Defeated Palin makes triumphant return home; GOP infighting grows

Gov. Sarah Palin returned home in defeat to Wasilla, Alaska, today - leaving behind eyebrow-raising tales about towel-clad appearances and internal campaign feuds. [...]

Among the stories reported by Fox News and Newsweek magazine:

-- She showed up in front of John McCain campaign aides "wearing nothing but a towel";

-- She sent campaign staff on a shopping spree for her family that insiders described as the "Wasilla hillbillies looting Nieman Marcus from coast-to-coast";

-- She was so shockingly ignorant of basic civics that aides prepping her for her single debate realized she didn't know that Africa is a continent and not a country, nor could she identify the countries that comprise North America. [...]

On election night, the New York Times reported, Palin showed up at McCain's election-night gathering in Phoenix ready to read a concession speech. It goes against campaign protocol for a vice presidential candidate to speak on election night, and the move was vetoed by McCain strategist Steve Schmidt. [...]

"She didn't know the nations involved in the North American Free Trade Agreement," NAFTA - a key agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada," he said GOP insiders told him. She also "didn't understand that Africa was a continent and not a country" and asked for explanation about the difference between South Africa and Africa, he reported. [...]

And the lingering matter of her wardrobe spending continues - a Republican party attorney has been assigned to look into Palin's designer clothing purchases and, reportedly, to retrieve the expensive items. [...]

"An angry aide ... said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books," according to the magazine.

Still, conservative leaders downplayed those reports, insisting that base voters were deeply impressed by Palin and her contributions to the ticket.

this is all crap and if Mitt is behind it, he will never get the nomination ever.....

Agreed. I slightly favored Romney after all the conservatives were forced out of the primaries.

But I have no intention of supporting him now, because we need a real conservative next time.

It's too early to be talking about people, anyhow.

We need to figure out what exactly we believe in, first.

Palin is really becoming a litmus test for the elitist “You’re-not-as-good-as-me-you-Flyover-country-hick” test.

It’s becoming really clear who suffers from that syndrome just by how they react to Governor Palin.

I’ve got advanced education with a high GPA and an IQ in the above 130 range, facts I normally and almost never would bring up, but I LOVE Palin. I don’t have any problem with who she is, what her background is, and in fact, I relate highly to her Western can-do attitude.

We need her and more like her to kick the butts of people who want to make real America irrelevant.

Go for it, Governor Palin! And God bless you!

I am making a list of those with “You’re-not-as-good-as-me-you-Flyover-country-hick” syndrome. We need to know who our enemies are.

Actually, Palin, who has approximately 1/1000th of McCain's aggregate campaign experience had much better message discipline than he did. Everybody in this campaign said things that made everybody cringe. Palin was no worse than anyone else. I don't think we saw enough of unedited (or unscripted) Palin to actually have much idea of her capabilities and limitations. Except that she could deliver oratorically; about that, there is no doubt.

By all accounts FDR was a lightweight. Harry Truman was no genius. But our Party allows the other side to get away with calling Reagan "an amiable dunce," and I think there are some on this thread who would agree with that assessment if they'd been politically active in the 1970's and 1980's.

It's part of the liberal narrative: We're dumb. They're smart. They're sophisticated urbanites. We're naive hillbillies. It's crap. It's time our side stopped aiding and abetting.

Some were allegedly named by David Frum. I didn't hear of anyone actually willing to testify on the record themselves.

I think you’re right. She was a big reason soft republicans bolted. Mac was suppose to play big in the suburbs but they thought she was a yahoo and voted against him. I thought originally her unfavorables were due to massive oversampling of democrats but from exit polling and the most accurate pollsters repeated that story. -------------------------------------------------------- You're exactly right. The lesson has been given to us for years now. But many Ostriches believe that it's more noble to continue to make the same mistakes rather than learn from them.

Perhaps you both could explain your own sociology in your comments.

Sarah caused soft republicans to bolt and thus the need to follow them? Yet then I hear those 'value' voters got turned off and stayed home after being Foloyized in 2006 and gave Congress to the democrats.

Now the blame is placed upon Ostriches because they cannot see the folly of their ways?

Why the double standard?

I think we want someone who understands "average people," but that doesn't mean we want an average person in office.

I'd say that the duly elected Governor of the largest State in the Union isn't your 'average person'. She understands 'average people', because she has a home, husband, and children, and is active in their lives, so she lives what most folks consider an 'average life'. This is what folks who supported her saw, and STILL see, and admire.

The Framers of the Constitution intended for our Legislators to be people who would take time out of their lives to come to Washington for a session or two of Congress. I don't believe they ever intended for only the people that others (or they themselves) consider 'elites' to occupy those offices, nor to make their stays as permanent as possible.

I think we want someone who understands "average people," but that doesn't mean we want an average person in office. So if this is all true, then I admit poor judgment, as I had been pushing for Gov. Palin for VP for a long time. And I think that perhaps she'd do well spending the next few years in prepping for the big time. As governor, though...she's an Executive, not a Legislator, IMO.

I think that's a reasonable opinion.

She is very well suited for her position as Gov. of Ak., and would have been a great POTUS understudy as VeeP. I don't buy the she needs to be qualified to be POTUS to be VeeP line. IMO, 43 wasn't ready, and I think some of his actions (and lack of action) and words have proved that to be true. Still, he was the best choice we had to choose from. I'm one who thinks she is smarter than 43, and would "grow into" the position very rapidly.

She does need polishing, and I'm sure she knows that and will do everything to polish herself and her image. I look for her to enter the National scene as first opportunity.

I really don't believe the stories, although I think there is some truth in their origins. But, so what? Look at Biden, crap, what an asshat, dumbass he is. One foot in mouth event after another.

I think she will be part of our future, and I will support her all the way.

I’ve been trying to pin down what’s bothering me here, and I think it goes something like this...

When Palin took the stage at the convention - BAM!
That right there was some talent!
McCain? Not so much

OK - you could chalk it up to luck - and we say all the time that great speechmakers are not necessarily competent (ala Obama).
Except - we DO know she is competent. We know this from her proven record.

The interviews were not good.
Of course - she was walking through mine fields and she knew it.
Heavy editing made it look worse than it really was.

For me - the debate sealed the deal.
She smoked Biden.
She exhibited confidence - competence - humor- and grace.
The camera loves her, and I did not cringe once.

When she takes the stage I am relaxed.
When McCain takes the stage I cringe.
McCain says strange things. His voice quivers.
When he is attacked, he does not counterattack.
He allows value ammunition to just drop to the floor.

Many time he could have brought out heavy artillery - and he left it hanging.

My opinion is that she is a natural talent - and everyone knows it.
Give her four years to get ready? Watch out!
And the jealous ones, and the snotty ones are trying to nip the “Sarah problem” in the bud.
They’ve seen the crowds. They’ve seen the response, and they saw the millions that poured into the coffers just because of HER.

This woman makes alot of people afraid.

I’ve been trying to do just that. I’ve been making a list of posters who post them, and will just avoid them.

I don’t, however, see this as Palin bashing post. It started off as a good, well reasoned, discussion.

Which means it's time to dump intellectual lightweights like Sarah Palin, and return this to the party of Bennett and Gingrich.

Why do you assume that Sarah is an intellectual lightweight? Might that be because that's ALL anyone heard on the news from the time she was chosen, from the MSM, Democrats, and, I'm sorry to say, some 'Republican' sources? She wasn't prepared for all this, and I think she held up pretty well, considering.

You may think it was a 'cult of personality', but she had solid conservative IDEAS in her speeches, not just pablum and platitudes like Obama.

As far as Bennett and Gingrich are concerned, yes, they are intellectuals, but most folks don't connect with them, because they don't think they're like their own families, and some folks LIKE that connection.

According to the statistics of voters, 20% of the folks who voted for Obama were supposedly CONSERVATIVE. I can only think they did so to 'teach the Republicans a lesson'. I guess, since it worked out SO well in 2006, they thought they'd try it again./s

Sarah wasn't a drag on the ticket; far from it.

I totally agree. I've got academic credentials I can put up against anyone. I could beat Sarah Palin at Trivial Pursuit any day, and probably scored 100 points higher than her on the SAT. But I know she would make a thousand times better President than I. Our family just adores her and can't wait to see her run again, but this time for the top job.

LOL!

“...and then she answered the door wearing nothing but a merkin and tassles...she’s definitely not presidential material...and I said, ‘Excuse me, ma’am, are you Mrs. Palin? I’ve come to prep you for your debate with Joe Biden,” and she said, ‘Why yes, but you mean this ain’t no social visit?’, and I began to get nervous because her husband, stud Todd, was lurking in a dark corner smoking a cigarette and looking straight at me, STRAIGHT AT ME, I TELL YA. Then she says to Todd, ‘First Dude, fix this sweet boy a drink!’ And Todd, he says to her, ‘Sure baby, whatever you want,’ and then he walks over to her and — I kid you not — he stubs out his cigarette right on her bare shoulder and she doesn’t bat an eyelash! I ran oughtta that hotel room faster than a jackrabbit, yassssiree, I did! And that’s the TRUTH!”

I love the media.

Does that mean that the CAMPAIGN STAFF was looting Neiman Marcus? From that statement, it sounded like Sarah didn't go, herself.

And I thought that the whole matter of the clothes HAD been cleared up. A campaign aide went out and bought clothes for Sarah and her family, without being ordered to by Sarah, but in order to supplement their wardrobes for the Campaign Trail. I thought it was a good idea, frankly.

Now, if it had been Hitlery in a towel, no one would be alive to tell the tale. They would have been turned to stone.

It’s amazing how quickly this story has morphed from bathrobe to towel. next week a drunken Palin will be running around Hotels jay bird naked.

She got Quayled, pure and simple. But since Mac was too weak to capitalize on anything (Fannie Freddie, Supported Bailout, Suspended Campaign, wouldn't use Ayers/Wright) he lost. Now his team, whom if we believe these reports, simply did not vet Palin, is going to frag her.

The lesson here is: lie down with RINOs, get Dems. Mac's just reaching across the aisle again. How's he supposed to face all his Senate buddies when they ask him why he lost? It was the hillbilly.

The first rule of the New Conservative Revolution is: No Sitting Senators, period. Second, closed primaries.

This is not an endorsement of Mitt.

“I thought it was a good idea, frankly.”

And God forbid the kids get any clothes!

And if she has too many kids she must be a hillbilly because the world exists now for only those 1 to 2 children families.
Beyond that - there must be a screw loose!

A woman is definitely behind these leaks.

How do I know?

Details about the different sizes that were bought - very catty.

The bathrobe/bathtowel detail.

The hillbilly comment.

This is either a jealous/catty woman - or a jealous/catty gay man.

These media strumpets exceed all decency.

SOmething has got to be done to counter these vicious, prevaricators. They are one of the major reasons we have a totally unqualified, un- “vetted” sinister, Marxist Islamophile in the White House.
