marriage, illegal when contracted, might nevertheless be valid for purposes of making the children legitimate; for conveying to the wife marital property rights; or for making property community property; or for putting the wife in a position from which she could not contract the next marriage without committing bigamy. Depends on local law.

A few pages of posts before yours is a post describing the quirks of the Coast Provines's becoming part of the Republic of Kenya. IIRC, the courts there were not the standard English derived affairs, but were islamic in nature.

Views were divided as to whether the coastal strip should be treated as a single entity with Kenya Colony, or whether it should be handed back to the Sultan of Zanzibar or it be treated as an independent entity and declared Independent.

In a report submitted to the British Government and the Sultan of Zanzibar entitled ‘The Kenya Coastal Strip Ð Report by the Commissioner’ Mr. Robertson recommended that the coastal strip be incorporated into Kenya before self government and independence subject to certain safeguards being given to the coastal people which should be entrenched in the constitution.

... Robertson further recommended that the British Government abrogate the 1895 Agreement with the Sultan of Zanzibar and that another Agreement be made between the Government of Kenya and the Sultan of Zanzibar whereby the Sultan of Zanzibar will surrender his Sovereignty claims over the Coastal strip in consideration of the Kenya Government undertaking to respect and safeguarding inter alia the maintenance of the Sharia Law for Muslims and the retention of the Kadhi’s Courts...

On the 5th October 1963, the said Agreement was actually executed in the form of an exchange of letters between the Prime Ministers of Kenya and Zanzibar Messrs Jomo Kenyatta and M. Shamte respectively.

I think the pending litigation is good because it is helpful in continuing to develop the real facts and get them in the public stream.
Yes. I am looking forward to hearing people in the street beginning to discuss this. I will forward anecdotes as I encounter them.

Lots of people in the media know perfectly well that he was born in Kenya.

This is a very bold statement. Do you mean major news outlets (broadcast and print)? If they know perfectly well, what is their motive for keeping a lid on this?

Every member of the Supreme Court, every member of congress, every member of the Joint Chiefs, most members of the DOD, CIA, FBI, Secret Service and state run media, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, PBS, NPR, MSNBC, Fox and print news, knows that Barack Hussein Obama does NOT meet Article II – Section I constitutional requirements for the office he holds. By his own biography, there is NO way he can pass the test. The hard evidence is so far beyond overwhelming, it is ridiculous.

But not ONE member of America’s most powerful people will dare confront Obama and his anti-American cabal on the subject. The Constitution does NOT stand.

Half of the people you expect to stop this insanity are quiet co-conspirators in the silent coup. The other half is paralyzed by fear, motivated only by political self-preservation.

Americans keep asking what they can do because they see that none of their leaders are doing anything to stop the demise of their beloved country. It’s the right question, because those leaders are NOT going to stop this thing.

Thank you for making that image available. I noticed the material in the background that has been referred to many times as "a spread" looks very much to me like upholstery material. It is thick and looks like it has some wool content.

(I hope I didn't miss something about this in this long thread. Admit I skipped one section of a couple 100 to try to catch up to the current ones.)

The punk'd images on the Washington Independence site show this item to be a large "throw" with fringed edging that is designed to cover a sofa. To me the material looks the same in 2 of those photos and different from your image in the other two. Don't know if these observations have any value. One of the photos there shows this "throw" to be enormous and sort of cheap looking. I had something like it in a different pattern which I used to dog-proof a couch. Had a nasty feel to it - looked soft but wasn't.

I did read one post (just remember the source of the post was someone who makes intelligent and reliable entries) that said the original Orly image did not have this striped red material in the background at all. Is that wrong?

If Orly's original does indeed have the throw as the background, I wonder how many man hours it took the minions to find a match to it. It would be really difficult to create it in an image program, I know. I used to create several humorous images or more a day for a conservative news site that required putting various elements from numerous photos into one and making them look natural. I could not have done the background of the number 2 photo in the punk'd article and I was pretty good at filling in backgrounds so that everything blended and looked natural.

If anybody ever needs a caricature of their favorite dem, let me know - large collection on one of my hard drives.

Don’t count him out yet. The people have been ripening for demagoguery for decades and may have reached critical mass. The Dems are using Brownshirt/Alinsky techniques—first they prepared the battlefield by describing Tea Party and other opponents attending congressional constituent meetings as “mob,” then last night they sent out their ACORN/labor union brownshirts to instigate violence. The State Run Media instantly jumped on the meme: “Town Hall Meetings Turn Violent”; the shmoes in the middle who aren’t paying much attention instantly assume that the violence comes from anti-Obamaites, egged on by tinfoil-crazy Birthers etc.

Listen, the people running the Dem party have no intention of letting the democratic process bring them down. They know they can’t seize complete statist power by a Bolshevik type revolution (even the Bolsheviks did not seize power by straight-out revolution, but let a more moderate group overthrow the existing order, then they moved in and crushed the moderates on the leadership level), so they are doing what is possible in “democratic” system.

Yes, the tide of public opinion is turning but the public as a whole is so immature, so clueless about the truths of politics and economics, freedom and responsibility, that they can be demagogically manipulated. The stronger our resistance becomes, the more vociferously it will be labeled “violent” and “angry.” Their brownshirts will create the violence and we will be blamed for it. That violence then will create the justification, which the press will support, for draconian laws restricting our freedoms. The more we protest them, the more proof we deliver (in the twisted world that is MSM/chattering class mentality) that draconian suppression of freedom is necessary.

Don’t count these people out. Resistance has to be civil, smarter than they are, restrained but unyielding. The channels of communication are the key weapons in this fight. They will do their best to disarm us of ours. We must not deliver them the legitimation of that disarming.

That is NOT where I first heard of Toutonghi, but that is a very good article — one of the best on the topic. I found a Jerome Corsi article (posted a snippet of it up thread in blue font)that tells about Toutonghi’s relationship with Ann Dunham. The importance of all this, of course, is that it provides dates and a living witness as to Dunham’s whereabouts during those early years. Thank you so much for adding this article to the thread.
