Defeated Palin makes triumphant return home; GOP infighting grows

Gov. Sarah Palin returned home in defeat to Wasilla, Alaska, today - leaving behind eyebrow-raising tales about towel-clad appearances and internal campaign feuds. [...]

Among the stories reported by Fox News and Newsweek magazine:

-- She showed up in front of John McCain campaign aides "wearing nothing but a towel";

-- She sent campaign staff on a shopping spree for her family that insiders described as the "Wasilla hillbillies looting Nieman Marcus from coast-to-coast";

-- She was so shockingly ignorant of basic civics that aides prepping her for her single debate realized she didn't know that Africa is a continent and not a country, nor could she identify the countries that comprise North America. [...]

On election night, the New York Times reported, Palin showed up at McCain's election-night gathering in Phoenix ready to read a concession speech. It goes against campaign protocol for a vice presidential candidate to speak on election night, and the move was vetoed by McCain strategist Steve Schmidt. [...]

"She didn't know the nations involved in the North American Free Trade Agreement," NAFTA - a key agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada," he said GOP insiders told him. She also "didn't understand that Africa was a continent and not a country" and asked for explanation about the difference between South Africa and Africa, he reported. [...]

And the lingering matter of her wardrobe spending continues - a Republican party attorney has been assigned to look into Palin's designer clothing purchases and, reportedly, to retrieve the expensive items. [...]

"An angry aide ... said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books," according to the magazine.

Still, conservative leaders downplayed those reports, insisting that base voters were deeply impressed by Palin and her contributions to the ticket.

The McLame Campaign should leave her alone. If it were not for Gov Palin McCain would probably won only 2 state and it would have been a lot worse b/c conservative came out for her and were galvanized by her conservative views and standing on the issues. I hope to see her and Bobby Jindal in 2012. It will be a mess over the next 4 years. How long before someone that criticize the new president and be labeled racists. As an American that happens to be black that offends me on several levels.

It never fails to amaze me how many people here want to believe this and want it to be the end of her.

Who is the biggest threat to the libeal dems? Sarah Palin.

It is not just the liberal Dems she threatens, but the RINOs as well. Why do you think they are so quick to slander and try to present her as a bimbo? To shut down an attempt for the nomination in 2012.

She scares the MSM, too.

Keep track of the ones doing the slandering, the ones who broke the Reagan rule, and make sure that lot has to get their checks from the side they are on.

The country club RINOs are also trying to brand her as some 'hick from the sticks' because she scares the heck out of them and represents a power shift in the party--back to the Conservative base. You can see who voted Republican--rural areas, and largely because of Sarah.

I am just one of many who voted Republican because of Sarah Palin and not because of McCain who was number six of the seven primary contenders in my book.

Who drew the crowds? Who is the biggest threat to the libeal dems? Sarah Palin.

But did she also place an upper limit on votes...that is, did she scare away some voters, too? Maybe Sen. John McCain would have gotten only a few votes on his own, but regardless, he lost. If Gov. Palin adds 30% of voters, that might seem good...but it's actually irrelevant if she simultaneously keeps away 60% of voters (I know of a handful of people who didn't vote for McCain because of Sarah Palin.)

I'm not saying that's the case, but it's something we must consider.

DO NOT INVEST IN PEOPLE, invest in ideas.

Exactly.

The Bushbots should have been a lesson.

when you are governor of a state, come and make your piece..

when you oversee a natural gas pipeline, speak as much as you wish...

and when you are picked to be a vp candidate, run 2-3 rallies a day, face reporters, try to keep the family happy, then please, again, speak your piece....

this is the only truth......mccain pulls in 10,000,000 less votes without Palin, maybe more....

I admit I thought the same.

But I am fascinated by the sociology of this.

The same folks who would be scandalized by such behavior if it were a Dem, or a neighbor, are enthralled that "she's just normal folk" and behaves so casually--and decorum is irrelevant.

Truer words were never spoken! This is a twofer for Obama. Smear Palin and claim Mitt is behind the smears. They can eliminate two threats for 2012 with one stone.

So McCain hired Bama/Alinsky aides for his own? Remember these people are claiming they saw her appearing to them wrapped only in a towel? This one keeps changing in who was doing the appearing and what was and was not worn. I do not think Bama/Alinsky but McCain/Alinsky aides are doing the smearing.

I agree - and stated earlier that the campaign workers leaking these lies should be sued for breach of contract, breaking confidentiality agreements.

Short of that, I won't support any candidate who employs anyone proven to be attacking Governor Palin during this time.

Until any of this is actually sourced by people willing to step forward and take responsibility for these claims, I'm going to have to say that anyone who believes them is jumping to conclusions.

Sorry, but I'm not gullible enough to accept any of this. Palin was set-up nicely by the Democrats and by a number of Quisling RINOs during the campaign. Understanding this, and understanding that she is now positioned to be a party leader -- especially if she campaigns for local Republicans in House and Senate races in 2010 -- the long knives are out.

Since no one has the courage to make these claims in broad daylight, it's fair to assume the people most likely to be making these statements are those with the most to lose from an ascendant Palin: either Romney or Huckabee supporters. Huckabee is unlikely because he didn't have access to the high-power consultants and beltway insiders in the same numbers or for nearly the same length of time as Romney. Furthermore, many of the "conservative" journos trashing Palin during the campaign were Romney supporters.

The rumor that Romney's people are behind these deprecations is out there. Those rumors are at least as credible as the rumors about Palin. I note that Palin has denied these reports for her part. Where is Mitt Romney? He is also a party leader with a prospective shot in 2012, and if he isn't culpable, it is long past time for him to step forward and denounce this backstabbing for the sake of the Party if no other reason. If he doesn't, I'll be inclined to find these reports as baseless, and Mr. Romney as a snake.

And whoever is sniping at Sarah is so ignorant that they don’t know that what’s a country or a continent, and the list of countries in North America is a matter of geography not of civics.

Wait until 2011 and it'll be a G-string and two pasties, and she chatted them up as she slid around the pole.

Can I add to your post, my current fave 'Bidenism'...

'Three letters...j-o-b-s.' Sigh.

I think Romney is...one of his peeps was high up (as a 'help') in the McCain staff.

Romney and company can kiss my grits.

I’m taking notes, making lists and drawing conclusions on just who is badmouthing Palin on garbage like this. One can honestly disagree with points and concepts, but to practice this class of character assassination is slime.

At first, the story was that it was a bathrobe (which makes sense if you’re on the campaign trail and your running mates campaign advisers need to come in).

And now it’s a towel.

It’s called sensationalism.
