Defeated Palin makes triumphant return home; GOP infighting grows

Gov. Sarah Palin returned home in defeat to Wasilla, Alaska, today - leaving behind eyebrow-raising tales about towel-clad appearances and internal campaign feuds. [...]

Among the stories reported by Fox News and Newsweek magazine:

-- She showed up in front of John McCain campaign aides "wearing nothing but a towel";

-- She sent campaign staff on a shopping spree for her family that insiders described as the "Wasilla hillbillies looting Nieman Marcus from coast-to-coast";

-- She was so shockingly ignorant of basic civics that aides prepping her for her single debate realized she didn't know that Africa is a continent and not a country, nor could she identify the countries that comprise North America. [...]

On election night, the New York Times reported, Palin showed up at McCain's election-night gathering in Phoenix ready to read a concession speech. It goes against campaign protocol for a vice presidential candidate to speak on election night, and the move was vetoed by McCain strategist Steve Schmidt. [...]

"She didn't know the nations involved in the North American Free Trade Agreement," NAFTA - a key agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada," he said GOP insiders told him. She also "didn't understand that Africa was a continent and not a country" and asked for explanation about the difference between South Africa and Africa, he reported. [...]

And the lingering matter of her wardrobe spending continues - a Republican party attorney has been assigned to look into Palin's designer clothing purchases and, reportedly, to retrieve the expensive items. [...]

"An angry aide ... said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books," according to the magazine.

Still, conservative leaders downplayed those reports, insisting that base voters were deeply impressed by Palin and her contributions to the ticket.

The original quote I heard on that was that she was wearing a bathrobe.

Yes, and they showed up at her place, not this now her appearing to them. I doubt there were very many rooms where the Palins got to sleep. Not as if there was a 'study' for their indoctrination sessions.

As an American that happens to be black that offends me on several levels.

As an American who happens to be highly educated, this whole thing about Palin being a dope offends me on so many levels I can barely contain myself. People on this thread and in the Party need to get their heads out of their @sses and understand that Palin's image has been manipulated from Day One by people who absolutely hate our guts; and yet for some reason we're supposed to believe their portrayal of Palin is a faithful rendition.

NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE you see on television is anything like the persona they're trying to project. Politicians, like actors, manipulate the public perception of themselves for a living. They're professionals. People who have actually traveled with Palin, including a number of libs, say she is not a lightweight. I'm more inclined to believe a testimony against self-interest than I am these idiotic, finger-pointing rumors.

If Palin is planning for a run in 2011, she'll need to be on the stump for other Governors, Senators, and Congressmen in 2010, and she'll have to find people to build her network for the presidential run. Many of us will get to actually meet her at that point, and many others will hear from people they trust who have met her. Then we'll know the real Sarah Palin, and we'll know how she stacks up against Jindal, or Cantor, or Romney, or whoever else is running.

Maybe even Warrior Nurse will have a hat in the ring by then...

Romney and his people had NOTHING to do with rumors about Palin

Agreed she did that. But on the other hand, it's sticking our head in the sand if we just refuse to examine both positive and negative information that becomes available. Yes, this is a hit piece...but is there truth in it? I believe there very well could be some.

What you think these people never saw lord McCain in a bathrobe? I think there is a deliberate attempt to make her look common and more like white trash than to acknowledge the overwhelming positive she gave these sexist pigs.

I know these thngs are false. I’ve heard enough people who traveled with the campaign and gain nothing from defending her say it not true. It’s not true, but hey there are a couple haters here who eat anything negative about her up. So I guess I’m happy for them tonight.

“Which means it’s time to dump intellectual lightweights like Sarah Palin, and return this to the party of Bennett and Gingrich.”

The party of compulsive gambling and adultery?

I’m still w/ Palin.

I agree. I think she was set-up to fail with her first couple of interviews (I suspect that they tried to cram a bunch of do's and don't down her throat to the point that she wasn't comfortable speaking honestly.) I also got sick of her having to call McCain a "Maverick" all the time.

I'm of above-average intelligence and pretty well-read, and I can say that I have never felt that I was superior to her in any way. (And she has way more energy and grace than I do!) However, McCain said a few things in his debates that made me cringe...

Then let's wait for the audit, and a named source.

“At first, the story was that it was a bathrobe”

I thought I had heard that, but was beginning to wonder if I’d imagined it.

I made a similar comment this evening regarding a local "conservative" talk show host. He admits the press and others dislike conservatives and try to destroy them, but then believes there is truth to the rumors regarding Palin which he perpetuates by repeating them and doesn't like Palin because of them. It's beyond frustrating and outrageous.

I think you’re right. She was a big reason soft republicans bolted. Mac was suppose to play big in the suburbs but they thought she was a yahoo and voted against him. I thought originally her unfavorables were due to massive oversampling of democrats but from exit polling and the most accurate pollsters repeated that story.

You're exactly right.

The lesson has been given to us for years now.

But many Ostriches believe that it's more noble to continue to make the same mistakes rather than learn from them.

Speaking of which... Under the proven assumption that at least some defeated Republicans will do anything for money, no matter how humiliating, that would be quite a Superbowl commercial, n'est–ce pas?.

Yes, yes, but the article labeled the geographical questions as ‘civics’. One wonders about someone bandying accusations of ignorance while in the same sentence exhibiting their own.

Agreed!

And that comment by Mccain regarding the economy was used by many democrats against him. Talk about giving the oppostion ammunition to use against you, ugh.
Another big mistake by McCain, I think, was in talking about keeping home prices from falling and helping people who couldn’t pay their mortgage to stay in their home. Not the kind of stuff republicans feel the government should be involved in.

As for Sarah Palin supposedly not knowing about Africa being a continent, Obama did not even know Illinois was next door to Kentucky. In his own words he said Kentucky was going for HIllary about its closeness to Arkansas, lol. Yeah, but the media didn’t make anything of that gaffe.

The MSM will continue smearing Palin because they see her as a threat.

Marinucci has been engaging in a journalistic assault on a near-daily basis against Palin, all the while giving Biden and Zer0 a free pass.

Joe Garafoli of SFGate has been her partner in crime.

If Palin was such a firebrand, then how do you explain the fall in GOP turnout this time around?

How about because we ended up with a Senator who would probably have a (D), or least an (I), after his name now if “Jumping Jim Jeffords” had not beat him to it in 2001...
